Just had the cambelt changed. The garage owner told me he had to advanced the pump timing because the engine kept cutting out. The engine was running fine before. I am wondering if he put the belt on wrong and compensated by adjusting the pump timing. I hope I'm wrong but the engine sounds a bit harsher although I could be imagining that as I'm listening out for problems. Read more

All retailers price their goods according to a number of factors. The nub of the matter is that they have to make an overall profit, and to do this they might have to charge more for a particular item than other retailers.
Hi folks,
I have read many reports on Toyota engines sludging their oil and self destructing, mainly from the US where Toyota are involved in a class action with thousands of owners.
There may also be an issue with dual mass flywheels on the diesels.
I am thinking of buying a Toyota Avensis for its safety record but am concerned about the above.
Anyone have any information on this which applies in UK? Seems to be kept quiet over here.

Hi, my Toyota, less than 70K miles. Oil ring bunged up. Oil goes through top two rings/ burns out the exhaust/ runs out of oil, gauges appear in the bores. Toyota service said warranty on this failure extended to 7 years or 120K miles, but guess what? My Toyota registered 2nd June 2002. Loads of Toyotas have apparantly been done, but because mine is just over 7 years, not covered. Cost- new half engine plus labour- more than 2.5K pounds. I feel hard done by- only 70K miles is way below expected life. Engine now estimated to consume around 1 litre per 1000 miles- (garage estimate) even with gently driving. Is this fair (Toyota have been good extending warranty), or is this just Toyota ducking the cost of a general recall? Car serviced at Toyota all its life, so why didn't they de-gunged the oil ring to keep it clear? No, they just sat back and let it happen. What do the experts think? Anyone get a result from Toyota? If so how?
Hi,
yesterday, the Auto Diagnosis light came on and with it the car has gone into limp mode.
It went off for a while, then came on again last night after the car had stood for a while.
And today, the light has been on permanently.
I'm not sure if its a strange thing, but intermittently, I am able to accelerate properly above 3000RPM, then it will go into limp mode again.
I am getting this checked out on thursday at a local citroen specialist - £25+vat for the diagnostic - but was wondering if anybody had had the same sort of problem and what maybe the problem could be.
I don't know if its a co-incidence but I had filled up at a supermarket about 20 mins before the AD light came on. I have read that supermarket fuels are not as good - is this true or fuel snobbery?
I am not that bothered about the car being in limp mode but am towing a caravan in about 8 weeks and wouldn't mind having the power there for that.
Regards

Update
Back at garage today for rectification of a separate problem with an injector seal and to review electrical connections etc re above diagnosis.
Discovered that piping to turbo pressure regulation valve was split. Smallish pipe in environment where rubber is likley to degrade leading so splits. These tend to open under load. Pipe replaced and all seems normal again.

I saw one of these today, the first for what seems like years!
I remember that for a good while there were a lot of these on the road, competing with Range Rovers in the luxury "in your face" 4x4 market.
But as RR seems to have moved up a level, the Land Cruisers seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth, certainly round the areas I drive in.
Did they lose out to the new breed of Pick-ups for business / commercial use? Would previous LC drivers now have a L200 or X5 or Range Rover?
Just curious! Always wanted a Landcruiser Amazon 4.2 !! Read more
Got overtaken by a speeding L200 Double Cab with super skinny lo profile rubber bands and the usual graphics, roll bars etc. Most ridiculous looking piece of crap I've seen for a long time. I doubt it will ever carry a load. Must be nice and bouncy riding on those leaf springs!
Still dealing with the Sedona fiasco (dealers fault not car) as a plan B found a nice diesel Carens at good price. Looking at web site 2.0 common rail diesel, 140 BHP, 6 speed box, Bosch common rail system. Same spec as VW etc. Is it a VAG unit in this?? Read more

Hi all,
I feel the need to let of some steam about my drive up the A1 from north east England to Scotland yesterday.
I could moan about the ridiculously long stretches of bendy single carriageway which mean that when you find yourself behind someone doing 45mph you are stuck behind them for the rest of the stretch, but I won't because I recognise that that's just how the road is.
I could moan about the high numbers of caravans slowing down the flow of traffic, but again I won't because it was Sunday and people are entitled to transport caravans if they want to.
What I will moan about is the 3 different occasions where I was driving along the single carriageway at 60mph with no one behind me, and people decided to enter the road from a side junction in front of me, causing me to have to step on the brakes and slow down to 35mph. These people all then slowly accelerated up to around 50-55mph and started cruising at that speed.
Why do they think it's ok to pull out and cause someone to have to almost halve their speed? Why do they feel the need to pull out and squeeze into the small gap in front of me when there's no one behind me? And if they're in such a rush that they feel they have to do this, why do they then motor along at 50? Are they so selfish that they want to get in front of me just on the off chance that I'm cruising at 45 and going to prevent them from going at 50 if I'm in front of them?
Am I right in thinking this is bad driving on their part or am I just being grumpy?

Aye....another year and he'll be on "Good Morning" terms with the locals.

I went back to the garage and mentioned the harshness and was told that was because the belt is new and it will go away when the belt stretches a bit.
I must say though it starts easier from cold. Before I was having to give it two goes on the heater plugs for it to start in a reasonable time, now it starts almost immediately after one go on the heater plugs.
