Bit like this one aistigave.hit.bg/Logistics/ that I think appeared on here some time ago?

Hi i have a 1997 Vauxhall Vectra 2.0 LS. when i bough the car a week ago it didnt have a ny faults. but middle of last week i have had a very high pitched whistle from the rear of the engine bay. i have checked the pipe to the air filter and cant seem to find where it is coming from. the sound does go when you accelerate but is constant at idle. also it has now started to cut out at idle. it can sit there idling for 15 min with no problems, but when i drive for a bit then stop at traffic lights etc it will idle then just cut out, will restart with turn of the key. but its getting quite annoying.

any suggestions.........

This was posted in the Attic (attached to a whinging sticky from me) Brought it downstairs for more exposure. Read more

Re: the whistling, Check that no exhaust studs have snapped off.

Re: tick over problem. Sounds like the all too common problem of a sticky idle speed control valve that could do with a clean.

I have a S-reg diesel estate 5 speed manual on 125,000 miles on original clutch.

Over the last 500 miles it has been getting progressively harder to get into 2nd, particularily when coming down the box. Other gears engage OK.

This stiffness is not all the time, 9 out of 10 changes feel normal.

The gearstick feels rather dead when changing into 2nd. Firstly I feeling some resistance on the gear stick and then having to pull a bit harder to get it engaged, not the usual smooth motion.
It is still perfectly driveable.

The bite point of the clutch has not moved and footpedal action feels 100% normal - even on a 'stiff' gearchange.

I had a garage change the gearbox oil 3000 miles ago as a routine service.

Any ideas please.

Thank you, Vinnie. Read more

I have the same car with 137k on the clock, and on mine 2nd gear can be a little stiff on downchanges, and also on upchanges when the oil is cold. It has never got any worse though, and I just put it down to wear and tear.

The gearbox on a Mondeo TD does work quite hard for a living - not the most flexible or muscular of engines, bless it.

Hello - hoping that someone can give me some advice. I'm getting alot of noise from the turbo charger when the changing gear, following depressing the clutch and lifting on the accelerator. Even at low engine revs it sounds like an pack of geese, this sound quickly dissapates after a couple of seconds. The car is at 130k and is serviced every 10K oil change etc, the engine has started to burn a bit of oil recently, but nothing extreme. Read more

Get an expert to have a listen fairly urgently - catastrophic turbo failure can easily take the engine with it.

I have been trying to sell my 3 year old Renault diesel (30k miles) without success for a couple of weeks now. No serious interest. I do not think it is overpriced (In fact it was the cheapest private sale on autotrader) in relation to age/spec/mileage/condition. I have a company car arriving shortly so this car is surplus & need to sell. I could wait until the New Year and put the car in my garage (it will still be insured) mileage would remain the same and I could really polish it up (although it is fairly good already). I have contacted a couple of auctions and they a giving me a guide price of £6100 (clean condition), My car is at least that but obviously I would need to pay +£300 in auction fees. I tried to sell at just a little over the clean condition price quoted. Do the backroomers think demand will pick up after Xmas/New Year and it may be worth holding on to the car for 2 or possibly three months? Car is taxed till May, Mot Nov and next sevice due May. Minemapper, I think you have identified the wrong car as mine has about 8 pictures. I have sent the link to the ad on autotrader via your gmail address. I know it is only a gmail address but I would caution about posting it on a forum Cheers Bob

I'm looking to add a sub woofer to a 5000 Radio/cassette/cd changer.
Looking at the back of the unit there is not the usual phono line outs but a couple of unconnected sockets.

Does anyone know if any of the unused pins offer a line out or where to find the pinouts for he sockets.

Hi

Took the wifes Frontera for a service & MOT on Saturday to our local 'UK Wide chain store garage'. The MOT passed and all was ok. The tracking was out so they did that too.

On the way home the car felt 'slightly' different due to the tracking but usually i'd expect it to run more smoothly after having new oil, plugs & filters but it didn't. I lifted the bonnet and nothing looked like it had been touched. The oil filter, for example, didn't look any cleaner than anything else under the bonnet even though it should have been brand new.

On the service sheet there is a large section stating that the following checks had been carried out with the 'wheels off', if the wheels had come off wouldn't I have finger prints in the brake dust?

Does anyone have any advice on how I can prove my car has not been serviced because I am pretty sure it hasn't but don't know how to prove it. Read more

Sorry, my mistake!
I think I have twigged which firm it is. Not doing the job properly is a fraud IMO!

Hi all,
THis morning it was very cold (for the UK), prob just above freezing. The clutch pedal was light for the first few inches of travel & kind of 'stuck' half way up on return, and did return the whole way but felt lighter than normal. The car drove & performed fine, and as it warmed up the problem lessened but didn't completely go (after 40 mins / 25 miles driving). Any ideas?

