Surely they will face criminal charges over that, as it amounts to fraud? In addition to attempting to pervert the course of justice after trying to instigate legal proceedings against piquet?

Why don't we just take motorists off the roads all together...?
Am I still on a motoring forum ?

SWMBO's Beetle seats are looking rather frayed although the strength and support of the seat cushions are still there.

Can't afford to go down the full leather route but has anyone any experience of buying aftermarket seat covers to go over existing seats and for them to look and fit well?

I doubt that such a thing exists as one size doesn't fit all but from a financial point of view I would love to be proved wrong!! Not looking for leather, or wild colours with go faster logos on them, just something subtle to almost match the rest of interior.

And I realise I would need to get side airbag compatible ones! Read more

I have just acquired a Vauxhall Astra Merit 1700 TD which has done 190000 miles. I am wanting to try using vegetable oil has anyone tried running a Vauxhall on it. Can anyone give me some tips. Waiting your replies. Read more

Unless you have an inside source, new rape oil will cost more than Derv. Filtered waste cooking oil may be free/near free in your area, and may work in some cars. Go to vegetableoildiesel.co.uk to check.

I've a 02 C5 2.0ltr Diesel Estate. I've read the manual and the button at the end of the stalk used for wipers, according to the manual, cycles the functions of the comptuter (average speed, overspeed, average mpg, instant mpg etc), for a few months it was temperature, then it shifted to average mpg, a few weeks later it was instant mpg then it stuck on OVERSPEED OFF for weeks which would not go away. Pressing the button to cycle these functions does nothing, i've taken it off the stalk, there's nothing wrong with it. I've reset the machine by disconnecting the battery so it just reads time, date, cd track and temperature but how can I get this fixed so the computer does what it's told to when I press the button.

I'm assuming that something every few weeks (poss a knock on the sterring column) is hitting some switch internally that's supposed to be linked to the button but it's just not working the way it's supposed to.

Please help, it took me weeks to read the instructions (not weeks to actually read it, weeks to admit I need to, i'm a guy, we don't need instruction manuals, most of the time). Read more

It's a long time since I did this but you start off by prising the 'button' out of the end of the stalk using something small like a jewellers screwdriver.

If my car has only done about 2k - 3.5k miles after 1 year should the oil be changed or can I leave it for say an extra 3 months? I would normally change at around 9 months if I'm doing an average mileage. I do short trips (not in stop start traffic) and every few months do a 500 mile return trip. It's a mk1 focus tdci.

Another question I have is, is it legal to have different sized tyres on separate axles? Someone I know put 225 (width) at the back and 175 at the rear. Read more

Performance Mercs come with wider rear wheel & tyres as standard and have been spec'd, tested and certified (e.g. Merc. AMG wheel/tyres spec is : front: 7.5J x 18 (225 / 40 tyres), rear: 8.5J x 18 (245 / 35 tyres)).

Whereas the above mentioned Astra isn't spec'd, tested and certified to comply with such criteria.

If you get pulled over for a randmom safety inspection can the police start dismanteling wheel hubs etc or can they only do what an MOT inspector can do?

Surely if they do dismantle things that leaves them open to a lot of legal problems?

I can't imagine they would find anything wrong with my car unless it is something which has recently failed like a brake light. Read more

Another thread reminded me we haven't heard about future plans for the backdated/retrospective increased VED for high co2 group cars...those regd between 2001 and 2006.

I don't want to start another rights and wrongs row, but it's gone quiet about this recently.

Does anyone know if the years in question were permanently shelved for retrospective huge increases or was it just another temprary U turn from a panicking discredited government (term 'govt' used loosely) and still yet to be reinstated after the next election.

To ensure fair swiping at politicians, i haven't heard the other lot say too much about this either, and i wouldn't rust any one of 'em to tell me the time. Read more

Thanks for the earlier link L'es..., if i read correctly those shelved huge rises for the highest band cars regd 'tween 01 and 06 resume in 2010...unless i'm wrong again.

It's the not knowing for sure that gets to me, can't make a judgement about buying without sure figures to work to.

I can budget for the VED meself, whats galling is that you must also budget for massive terminal depreciation as the VED costs become an increasing percentage of the remaining value of the car.

As an aside at various docks where we take British made cars for export there are a considerable number of UK regd cars waiting to be exported.
A probable likely future for many sound quality cars that would otherwise be worthless here. Much better than seeing those cars destroyed.

Would any of the Police traffic drivers we chat with (and occaisionally harrass), care to tell us what work cars they drive, (realise you may only want to talk about the marked ones). Do you prefer front or rear wheel drive, what is more useful, speed or acceleration, which ones handle a load best, or inspire confidence at speed, petrol or diesel, even which ones are still comfortable at the end of a shift? I can remember my Dad (Met Pol) telling me a tale when I was a mere slip, of being on traffic duty, waving arms type, and at one point realising a car had stopped behind him and he hadn't heard it. IIRC that was a Daimler and he said that there was the Driver and a guy in the rear with a stethoscope listening for creaks and groans etc. He spoke to the guys who said that they were on a factory test. Believe it or believe it not. That's how I remember it.
