Been offered a factory ordered Volvo V50 2.0d s in metallic paint of my choice on the road inc 12m RFL for £14900 inc my old car(realistically worth £500) on the scrappage scheme. This is a local dealer so the logistics of getting my old car to him are good. Internet dealers could require me to get my car to supplying dealer anywhere in the country.
Is this a good deal? They want a quick decision.
should I be looking for more off/extras?
RRP is something like £20100

i just bought this 406hpi petrol car.the seller said it has a problem with the timing hub.
Which i thought it was an easy thing to fix. After taking to the mechanics some rejected it ,saying it has to reach peugeot company .
The news is that all the noise with the pulley has been fixed but it would not rev down mormally and the engine would not go beyond 45rmp when on motion the engine cut back to safe mode itself, while on motion.
The mechanic said he is not so sure what to buy next i have spent over £600 on it now.
What can i do help me ? Read more
Hello everybody,
Thanks to this forum I've found quite a lot of people who were willing to fill in my questionnaire (15 in 2 days!!). The questionnaire is about car advertisements and it's for my masterthesis Business Communication in the Netherlands, regarding a cross-cultural research. The thing is that when I can find 15 more people to fill in my questionnaire: I will be done for sure and ready to write my thesis.
So everybody, are you going to be one of the last 15 respondents to fill in my online questionnaire? Please fill it in, it is really helping me a lot!! It should take about 7 minutes to fill it in.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, and for filling in!

I have just had the following announcement through via the UK Ham Radio news network (Of which I'm a reader.) about an incident that is going to affect sat navs in Scotland:
"If you are driving in the very North of Scotland or the Orkneys between 6th and 16th of July, and your GPS system goes dead, it might be jammed, and the jamming is legal. The MOD will be conducting a GPS jamming exercise. The July tests will be for limited periods between 1100 and 1500. The location for the exercise is to sea westwards from 58 degrees 57.4 minutes North and 3 degrees and 13.9 minutes West, which is about 60 nautical miles west of Kirkwall. The MOD conducts occasional tests on military systems that may result in some loss of service to civilian users of the GPS system. This includes such equipment as in-car navigation devices and other networks that rely on GPS signals."
Now it isn't going to affect everybody because of the location involved, and weather conditions could extend the range of the jamming, but companies that rely on tracking devices in their vehicles may be affected.

I remember similar events around 7-8 years ago. It didn't affect the sat nav in my Omega. It is a reminder that people give far too much reliance on sat nav, mobile phones, twitter, Web 2.0, e-books, PDFs, the cloud, internet, emails etc...
If there was a cataclysm and everything powered down, there would be nothing left as it's all 'virtual'. In fact these could even be pulled from under our feet like a rug by the illuminati.
I've noticed a few learners are buying brand new cars before they even pass. Have some people just got too much money? I just don't get it. How do these people know they will pass? It is surely too much investment.
I paid £400 for a car when I was learning, when I passed I bought one for £350 but I admit I didn't feel safe in it so sold it for scrap then I bought my first proper car a high spec 99v Corsa B for £1150. I think my car is a perfect balance as it has 3 star NCAP (not great but that awful either) all the electrics, PAS etc but I have not invested too much capital into it either. I think I am very lucky to have a car which don't tend my finances, yes insurance is £50 a month and I spend around £50 a month on repairs but a new car would cost me at least £200 a month. My dad just keeps going on about how I am spoilt with my 10 year old car because his first car only ran on 3 cylinders, needed 1 litre of oil a week, had no brakes etc etc.
Also I know this just because I am an enthusiast but what is the fun in having a brand new car for a first car? Half the fun is the tinkering and seeing how long you can keep a ten year old car looking like its fresh out the factory for.
I do plan to buy a brand new car in the next 18 months and then keep it for 5 years but I just don't get how people can spend so much money on cars if they have just passed. My dads perfectly happy with his 12 year old Fiesta which is now worth £500 but it does the job safely and reliably.
Also I find it amazing how many young people work in Tescos for £12k a year yet insure a little 106 for £3k a year. Surely when a car costs that much of in terms of a percentage of income it defeats the object?
Do the general public just perceive old cars are unsafe and unreliable?

When i passed my test around 13 -15 years ago, i did not get my 1st car until about 4-6 months later.
The very 1st thing i did when I got my 1st car, i drove it for about 200 miles through various towns and country side no particular destination, with my then non driver girlfriend as a passanger.
I thought i knew it all then, but i still learn things today, it does not stop me however racking up the miles.
and for as long as i can drive i will continue to do so, now and again I will take the car out and to 150+ miles "just for the sake of it"
Weirdness today.
Went out to the Volvo after it had been parked for about 25 mins. Could hear a fan running which I thought was the rad fan, but on closer investigation turned out to be the heater blower. Unlocked the car, and sure enough, the fan was blowing away merrily. The fan was completely unresponsive to the control on the dash (manual air con, not climate). Switched on the ignition, and the fan suddenly came back under control of the dash control. Switched off the ignition and the fan quit as normal.
I'm guessing it's some kind of Canbus strop, but any ideas if this is a sign of impending problems? Never seen anything like this before.
Cheers

Hi All,
Anyone got any ideas on this? Its on an Alhambra 1.9 TDi (115 bhp) SE with climate control.
Few months ago i noticed that although around town the aircon works fine, at some point on a long run (ie 90 miles) it stops working.
So as a starting point decided to have the aircon serviced as it was due - about 3 years. Anyway no problems reported. Garage looked at the diagnostics too and no faults found. No loss of pressure or anything and I do trust the garage that does this for me.
After the service I tested again and around town, on lowest setting and with the fan speed at about 30% the vent temp drops to about 2C with the ambient at 26C (this was the hot weather a couple of weeks ago). So i was dead chuffed. That'll sort it I thought!
Did the long run again today and as before on getting there with the same test as above the vent temp only drops to about 10C with the ambient at about 21C!
Get home, engine cools test again and all is fine again!!!
Any ideas?
Cheers.

unfortunatley quite possible, have it checked out by a competent AC engineer. Once gauges are put on the system I think you will find its a pump problem causing swarf to block the control valve as it runs. Once the system stops & the pressure balances the swarf runs back from the control valve.
I hope there is a simpler explanation but I used to service the AC on a fleet of these & this was the most common issue. With the Galaxy the Ford equivalent you will find the ford dealer will only replace the whole AC system due to this particular common fault. used to cost approx £2800 at Ford
After 2 good long test drives in an Octavia Scout(was my preferred car) and borrowing Dad's 57 plate Octavia Elegance for a couple of nights I was still unable to find a comfortable driving position no matter how many adjustments I made. was a bit disappointed, overall running costs with Octavia made more sense.
The Skoda dealer was unaware of the extra scrappage (£3000 deal) allowance even when I pointed it out to him he couldn't find the info so said i was mistaken.
My 10 yr old Octavia has served me well will be sad to see it go. I have ordered the V50.