Follow up to my last post. After 5 attempts my local Porsche Dealer has fixed it. I should say that they have worked very hard, had the clutch out 3 times replaced both cylinders (one twice), flexible pipe, the whole clutch. Fortunately it was under warranty, but we had some awkward moments when the dealership thought it might be the clutch which is not covered by Porsche much vaunted warranty. My view was that if an unwarranted part required replacement, I would pay for the parts, but they should pay for the labour as they had inspected the clutch as part of another warranty repair ? the famous oil seal leak ? which I thought Porsche had fixed in 02/03 models. This was agreed by the dealership. Fortunately it never came to me having to pay for the clutch as they realised that even after they fitted it still didn?t fix the fault, so they replaced my old one. I should mention that Bournemouth Porsche were first class in their unrelenting efforts to fix this really annoying fault. They also lent me some really nice cars during the time (about 2 weeks in total) that they had my Boxster S, I had a Cayman S and a 987 Boxster. Thanks Porsche Bournemouth.

The Fix

Finally they found that the spring in the pedal box was 'twisted' they removed the spring and reassembled with the original spring and it worked fine. They say the spring cannot twist itself. I can only assume that this has been a problem with the car from new. I first noticed it not long after I bought the car, but the fault was very occasional, but more latterly the fault had become more regular. When I first described the fault I said it was very much like carpet stuck in the pedal mechanism or similar. I even mentioned the spring, but was told there is not one! So it appears that the spring in the pedal box may have been incorrectly assembled and the fault only appeared after sometime. Pedal action feels ?right? now.
Hope that anyone who has a similar problem finds this useful. Finally if this sounds similar to your problem, try the usual clutch bleeding, cylinder, hose clips first, as I think they are more common faults and likely to be cheaper fixes. I am told that getting to the pedal box is not easy and therefore likely to be expensive.

The Gingerous One

Having never ever bought a new car (or indeed one costing more than £2k and I've owned about 19) found myself going around the garages with my fiancee looking for a new car to replace her 206 after 6 years of service to her.

What I was expecting :

Blokes in sharp suits, talking the talk, "yesss lookat our lovely cars. lots of pen and cup holders and for you darling it has a nice heater, far better than that old Pug of yours. sign here now otherwise I'll lock you in a room until you do. These cars are excellent and I am this months winning salesman. Yes Yes Yes I'M A WINNER (whilst punching the air). What do you mean you want to take it for a test drive ? Why ? It's a fantastic car, just look at it."

Ok ok I going slightly over the top. It also assumes that they would recognise the presence of my fiancee whilst we were talking.

First garage selling cars that are made in Sunderland & other places said "ahh yes you'd like to take it for the test drive. The specification of the demonstration car is this , Is this the car you are interested in ? Yes, oh good. Step inside whilst we do some paperwork then you can take it out for an hour or so, both of you can drive it. Plenty of fuel in it so take it for a good run."
did paperwork, came out to car, got comfy in it, guy showed me all around the controls & off we went. Took it out for just over an hour, both of us had a go in it.

Back to dealer, sat down with the salesman, had a nice civilised discussion about the car, its' options and he also gave a very good p/ex price for 51 '206' LX 50k, one owner and then said "ok, we've been through the options, would you be prepared to commit now ?"

"No, we'd like to see other 'normal' small family cars first"

"Oh. Is there anything further I could do to help you commit today ?"

"No, we'd really like to test drive other cars in its' class. e.g the Golf"

"Ok, well here's my details, give me a call if you have any further questions."

and off we went. I was very surprised, no "hard sell", no locked in a room until we signed or anything.

Went to another dealership, no petrol Golfs in (e.g. 1.6 Match FSI as it got What Car's COTY award) so had to settle for nearly new diesel one. Now we had a shorter test drive, bloke (sorry, 'salesman' but I couldn't tell from his attire) with us. Naturally he generally spoke to me generally, only really to my fiancee when asking her about the p/ex.
Had to settle for diesel Golf, I'm not keen on diesels in cars and this didn't help mind. I also/read/heard that it was apparently difficult to stalla diesel, must be all that torque. Well I stalled it coming out of the showroom, maybe it was going from 1st -> 5th that did it :-) where is all that torque...?

He'd asked us about mileage and we said we only do 10k/year so whether it does 25mpg or 55mpg is pretty irrelevant really, why would we want a diesel ?

short test drive, both did drive it, salesman did a poor impersonation of a german speaking English during the test drive (this was meant to be 'head office') but by this point our mind was made up.
took car back, guy left us alone for a while, then came back and said "So, is this the car for you ?" and we both said "No."

To which he wasn't very happy and walked off.

anyway, decision made

but it was quite a amusing experience. And no, we are not going round 17 different garages to test various other cars, we don't have the time!

It's quite an interesting experience, it might have been interesting to see what he would have offered on the Pug but we weren't going to waste ours and his time any further.

cheers
