1995 Renault Clio 1 petrol - 1171cc ("Energy" engine)
Old Clio usually runs well, but has had a long term habit of not starting. When this happens, the engine turns over (fast ? as if little compression) but makes no attempt to start or even splutter or cough. The engine then will normally light up when all switched off and retried, and runs smoothly as if nothing has happened.
This all used to happen only about once a year ? maybe as I recall in hot weather. However recently this has happened much more frequently, and would not start for several days. This forced me to do some elementary diagnostics today, with a happy result at least of getting it lit up again, albeit no root cause yet!
When it will not start, there is spark @ plugs, but no smell of fuel. I have re-seated all of the fuel injection electrical connectors I can find, including what I think are the fuel pump relays in a box between the battery and the nearside strut top, all to no avail.
Today I managed to start it by dribbling some petrol into the air intake, having removed the air cleaner. The engine then ran well & restarted repeatedly without problem.
However (for reason now unknown to me!) I then decided to unplug the fuel pump whilst the engine was running (I can access via a hatch below rear seat). The engine faltered & stalled and would not restart after the pump was re-connected, until I fed fuel into the air intake again as above.
Can anyone please assist me with a likely root cause or the (simple please) diagnostics I can do to pin this down properly?
Many thanks for reading and for any assistance.

Fingers crossed again.
I have now removed & discarded the historic Cobra immobiliser, and reconnected ignition wires behind steering column ignition switch using cable connectors. All seems well, at least so far so good.
Bizzarrely - it seems likely that I had 2 faults causing similar symptoms, ie flaky immobiliser as well as crank sensor.
The rear hub bearings have been replaced twice in 4 years and it sounds like a new set are needed again. Does anyone have experience in this area and can suggest possible causes for excessive wear please? Read more

Brinneling of bearings can occur due to poor practices during fitting bearings and through poor practices during removal of brake disc.
The Brinnel test is (www.gordonengland.co.uk/hardness/brinell.htm ) comparable to what can happen to a wheel bearing that is abused during fitting (over loading, impacted, missaligned etc) and will shorten the life of a bearing. Brinnelled bearings will have indentations in the bearing surfaces where the ballbearings have been forced into the surface.
Rental a car from Dollar via Carhire3000 and joined Dollars 'Express Dollar' Club at no charge. Arrived MCO Orlando and about 100 people in the queue. Walked past them to the Express lane and No queue and I was out of there in less that 2 minutes with a free upgrade to a Chysler 300. Alamo queue was agout 80 people and my Son who hired with them had to wait 1 hr 20 minutes. Hope this helps someone out. Regards Peter Read more
I'd think if you had a flat tyre they won't mind. It's more to do with where you take the car, e.g. on tracks not suitable for normal cars.

It appears 3+ltr cars do not sell unless they have German origins - How will Infiniti make a mark when Honda could not despite the Legend being well specified and well built! Read more
Completely agree Mike. This country and France (poss Germany now too) is obsessed with Diesel. I have owned two and hated every minute. Thank goodness manufacturers are making decent progress producing large petrol engines with reasonably low CO2. All this CO2 judged tax is a nonsense in any case. I'll stop now as I can feel a political rant brewing in my mind....!!
Hello,
so i got my focus eventually and its all lovely apart from a few niggles. When i was cleaning it i noticed that the passenger side wheel had a lot more brake dust on it than the drivers side and this morining i could hear it sticking...it doesnt do it all the time and when i brake it brakes in a straight line...and iv not really noticed any drop in mpg or acceleration...any ideas??
Thanks

Most of these fast fit places offer a free brake check ask them to have a look at it.
I had occasion to go to Oxford yesterday and on way back I was tootling along at 70 when a Ford 375 Consul passed me - now that was a shock as my old Zodiac never felt safe at that speed - it was the grubbiest one I have ever seen - painted matt black with painted on cat paw marks- the rear number plate was missing so not sure of year - anyway I had to pass it just for pride sake - then further on I passed a car towing a hot rod not in too good condition either - then getting close to Warwick turn I passed a nice looking pink 50's Buick - very low to ground (my type of car) - so anyone any idea what event these cars might have been to? -obviously Oxford or further south. Is that the before or after ?
Just recently my car has developed a bearing noise -- it's a kind of grinding/whizzing noise that increases in pitch with engine revs, and which disappears after a period of a couple of miles or about 5 minutes at idle.
When it has quietened down at idle it will come back for a while if the steering is turned, so I suspect that the PAS pump is at fault.
Few questions:
1) Are these parts *really* nearly £400 on a Nissan? ISTR replacing the pump on an old Cavalier and getting change from £100 new....
2) Is it a complete pump replacement or is it possible to replace/refurb the bearings at lower cost?
3) How long would the pump be expected to last in its current condition? The car is around two weeks from the point where I can obtain a 13-month MOT. I'd rather not splash out on the car if it is possibly going to fail, but I do a few hundred miles a week so if it is likely to fail completely I'd rather make alternative arrangements now.
Thanks for any insights. Read more
Ever noticed how many cars there are for sale parked at the side of the road?
Usually at the bangernomics end of the scale, small hatchback jobs. Saw a couple while walking round to the shops and guess what? Not one on the motor insurance database.
Assuming that a prospective punter would want to take a test drive, it's quite scary really. Read more
S'funny ... Out of all the cars I've bought, I've never got one from a 'road side trader', but my neighbour where I lived b4 sold her nice V 940 est. by parking it on a grass verge with price & Ph. No. on the windscreen - and she is as straight as a Roman Rd.,
Just because a geezer has a collar & tie and sits behind a teak veneer desk with pictures of nice models (cars!) on the wall, doesn't mean he's honest Charlie.

1. Put some Petrol in the tank
2. Check the fuel pumps working
3. check the fuel filter not blocked
