June 2009
I have ALWAYS found this survey to mirror my own experience or near enough not to want to discuss it.
That is until the latest issue of what car dropped on the door step.
The survey covers cars registered from jan 2006 to dec 2007.
Now i would of thought that that period covered most of the old x trail, the new one was available from spring 2007.
Having owned the old model, and now the new, i think i know the down falls of both, although i only have 3k on my latest.
On the old car i had a new intercooler fitted due to an oil leak, also the sump plug leaked after a service. And that's it! My son now runs the old x trail, again no problems.
But i appreciate that many did have problems, so the xtrail was never in the top 5.
Prior to that with my two primeras, i never saw a oil leak!
Now the new x trail has a renault engine, and to be honest i would prefer nothing French, having said that the 171bhp dci i have is a peach, constantly getting over 40mpg.
Further i have had absolutely no problems, no recalls, the car has performed brilliantly, my wife loves it more than the old one!
Honest john reports no common problems.
Then we get the jd survey. Comments such as "owners slammed the styling"
now excuse me, but who buys a car that they find ugly?
Must be some strange people about?
It goes on air-con, audio, nav systems, i have had no problems, the air con is weak, but i read some were that some systems have smaller compressors to better economy?
You should always back up the sat nav DVD disc, i always run the copy, and keep the original at home. Other than that both sat navs are great, down side no post code, but i knew that before i bought the car.
It goes on to say lots of aircon faults.
Then is goes on "visibility wasn't up to scratch" now things are getting silly, the last xtrail was absolutely brilliant for reverse parking.
The new one has restricted rear view,(which i know about before i bought it), but a reverse camera on my model makes up for it.
So i can only assume that the survey covered both models, so doesn't that make the results a nonsense?
Then it ends " to round off a fairly poor performance, customers weren't impressed with the driving dynamics, fuel economy or high servicing and repair costs either"
Don't these people test drive a car before they buy?
I found the xtrail good to drive for a suv, i moved from a A4 audi quattro avant.
To be honest the new one is no better than the old, in my opinion, although the wife things the cars a lot better.
But at any rate both a decent to drive.
Economy, i don't know how these owners drive, but 30mpg towing 1330kg, high 30's solo (max 42mpg old model) previously, and oddly with the heavier more powerful new xtrail i get more, the trip computer is showing just under 42mpg at the moment, best i had 44mpg!
That's good isn't it?
Servicing. The old xtrail was no dearer than my Audi and i didn't think that was dear!
Not had a service on the new one yet, but i expect it to be dearer, but that's due to the pdf filter, but wouldn't a new A4 have one?
So gentlemen, i am not sure which car JD is talking about, i am convinced is two different cars, but at any rate its been put at position 94 out of 101 !!

Hello everybody,
I'm a student from the Netherlands asking anyone who has some spare time, to help me out with my study about car advertisements.
Currently I'm a doing a cross-cultural study about the evaluations of the Dutch and the English people about 20 car ads, which are presented in a online questionnaire. It should take about 7 minutes to fill it in.
I asked many people, but it is really difficult to find enough respondents who actually complete the questionnaire.
So, I'm thanking you in advance. Please enter the URL by clicking:

(Links to a web-page at Radboud University, Netherlands)
If you think it wasn't bad at all, actually kind of fun to fill in the evaluations, maybe you can pass it on to colleagues or friends??
Thanks anyway!

I found some of the adverts you used in the questionnaire interesting - others may want to take part to see how good/bad some adverts are.
This thread is now read only as it's here to get members to complete the on-line questionnaire.

What sort of price are dealers getting for scrappage cars if they can afford to bung a score to these people, and what actually happens to these cars?

it would appear not.
The check engine light for my car comes on now and again, (it's on permanently at the moment) the car doesn't go into limp mode. I took it into a Saab dealer last year when it happened and they did a diagnostic check and told me it was the sensor needed cleaning. I am loath to go and pay another £50 to be told the same thing. Does anyone know where in the car this sensor is so that I can clean it myself. Thanks Read more
It's a standard ODB socket and the codes are pretty much as per Vauxhall (the GM effect). I have a GENDAN doofer which plugs into my laptop
1.4 D4D Yaris. I would like to know if anyone as had a problem with the drivers Airbag light coming on. The Airbag light comes on if the wire is broken from the Squib. My problem arised while my clutch as been replaced, the steering colum was detatched and probably allowed to twist breaking the wire unknown to the mechanic or should i say (technician). Now he's trying to make out that there's a common problem with the Drivers Airbag. CAn anyone Help Read more
All too common issue with any car where the steering shaft is detached from the rack and the column is not locked into central position or the column is not centralised on re-assembly.The airbag coupling or clockspring has only a limited travel(usually around 2.5 turns lock to lock),beyond this ,the flexible printed cicuit will break/fracture.hth
I need to get a friend insured on my car for the motoring holiday so we can share the driving. However the quotes so far cost more than it would cost to hire a car. I got one quote for £130 for two weeks on a 1.2 16v Corsa, he only pays £400 a year for his own car!
Does anybody know of any companies that do this? My own insurance company say no but I will see how much it will be to add him as a named driver.
Thanks.

There's only one way around it - go and get some practice! Tank it up, tootle out along the M56, up the M6 to Preston, back down the M61 and M60 - practice on and off at a few junctions on the way - the worst bit of m-way driving is getting on, and getting off can confuse you with the feeling of speed. Should take a couple of hours and you will be sorted. Or terrified :-) Don't get into the "easier to drive at 55" mentality either - lorries are big and travel at that speed, get it up to 70 so you are not in their way. Get your Dad to go with you and give you some pointers on the way. The amount of time spent worrying about it so far, you could have gone and done it!
M-way driving is easy - look a loooooong way ahead and plan - particularly what everyone else is going to need to do, eg that car in front that is catching that lorry up and not realised, and will need to be in your lane in a minute - and you should hardly ever need to change speed, and it is not that hard work. Granted you will feel knackered the first time... but it does pass!
hi my wifes 307cc 2.0hdi 136bhp 06 36000miles reqs a 3rd turbo .warrenty finished in april so i could be facing a big bill .spoke to customer service , but because we are the 2nd owner ,and last service not done at a peugeot dealer could have problem with a claim . what can i do apart from bit the bullet and have it done . or fight pug .help please Read more
Find the hoses to and from the intercooler, look for oil weeps / smears around the joints where the hoses fit. Also look for oily smears along the pipes which would indicate a hole or split.
If you can find the turbo there will be smallish rubber tubing near the unit. Then follow that tubing around, to ensure it's all connected properly.
After that, you need diagnostics from a garage.

On page 151 of the whatcar mag, at the bottom of the page reference is made to how the results are arrived at.
The Qashqai is compared to the crv. Counting up the stars the nissan comes out TWO in front, the the end results are Qashqai=81.4%, but the crv with less stars, comes out at 81.5%?
The nissan beats the honda in exterior quality, and vehicle performance, by 1 star in both places, on vehicle exterior the nissan beats the honda with two stars.
Only in one category is the nissan beaten by the honda with 2 points, dealer service.
Yet the honda gets 2nd in group the nissan 3rd?
That's honda crv overall 9, quashqai 11th.
Any one know how the final figures are arrived at?
