I'm surprised this has not already been mentioned.

Yesterday's Telegraph Motoring section had an excellent article on speed cameras. It is well worth a read:

I doubt this will have any effect on government policy though as they prefer simple sound bite politics. Read more

As Dick Dastardly would say "Drat and double drat!" Criminal minds are always one step ahead of the law. Rethink needed. How about this:
Only photographic evidence showing the driver's face to be allowed in prosecutions.
(Cue massive run on sales of burkas, GW Bush masks, all round black tints, face transplants, etc...)

An abnormal load is due to travel along the M5 from Avonmouth on Sunday towards junction 19 of the M4.
Police are asking motorists using both motorways to allow extra time for their journeys.
The load, which is due to leave at 0500 GMT is around 470 tonnes, 90.5m long (296.916 ft), 5.5m wide (18.0446 ft) and more than 5m (16.4041 ft) high.
A second abnormal load, also heading for Oxfordshire, is due to leave Avonmouth on Sunday 18 November. Significant delays

The loads will leave the M4 and travel along the M32 to junction one, along the A4174 Avon Ring Road, eastbound along the A420 and onto the A46. They will park in a lay-by near Tog Hill off the A420 overnight on the relevant Sunday before continuing the journey at 2200 GMT on Monday along the A420, A46 and then eastbound along the M4 accessing the motorway at junction 19.
Advance warning signs will be displayed along the A4174 and A420 and the haulage company will be contacting residents living in Warmley and Wick making them aware that the abnormal load will be travelling through the villages.

Police will be escorting the load but have warned that significant delays are expected as the load will be travelling at very low speed.

Finally got one to work. Used Nero, 80 minute Memorex disc and burnt as data - following the "burn MP3" option in Nero doesn't seem to work nor does Media Player 11.

SWMBO now has a disc in the CD player with 101 tracks.

All I need to do now is to work out how to put albums on in folders!

Will also try this process with the Imation discs tried originally and see if they work - at lease CDRs are cheap.

Happy Blue!

I was reading the thread about getting brighter headlights (up to 80% brighter than standard). Does anyone know how easy it is to pull out the old ones on a Legacy/Outback and put new ones in? Read more

Dip beam, with Halfords Super Brilliance +50% H7 bulbs, are excellent - by far the best headlights I've ever been behind, probably due in part to the reflector design. They give a Z-beam with an absolutely crisp cut-off. I guess the Outback's self-levelling rear suspension helps by keeping the lights pointing where they should.

My local Halfords has a supply problem on the HB3 the main beam needs so I'm still using standard mainbeam.

Hi all, I bet someone can help me answer this question. I need to do a project on BMW group and their approach to R&D and Innovation.

The very first question that I need to answer is how much they spend each year on R&D as a proportion of total turnover, I've been scouring their annual report and looking at the cash flow statements but I can't find this figure anywhere!

Go on, you know you want to help! :-)

Close enough, once I've managed to fill up 2,500 words on BMW I need to cram another 500 in about another company for comparison! Merc's as good as any company i suppose!

So far I'm at 172, so just a few more to go and then I'm done then, I do wish there was somewhere I could just buy this degree/piece of paper from, the stuff that I seem to be learning has so far had very little bearing on my actual job and I can't help but wonder why I am sat here at 1:20am trying to spew words into my laptop!

Apologies if this has been done to death before. I'm looking to buy a second hand diesel - with something like a C4, prices drop like a stone from new, so new doesn't seem to make too much sense.

But, if I owned a diesel, and accidentally put petrol in it, I suppose the first move would be to sell it asap.

Is there any way of telling whether a car has been misfuelled? If it has - and has been drained etc so that it runs again, what are the likely long term effects on reliability? Is it likely to pack up within months, where there might be some warranty left, or might it take a year or two to die? If an engine had been started (or attempted to) with petrol in it, is it a dead cert that the engine is on the way out?

If there are tens of thousands misfuels each year, does that mean that there are tens of thousands of used diesel on the market waiting to cause the new owner endless grief?

It just seems a bit excessive to buy new solely on the ground to ensure it has had the right fuel.

Any light shed would be most helpful.

Checked out the VED yesterday

and it's band G For a 300d £400 next year

Hang on, a Merc 124 will be too old to go into bandings anyway so will be about £190/200

I understand that band G £400 only applies to vehicles registered after March 2006.

Or do you know something i dont?

Don't blame you going for another xantia.

I've got a Nissan Almera 1997 - the centre console has buttons including the hazard lights, but whilst driving at night I noticed the light behind the hazard lights button has burnt out.

I've located two screws half-way down the console, however, I'm not sure whether this is a good idea, i.e. worth it for the sake of a bulb.

Does anyone know if I'm likely to cause more issues if something falls out etc when I remove the centre console?

It looks like it'll unscrew and come away but on it is the radio, two vent fans, the buttons for fog lights and rear demist.

I really don't want to risk anything so if anyone can advise whether it's a simple process I'd be grateful, cheers. Read more

As a result of trawling through the website mentioned in the 'Another Acetone Thread' I found this link:

www.scangauge.com/

If your vehicle does not have one of those on board computers then this could be the toy for you. It seems to provide much more data than just fuel consumption and also shows fault codes which can be reset. All for $169.95 - So that should be about £85?? There are English agents.

Or contact www.fullchatsreallyboredonasaturdaynight.com (only joking!)

I have actually purchased a couple of these in the past and installed them on Subarus. They've been around for a couple of years - essentially an OBDII/EOBD scanner. There are UK agents, but I actually bought mine from a dealer in the US for £75 and had to pay around £12.50 import tax - at the time the UK distributor wanted £115 + delivery. This is at least a year ago though, so prices may have come down with the exchange rate.

You can buy a 'blendmount' which fits to the interior mirror support on a Subaru, and other vehicles (look on US ebay), enabling the scanguage to be mounted above the mirror - very neat.

The unit plugs into the EOBD 16-pin connector.

Fuel consumption measurement is not particularly accurate (you calibrate it yourself), so I wouldn't buy it for that reason alone. The unit is quite small and neat and you can change to colour of the LCD display etc. It would also fit into a DIN-size dash opening with some DIY-brackets etc.
