Website causing problems for IE users [Read Only] - Cliff Pope
I've given up with Internet Explorer freezing and gone over to Firefox. Now I get mutiple windows opening with the Vodaphone Mobile phone add. I've just killed about 20, but more are popping up as I type.
Something for the webmasters to look at?

Which Vodaphone ad? I also use FireFox - but no pop-ups yet:)

It's a bit variable. I'm on Firefox and I get an occasional pop-under ad. Sneaky.

Firefox 3.5.3 here.

For a couple of weeks I've had another window opening under the active one with a "spotonoffers" URL. It's a blank page (assume the ads are blocked anyway). I fiddled with the adblock setings to get rid and it seems to have gone now.

I tried using IE8 instead but it stops responding altogether.

I understand the funding model and don't mind ads as long as they don't interfere or cause too much of a speed issue (s-l-o-w broadband - about 500kbps). When they do it's counterproductive for HJ and the advertisers, because the only way I can deal with it is to block them all, meaning I miss those I might find informative.

This is feedback, not a whinge.

Can't use IE8 at all with this site any more. Randomly freezes and has to be killed off through Task Manager, that's if it doesn't error and quit first. Tried four IE8 installs at work on our showroom network, and all have the same result, as does IE8 on all three PCs at home. No issues with IE8 on any other site I visit that I know of.

Safari 4.0.3 (for Windows) is OK

Chrome 2.0.172.43 is OK but painfully slow at times.

The HJ forum has been crashing my IE8 since last Thursday and still is. If I use an advert free web address for the forum it works correctly, (dont ask, it only works with my IP address). It has been proved that an advert is causing the problem with IE8 and it will probably get fixed after the weekend. I agree with pda (Pat) in another thread, I should not have to change my setup to use one website.

how about us poor sods who don't know how to change things around...and rely on friends/family to set the thing up in the first place

Im a self taught, trial and error computer user too, thats why I dont intend to change my setup. I work to - "If it aint broke dont break it".

yes, that's a very fair point....what continues to amaze me though is how many people out there know even less than i do...and I genuinely thought I was clueless

ahhh so it wasn't just my PC then!

I couldn't load the 'Discussion' forum this morning on IE7, so upgraded to IE8 and still no change.
however, using my linux machine with Firefox it seems ok, but I agree, the website should work with the majority of browsers and i shouldn't have to change Operating system and/or browser just to use a website.....
There Are Still Problems with Internet Explorer - Galaxy
There are still problems accessing this website with Internet Explorer. The site just hangs and you can't do anything except close IE down to come out.

Using Mozilla Firefox now which works perfectly.

Haven't experienced the hanging problem with other websites when using IE. I know there are other posts in "Discussion" relating to this problem (all now locked), the last one saying that the problem has been fixed.

I'm very sorry to have to say that it hasn't.

HJ please investigate. There's something about this website that Internet Explorer doesn't like.

Practically all of the sites I access via my Favourites lists open almost immediately, but not this one, the most useful. Sometimes I cannot access it at all, sometimes I can, but then it locks up when I try to navigate round it. Re-entering the address sometimes works, as this time, but not always. The problem has got far worse recently and, if it locks up, I can't use any other part of the web or my email and have to shut down the service. What is it that is so different about this site, and what can I do about it please?

There is *Still* a problem with this site and IE, making it unusable by 83% of the PC population.

This site is flakier than "only the crumbliest, flakiest" etc

Indeed there is still a problem and they are aware. They are looking into it.

Not that I can do anything as a moderator, but apologies for the inconvenience.

The site works really fast on a Mac running MacOS X 10.6 in Safari though. No consolation but it does mean the problem is very much a problem with Windows and Internet Explorer. Maybe last week's patch Tuesday did something that broke IE?

i think its IE in specific, at work i have no choice to use IE 6 (for internet explorer) but i installed Firefox, and it works fine.
however IE 6 (the work system prevents me from downloading 7+) it just freezes.

So the backroom only admits people who are sufficiently clued up use a few mouse-clicks to install a better browser?

Sounds good to me.
