Hi,

I am narrowing down some car options and wonder if anyone can tell me what sort of price I should be paying at a dealer for:

Mk II Honda CR-V (2.2 i-CTDi Sport). It is 06 06 reg and has 39,100 miles on the clock. The dealer has it on the market for a fiver short of 10K. I checked using Whatcar's price tool and it came back with £8,750.00 as a price to pay at a dealer.

I would be grateful for some input on the price and what do people think about buying a diesel CRV with 40K miles on the clock? Anyone know if the 40K miles means the car is near a big service, or any service for that matter, or not?

Thanks for any advice,

1. Yes the dual zone climate does work.

2. I think they look nice, apart from that I don't think there is any tangible benefit.

Breaking news is that Fiat will tie up and have 35% equity in Chrysler, and access to technology etc. Fiat do not have to fund Chrysler through the future.

Will Fiat be the saviour for Chrysler, or will it be to little to late and damage Fiats progress, or bring them both down?

'scuse me if it's already been commented on but WHY would FIAT, or any company, want to link up with Chrysler? It must be 30 years since Chrysler was first bailed out by the US government, ten years or so of Daimler ownership ended in Daimler beig glad to get out at a much lower price than they paid and Daimler are still " interested in selling their remaining 20% stake". I'm sure they are but who's daft enough to buy? Isn't it like forming a partnership with the Titanic's anchor about 20 minutes after the iceberg hits?

I currently own a Fiat Multipla (62K currently) and a Chrysler Voyager (89K currently). In my opinion this is a marriage made in heaven as both companies seem to have appalling build quality. I have been working on cars for the best part of 25 years and have never come across cars where manual transmissions break down with such frequency or that suffer from such terrible electrical gremlins until I bought these. When I encountered my particular issues I thought, hey that's bad luck, but then I started searching on the internet and hey presto found I was not alone. No not indeed by any small margin was I alone. Prior to purchasing these two demon possessed metallic objects I had only ever had Japanese cars, Nissan, Toyota and Mazda. To give you a comparative idea

1997 Nissan Primera GX - 230K miles and not a single issue (timing chain was starting to tick a bit)
1994 Mazda 323 - 198K miles and no issues whatsoever
1993 Toyota Previa - 210K miles only issue was head gasket at 178K

and this is just a small sampling of the cars I have owned. Never ever ever have I had transmissions fail until I met Chrysler and Fiat.

Now I know certain French and German cars also fall foul on the electrical side but for these two to consider a get together it must be fate. Just imagine how bad they can be when they put their minds together.

Good afternoon,

Would anyone happen to know whether it is possilbe to fit three child seats on the back seats of an Octvia II estate?

Many thanks! Read more

Probably not - it has two sets of anchorages.

Suggest you ask the question on Briskoda.

Since Toyota dropped the Previa a couple of years back, I've been wondering if they would bring out any replacement. Today, passing Jemca (big franchised Toyota dealer in North London) I saw a row of brand new 58-reg Estimas. Not the grey import skinny old shape Previas much favoured by mini-cabbers, but an all new shape.

Nothing listed on Toyota's web-site though. Does anyone else know anything? Read more

Surely Toyota HQ won't like
their franchised dealers selling grey imports?

Mazda GB were quite happy for their dealers to sell 'nearly new' and used Eunos Roadsters alongside their official UK stock. When we bought our MX-5, we were invited to look around a selection of both.
As the salesman said of the grey importers, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em".

AIUI, this seems a really bad idea.

How will dealers operate ?
Will they have to put the reg on their trade policies as soon as they take the car in ?

Interesting post Smokie. A friend of mine had a last of the line Scirocco 'Scala' of that era in Helios Blue metallic. In places, the lacquer was peeling and bubbling off the base coat - looked very odd.

Lots of new (presume imported) cars are stored at Avonmouth docks near Bristol - these are clearly visible from the M5.

Help me, my 2003 (52plate) passat has broken down with the same problem 3 times in 6 months each time I get told it is the tensioner?? and it costs me £300-400 to get it fixed, I can't believe it is the same thing each time. When it breaks down it comes up alternator workshop and the power steering goes completely so it is nigh impossible to steer, although the car starts perfectly. Help me please, oh by the way I am female and my mechanical knowledge is limited!! Read more

Long shot. The alternator is fitted with a spragg clutch, a one way clutch, if this has seized then it thrashes the belt and the tensioner. The clutch can be checked in situe. The tensioners are good for 100,000/150,000 but best changes with the second cam belt change as removing the front of the car just for a tensioner makes it very expensive. Regards Peter
