"As part of a 10-year strategy to make Britain's roads "the safest in the world", the "time over distance" cameras that measure a car's average speed over many miles are also set to be introduced en masse." Read more

banning peds would be a good start too- they are reckless and wander across the road at will.
Also, why sell cars they are capable of incredible speeds if you don't expect the buyer to use it?
Mental thought procees the Government must have, ah, but then they can get you to buy an expensive fast motor and fine you for using it- brilliant.

The power of cars is totally at variance with the room on the road and the ever decrasing limits.

My diesel astra has developed a rattlle in the dashboard area, this is really prominent when accelerating from low revs, difficult to locate, tried emptying the glovebox etc, seems to be coming from the passenger side 'airbag' above the glovebox. Is this accessible through the glovebox ? Any help appreciated.

I thought that only applied to exterior trim?

Hi all

My dad got his 1998, 1.4 Cordoba serviced at a local garage yesterday. Now the car idles at 2000 RPM rather than hovering around 1000.

Any idea what's going on there?

Thanks,

Took it back and they said "yeah there's something wrong there" had a quick look around, plugged in their diagnostics thing in and then said "we don't know what's wrong, take it away for a few days, it might improve"

Great!

I'll get my dad to check this breather pipe out. Does anyone else have anything else to look at while he's in there?

Thanks!

Car is due a 2nd service - last year it was £135 but this franchised garage wanted £285 for 2nd service.

Phoned 2/3 outlets including a new franchise - quotes varied £210, £198 and the best £175.

That was 3/4 weeks ago - "the best price" called yesterday - had I had it done?

No but my imagination made me say locally £140+VAT = £161 and it is just down the road!

We can do it for £144 inc VAT!!

It is 14 miles away but worth the trip!

So what is the price of a service or do they just make it up? Read more

The viscosity is important for cold starting, especially in sub zero temperatures.
As i understand it, engine wear is greatest with a cold engine.

Back in the day, i would use around 10/30 in winter, and around 20/50 in summer, that was mineral oil changed ever 3000 miles.

Still hoping some one will respond to my post above, is that spec full synthetic, or semi?

A works van developed a droning noise recently.

It's definitely transmission as opposed to engine noise - it's relative to road speed not engine speed and it's still there if you press the clutch or coast in neutral.

It starts at about 20MPH and volume increases with road speed.

Because the noise reduces with left hand steering input, but more or less remains the same with right hand I suggested it was probably the front left-hand wheel bearing. It's certainly the first thing I would've gone for if it was my car.

The workshop (say they) replaced the front left-hand wheel bearing.

The noise is still there!

Any suggestions please on how it can be diagnosed? Read more

>>Because the noise reduces with left hand steering input, but more or less remains the same with right hand I suggested it was probably the front left-hand wheel bearing

They replaced the other side and cured it!

My status dictates I shouldn't jack up the vehicle to analyse the problem, but merely report it in the log book which they'll pick up at the next inspection!- dream on.

Today it would't lock occasionally and when it did, it wouldn't unlock.

I gave the lock a liberal appliation of WD40, to no avail.

I expect nothing to change in the future.

I have never had the need for a towbar (until recently I had a large van) but have finally become embarrassed asking favours from friends! I am moving large amounts of garden rubbish every weekend, horse manure and builders rubble, and am thinking of a 6' x 3' trailer. Once fitted, is it economically feasible to remove the towbar, as in 12 months I shall be changing my car?
And any recommendations please as to which type of trailer to buy.Thanks. Read more

L'escargot

An adjustable height towbar (rather than a fixed height) more easily accomodates different trailers.

I have had 1.9tdi diesel from new, just filled the tank with disel which "leaked" over the garage forecourt. This problem only occurs when the tank is filled up and not when it is partially filled. I have had the seal on the fuel pump replaced but it hasn't resolved the problem. Read more
