Im no mechanic by any means, but what is involved in changing the intercooler myself? Mines gone, and the garage wants £450.00. I can buy a warranted second hand one for £124. Is it possible to fit it myself? Read more

Help, having a problem with a 2.0tdci mk2 focus. When starting from cold the idling is very lumpy for a couple of minutes accompanied by a fair bit of white smoke, plus there appears to be a very slight ?diesel/?oil leak on the top of the cylinder head next to the big plastic manifold thing (I've no idea what it is). Once the engine is warmed up a bit more it is mostly fine (tiny bit of idling lumpiness detectable occaisonally)

I've seen various references to suggest this might be injector issue/glow plug issue but can't imagine this would account for the slight leak or that it seems ok when warmed up. Alternatively I've seen a suggestion of the head gasket, would this be right on a car with 72,000 miles on it??

Any advice appreciated, having only had the car two weeks I'm already not happy with the main dealer service and now the car itself isn't right

The oil leak may be a gasket leaking and the white smoke is not good. Take it back to the dealer you purchased it from, if it came with a warranty then they should fix this type of problem under warranty, you may need to be firm with the dealer if they start playing you up.

A head gasket can go anytime if there is a weakness of some sort or there is slight metal distortion. 75k is higher than average mileage for an 05 reg, some things start to get tired and fail with the higher mileage.

Are these any good as a long termer? Im currently driving a 626 which I do like however it is a bit rusty! What is taken my fancy are the 5 doors or estates, is the 1.6 the best all rounder, or is the diesel worth any extra outlay? Mileage no problem, but want a good specced one.
Driving mixture of local and distance, expect 10-12k per year.
All helpful suggestions, (even other cars!) welcome!! Read more

Someone told me that you can buy an annual policy in the UK which gives you car insurance for the US so that you do not have to buy any insurance when hiring a car there.

Can anyone confirm this, and suggest possible providers? There's an outside chance I might spend June in the States. Read more

Had a look at those sites, thanks.

Holiday autos seems more expensive than the car I've found at netflights - bottom of the range car (economy) for £18 p.d. inclusive. Holidayautos is over £22 a day for same. I didn't really check it was like for like but I suspect it is.

The insurance4less site offers what I was thinking of, which is a CDW/SLI annual policy for £109, or £129 inclusive of excess charges. My thinking here was that I thought I'd seen very cheap car hire for American, as it assumes they have their own insurance. However I can't find that now!! Will keep searching.

The excess on the car I'm looking at is < $100 so paying £2.75 a day for a 3/4 week period to protect it is a gamble I won't be taking!

This opportunity arises as I am expecting a redundancy notice next week, which is why, if I do the trip, it has to be on a tight budget. I won't be eligible for jobseekers due to being paid 3 months salary in lieu, and I won't miss much in the job market by being out of it for a month or two...

The main reason for going would be the Chicago Blues Festival (tinyurl.com/bmfahp) followed by a sightseeing drive of somewhere between 1500 and 4500 miles (depending on budget and agreement by SWMBO!) down to Atlanta and back, taking in a number of "famous name" places - something I've long wanted to do. Accommodation will range from luxury hotels and some camping...

My 2003 Laguna Sport Tourer 160,000 miles, needs gearbox repair which will cost more than the value of the car. Otherwise the car is in reasonable condition have I any alternatives other than scrapping it? It would be nice to recover a few hundred pounds along the way but scrapping it seems to be such a waste! Any thoughts? Read more

My 2002 Laguna had the diff fail and so a new box was needed. I was quoted £1,700 for a replacement, as you say, more than the car's value.

I managed to source a second hand box for £400, keeping the car on the road for another year so far.

It's always tough to know when to let a car go, particularly when it is otherwise still in good fettle. £400 for the gearbox was worth it for avoiding the hassle of buying another car for about £1,500 who's history I did not know and could just as easily let go in a catastrophic way the folowing week.

Tucked away in the budget report...

The 2008 Pre-Budget Report set out reforms to vehicle excise duty (VED) for cars
registered from 1 March 2001 onwards, to incentivise the purchase and manufacture of lowercarbon
cars. Budget 2009 confirms these reforms, which include:
?from May 2009, an increase in the number of VED bands from seven to
thirteen. This will provide a greater incentive for drivers to choose a lowercarbon
version of car within their preferred class;
?from April 2010, the Government will further separate out the thirteen different
bands, in order to strengthen the environmental signal; and
?from April 2010, differential First-Year Rates of VED for new vehicles will be
introduced. These will provide a stronger signal to consumers at the point of
purchase.
7.53 To ensure that new VED rates and bands are clearly understood by motorists, the
Department for Transport has worked with the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership to update the
fuel economy label for new vehicles, and is continuing to work with industry to develop a fuel
economy label for the second-hand car market.
7.54 Budget 2009 also announces changes to the VED rules on refunds, six-month
licences and imported vehicles during the first year of vehicle licensing, from April 2010,
as a consequence of the introduction of First-Year Rates, as well as general changes to the
treatment of imported vehicles. Details are set out in Chapter A.
7.55 Company car tax (CCT) was reformed in 2002 and is now based on carbon emissions,
encouraging the take-up of more fuel-efficient cars in company fleets. In recognition of
advancing vehicle technologies, Budget 2009 announces that, with effect from 6 April 2011:
?the basic threshold for the 15 per cent band of CCT will be reduced by 5g CO2
per km, so that this band applies to cars emitting between 121 and 129g CO2
per km. The percentage of list price subject to tax will continue to increase
by 1 percentage point with every 5g per km increase in CO2 emissions, to a
maximum of 35 per cent;
?the cap on car list prices used to calculate the taxable benefit arising from
company cars will be abolished, so that drivers of expensive cars will be
subject to a fair level of tax

That is the problem with this government - they cannot just say "Put an A4 sheet of parer on the screen with the three MPG figures on it - they have to pay fewes to lots of people to sit on committe to discuss how they should do it . . .

Reminds me of the line in council meeting to discuss a new streetlight in the Goons' "the Evils of Bushy Spon" - it may be from Eccles.

"Lets get to the important issue - What colour will it be?"

Hi, I'm taking our car for an MOT soon and as I know NOTHING about cars I know I am going to get ripped off.

Our foot brakes are really bad at the moment, the hand brake doesnt work well (unless you really wrench the thing up it rolls backwards) and we have a big crack in our front window screen.

Also, think the tracking might be a bit funny and one of our back wheels may have a slow puncture - it's definately in need of a fix.. and quick!!

Assuming nothing else goes wrong, what should I expect to be quoted to fix all of this stuff? I'm a bit nervous that it's going to be more than the car is actually worth!! Please help! - Thanks! Read more
