What could I use to further protect a rusty exhaust (from CAT back) from the elements. It is mainly surface rust and not advanced corrosion. AFAIK it is the original (11 years old). I do remember "madf" having a 15 year old original exhaust and he did do something which withstood the heat. Read more

if you use it you dry the water off it
it then follows that rust is abatted
was looking at an old waggon the other day, been stood for 20 + years,i was pulling bits off the chassis off it like it was a crawfords cream cracker

When driving along at 70-80mph I occasionally get a sudden dip in performance and a very slight vibration from the engine, almost like a piston is off or something. This only lasts for say 5 seconds then it's fine again for another 10-15 mins. Also when pulling away from standstill the accelleration in 1st is shocking sometimes and very 'lumpy'. Strangely all other speeds and gears seem to be fine.... it either happens at 0pmh or 80mph.. nothing in between! I've just had it in for a service recently which made no difference and used some Redex injector cleaner... which also made no difference. I'm thinking one of the injectors might need replacing instead ?
The car's got a full service history but it does have 126,000 miles on the clock so I'm kinda expecting little niggles these days. Any help/opinions greatly appreciated. Read more

Perhaps it's worth getting the fault codes read.

I think on your model it can be done by shorting a couple of pins on the socket thingy for code readers and counting flashing warning lights!

Something for the electrically minded.....
My wife was following me yesterday and noticed that my rear off side indicator glowed when braking. On further inspection today, I can see that that all three off side indicator bulbs glow constantly when the brakes are applied, as does the off side tail light. They take a couple of seconds to build up but are still well under half full brightness.
I suspected a problem around the rear offside cluster but the plate that holds the bulbs looks clean and undamaged. If I remove the brake light bulb, none of the other bulbs glow when they shouldn't.
I had a problem about a year ago when the bulb in the fog light switch illuminated when it shouldn't. Braking or indicating right caused the switch light to either come on constantly or flash in time with the indicators respectively. I investigated with a multimeter and found a wire at the switch coming live and causing the said effects. I fitted a diode which resolved the symptoms, though it was doing just that and not tackling the cause.
I've just taken the diode out, it's caused the fog light switch issue to come back as it was before but hasn't affected the problem noticed yesterday.
I suppose that the brake light circuit illuminating is somehow providing an earth path for the other bulbs. This has the hallmarks of something I could spend many hours on but which has a simple cause, if anyone knows what it is.
Any suggestions would be very gratefully received. Read more

fiestas dont do this unless someones been playing as the connecters work well
i was saying the last time i had a feedback through the wiring that the bulb had gone open circuit but not fully so under reasonable loads performed perfectly
you will note that a fiesta on this year has a proper earth via an 8mm bolt

My ex co car (automatic) has done 106,000 miles without major fault. It has been serviced at local Honda dealer since new. For past 6 months I have noticed a tapping noise from engine when accelerating especially after 2,000 rpm. It is very pronounced on cold start but can still be heard after long motor way runs. My wife says it sounds like I'm running some great big sewing machine!

Could it be the fuel - I have made several trips to France recently and have filled up with 95 E10 grade petrol. Most petrol stations now have only this grade and rumour has it that this new stuff can cause problems with old cars. Read more

Most Hondas have tappets that need to be adjusted in the old-fashioned way. When was the car last serviced?

When do EGR valves open and close exactly ?

ie when is the exhaust gas allowed to recirculate through the engine and when does the valve close to allow turbo boost ?

I understoood that the EGR valve was open at idle or on the overun, is this correct ? Read more

IanW3

The EGR valve opens during light and moderate throttle cruising, to drop the combustion temperature. It is closed at idle to ensure closest control of mixture, and closed at full throttle to give maximum power. Since there is no fuel being injected on the over-run, it doesn't matter whether the valve is open or closed, but I imagine it would be closed.

A separate valve is used to control turbo boost - the wastegate.

I wish car manufacturers would offer the option of lower gearing so that I could have better acceleration from my car's puny 2 litre engine but with a top speed of, say, only 80 mph. Read more

hi, hope you all can help.
Bought a 306 lx 1.9 diesel yesterday( friday 10th July)
it started and stopped as it should on the key several times through out the day, came to it this morning Saturday and it only turns over and will not start, i think it is the immobilser circuit, is there a way to remove it from the start system and check the engine starts, or even remove it completely out of the system.

Thanks in advance

its not the immobiliser young wolfie
can you here a relay click off after having the ignition lights on after about 10 seconds
if you can try cranking the car then
the car was probably warm when you bought it and so hiding the underlying poor start from cold issue

hi all, my 98/s clk 320 needs a new starter, but th job looks very tricky. Apparently its not a straightforward swap, and a 4 hr job according to my mechanic, as engine bits need to be moved out of the way. Can anyone shed some light on this job?

cheers
