Could anyone please help.
For years i have been with the same insurance company and every year they have renewed my policy without fail.
Last year i changed companys .
today i was driving my son to work and was stopped by the police and was told that my insurance had run out at midnight,(less than 6 hours ) i told them that i thought my policy had been automaticly renewd at midnight any way the police told me if i renewed the policy at the road side then they would not take my car away but i would be getting 6 points and a fine . i renewed my insurance and had to tell them about the points which added another £400 on to my insurance, i have been driving for years and never once had any dealing with the police i think it was a little excessive as it was a honest mistake (the insurance company deny any liability.
Is there anything i can do to take the matter further , could i challenge this in a court would they understand or would i get more. what can i do

Please can someone confirm, on a 1998 single vanos 2.5 engine (petrol) of the 2 cables connected underneath the throttle body which is the cruise control and which is the accelerator? I have an issue with my throttle being like and on/off switch. Currently the accelerator is going to the top with cruise control directly below. Read more
its cables not fly by wire.
A friend of mine with an old CX (too old for HJ's list!) is trying to keep the tinworm at bay and has plentiful supplies of waxoyl, but always complains that the supplied sprayer doesn't squirt hard enough to get it any distance into box sections, or atomise enough to get good coverage. I think he's tried thinning it with white spirit (I suggested heating it up, too) but he would really like something that applies a bit of pressure.
Any ideas? I'm sure someone here will have adapted a tyre inflator or something... :-)

Isn't the original Waxoyl sprayhead a tube with a nail blocking the end and four holes punched in it?I remember seeing a test of this and it missed patches of metal whilst dousing other areas in too much. How about a pump up sprayer? These are quite cheap now and could be stood in a container of hot water.

jc2, this wasn't just once but several times over, I believe from reports, some five miles. It also included rude gestures from both the passenger and the driver.
I wonder what would have happened if she had had an accident caused by her shenanigans and needed help - would she have screamed about her 'uman rites to get fast response?
In January this year I bought an approved used Mazda MPV 2.0TD through a Mazda dealer for £5000 which came with a years Mazda Zoom Zoom Plus (ZZ+) warranty.
When I bought the car she had covered just over 52000 miles. In order to qualify as a used approved Mazda it had to have Full Service History and pass a rigorous inspection. This was a blue chip car.
I soon noticed that it was using a little oil necessitating topping up weekly and this has steadily got worse to the point that having covered just over 5000 miles (bringing the total mileage to just over 57000) it has consumed just under 7 litres of oil, or to put it another way about 1 litre every 750 miles.
I checked the handbook which stated that these engines (Apparently the same as the Mazda6) can consume up to 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles.
The odd thing is, it is not obviously burning oil (no plumes of blue smoke), it is not leaking oil, the performance is strong and the engine runs very smoothly. The fuel economy is good and the coolant level is static and the engine temperature never deviates once warm. Other than the appetite for oil, you really wouldn?t know there was a thing was wrong with the engine.
Took it into my local Mazda garage, and they quickly diagnosed heavy breathing!? In fact, with the engine running, if you remove the oil filler cap it does a (depressingly) good impression of a steam train. It also does the same if the dip stick is removed indicating it is likely to be blow past the pistons as opposed to valve guides. How it doesn?t burn oil I really don?t know. The technician immediately started to talk about a new short engine and I thought ?Fine, crack on?!
I immediately sensed all was not well though as they went on to explain to me that I would have to pay for the engine to be taken out and stripped at a cost of at least £600!!!!! Furthermore, if it was deemed to be ?fair wear and tear? the warranty would not pay for the repair and I would be liable. The warranty help desk have said that if there is a qualifying problem then the diagnostic costs would be fully covered.
So I am now stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have a first class warranty but may still be liable for the repairs!
In a worse case scenario, how do I argue the toss?
To my mind, I have a car which I bought 5 months ago as an used approved car which had a Full Mazda Service History and was good enough to qualify for the ZZ+ approved used scheme; so has clearly been maintained to the manufacturers specifications and was thoroughly checked before sale.
It is a low mileage car and today the life expectancy of an engine must be well over 100,000 miles and probably nearer 150,000 miles, but how do I prove that?
Surely, a properly maintained modern engine should not be using anything like 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles let alone every 750 miles having only done 57,000 miles?
Any advice would be appreciated.

...but there are still some people in the world who would perhaps feel uncomfortable selling on a car with a known but undeclared major fault. At least I hope so.
I suspect that the replacement stop solenoid I recently fitted is faulty. The car has not started since it was fitted. No fuel reaches the injectors, and I know fuel is reaching the injector pump (Bosch).
I have removed the solenoid, and gripped the body in the jaws of a connected -ve jump lead, and when applying +ve to the head there is no noise. Fair to assume it's not working? Read more
The Bosch EP-VE pumps have a manual shutoff lever fitted for PSA applications. You can stop any car diesel at idle by placing the palm of your hand over the air intake - assuming the configuration of the intake scoop allows this - otherwise you may have to separate the air trunking somewhere.
If you are testing a loose solenoid, apart from a resistance check you will need to fit the plunger for it to make any sound at all when powered up. Bosch solenoids are usually reliable. (Lucas ones leak fuel, then fail open circuit).

I have a St170 and had a custom CAT fitted about a year ago. After 2 weeks engine warning light appeared so went back to garage to have it diagnosed and reset. This went on for 6 months until both myself and the garage came close to murdering each other.
I have since had it checked at 2 other garages. Both get the same P0420 - Bank 1,Sensor 1 efficiency below threshold code and say it is either the sensor, which has already been replaced, or the CAT.
After all the money I have paid out already, I am very reluctant to go get another CAT or sensor. Is there any other explanations for this or am I going to have to bite the bullet and shell out for another CAT and/or sensor?

It's worth trying your local scrap dealer to see if they may have a suitable cat for your car. Unfortately performance cars do tend to carry an additional premium cost when something goes wrong, which is the reason I now keep away from them, I got stung once when I was younger, never again.
I have stopped getting traffic anouncements on FM on my car radio with the service switched on. Formerly, there were frequent sound drop-outs even when there were no announcements and this is still the case (unless I switch the service off). Can anyone suggest why this trrouble has suddenly appeared please? Read more
Personally I find the traffic announcements from Wave105 invaluable for my daily commute up and down the M3 and M27, far more useful than those big new expensive overhead signs .
