January 2009
Hi,
I recently bought a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe. This is a fairly large rugged 4x4 and has been well reviewed everywhere.
Unfortunately I failed to check the max roof load capacity before I bought the car, and have now discovered that despite being fitted with roof rails, the car is limited to a woeful 34kg! (My tiny fiesta is rated up to 75kg !!).
Does anyone know why Santa Fe roof capacity is so ridiculously low ?
Does anyone know what will happen if I should significantly exceed this value by going mad and putting something insane like 2 or 3 kayaks on top of my enormous SUV.
Will roof bars fall off, car roll over, doors fail to close or large dents appear in roof about each roof bar post ?
Can I do anything to beef up the max load capacity (I wouldn't want to go mad and try and match my macho fiesta, but 60kg would be useful !)
All help gratefully recieved.
Regards,

I'm after legendary (mythical?) Japanese reliability, but wanting a chain-cam diesel auto' seemed to have narrowed my choice down to the Mitsubishi Colt. But then I go and read (in this forum) that it has an AMT gearbox which is unreliable. (The smart ForFour has it, too.) If I've had a narrow escape, my thanks to the person who posted that.
However, I'm still no nearer my small(ish) chain-cam diesel auto'. It has to have been made for quite some time so is available in sufficient quantities for its price secondhand not to be unreasonable. (I am, of course, aware that prices for good s/hand cars are artificially high now because people are scared to commit to purchasing new ones.) If it's not going to be Japanese, what would Back Roomers recommend?
Thank you.

Try asking on the Toyota Owners club Yaris section.

You will have to register but it is free.
It is mainly rather boring as a forum as lots of Yaris drivers and few problems means relatively little interest.
Hi
I wondered if anyone would have any advice.
My Scenic starts fine, idles fine and runs fine at above say 15mph.
However when I pull away the car has started kangarooing.
I can only smooth it out by giving it more revs and slipping the clutch.
It feels like its firing on all cylinders and feels normal when idling and cruising.
This happens when the engine is hot or cold, basically all the time.
There are no warning lights coming up on the dash.
Would anyone have any ideas.
I've read things to do with broken or split vacuum hoses or the MAP sensor could be faulty.
Does anyone know where the MAP sensor is on the Renault Scenic (1998 1.6 petrol)

I was following a 52 plate A6 Avant earlier and all its indicators were stuck on - the only time iver ever seen this before was occasionally on old Ford/Vauxhalls and a few early Fiat Puntos before now.
Is this the result of aftermarket electrics being fitted badly or something, as ive not seen such a thing on any Audi before, let alone a fairly modern one.

I have used them in H4 and H7 sizes and indeed there is a noticeable
improvement in range
I bought some H4 Philips 'extreme' bulbs last week for my old MB with square headlamps.
I took the blurb with a pinch of salt, but Autoexpress did some tests and these and the Osrams came out top.
Anyway, i can't believe just how good and white the dipped beam is, don't mind if the life is shorter, it only takes 2 minutes to fit them anyway.
Don't know if its me, but i'm sure the dipped beam pattern is better defined now with less scatter, so probably less blinding to oncomers too.
The main beam is superb.
Put a set in the pick up now so hopefully that will be better too.
£18 a pair incl post off a particularly useful flea bay seller, well worth the cost.
the car is not used alot, and when I try to start sometimes it fails.Sometimes the lights on the dash come on and sometimes they don't.When I sit there for a while trying it will start,it seems to be getting worse,Help?[it is an automatic] Read more
Many thanks bigtee for your advice.Have done what you advised, can't tell if has worked yet.The car has only done 1500 miles since iv'e had it and since the last service. The car is in immaculate condition and only done 54000 miles all told.many thanks Leekyles
The used car market has reflected for many years that more miles = more depreciation.
Take two otherwise identical five year old cars for example. One has 50k miles, has been driven properly, has a full service history, one private owner and is in good condition. It has, however, been used mainly for domestic and commuting short run purposes primarily in heavy traffic.
The other car has 150k miles, has been driven properly, has a full service history, one company owner and is also in good condition. It, conversely, has spent most of its life on the motorway.
The first car would attract a much higher price than the second.
But would it be worth it........? Read more

I have just had the timing belt and balance shaft belt replaced on my 2002 Accord Coupe at the main Honda dealer.
Ever since I picked up the car, I have noticed a slight 'growling' noise at approx. 1500rpm, which I am sure is one of the belts (particularly noticeable from inside the car).
When I took the car back, the technician assured me that the noise would go away in a few weeks, after the new belts have 'bedded-in' to the rollers.
Is this correct, or are the belts too tight?
I don't want to damage the water pump or any other bearings.

Just to give an update...I took the car back to Honda and they 're-adjusted' the timing belt.
The noise has now gone away.
Just to be clear, I originally described the noise as a 'low level growling'.
Maybe I should have said a 'whirring' noise, which was quiet, but annoying.
I think that the belt may have been too loose, rather than too tight.
Anyway, it's fixed now, and I've added this information to help others.
Thankyou for your replies !

Have exactly the same problem, car broke down christmas day, carried out the same tests, no diagnostic faults. Is there a fuel pump edu/ecu for this model? Is known to be a problem on the 1.7 diesel model.

I think.... IF the OP ignored the manufactures weight limits, he would find his self uninsured.......
that to me is good enough reason not to do it.
