pros and cons of road pricing discussed.

Poorly made programme, watched the whole thing and learned not a jot.

Unfortunately government and press still don't understand that the car is the ONLY option for a considerable number of people. They need to start to design things to accept this. Main people don't live in hugely over populated cities, just ordinary towns where poor road design and decisions cause traffic chaos.

Hi all, I recently bought a Corolla (E11) with a 1.3 4E-FE engine. Nice car, but it wouldnt start this morning (and didn't even seem like it was close to doing so) but started instantly when I got home from work (even though it was still v.cold!!) and was just after some ideas.

I recently renewed the sparkplugs and HT leads and it runs great otherwise so I don't think its timing or ignition related? Do these cars have some sort of cold-start sensor?

Thanks chaps.

PS, no engine management lights are showing, and starter spins over nice and quick.

I thought the 4E-FE had a distributor and rotor arm.
If so, if it was like my mid 90's Corolla check the condition of these as the end of the rotor can get pitted and rusty.
But as said, it can be many things, so need to work your way through all the possibilities.
I trust a squirt of WD or water repellent spray did not work either?

I went down to London this weekend. Drove down Saturday night from Manchester at about 7:30pm and had a lovely journey, with the cruise control set on about 74mph. It was a very relaxing drive, with almost no need to touch brake pedal or even accelerator, until I got to Luton for the contraflow. Then I came upon idiocy of the highest order, with people switching lanes, getting up your backside, speeding up and slowing down unnecessarily.

It was similar coming home on Sunday evening about the same time. However I also came across foreign truck drivers going well over the contraflow limit of 50mph and also driving in the outside lane for several miles. On going further north I discovered a Vectra driver with those blue tinted headlights that I cannot see in my rear view mirror and a combination of the window tint and attenuation of light from the bulbs meant that I almost swung in front of him on two occasions, simply because I didn't see him. I have never had that problem with other cars.

Today, I was following another car, not too closely, but close enough that there was not a huge amount of space to fit another car in. A BMW driver missed his junction and simply went right through the gap without indication causing all manner of screaching and squealling sounds from an Outback and several other cars near me.

Arrgh......

I once drove a BMW - don't see what people see in them!

oilrag

Just been looking at another forum and (sigh) yet *again* a young lad with a new common rail Grande Punto thinking of running it on cooking oil.

You try to post advice but its ignored, such is the focus on doing it.

why? Do you think there`s just just *no awareness* and the fuel injection system and pumps can only be visualised as a plastic squeeze bottle?

"Sorry I did my sums wrong, its closer to 110 million litres."

Still impressed though !

Hi! I just bought a 1995 compact 316i and have already had a couple of problems.

1st the sump was cracked, which I found out is quite a common problem because they are made of relatively soft aluminium. That's fixed, but now I've noticed that the power is really uneven. I can feel little surges and dips in power when accelerating hard. Air flow sensor maybe?

Anyone have any thoughts?

Cheers

I went to pick our Octavia up tonight and the guy told us he had put petrol in the car by mistake. The station is only one minutes drive away from the garage but I was just wondering is there anything to be worried about? The garage have said they will put it in writing that if anything goes wrong with the car they will be responsible.

What do you think? Read more

Thanks to everyone for your posts and I now have an update.

Even after we were told the car had been driven with petrol in the tank (before the post on this forum) we were assured by the reputable garage that everything would be fine. At this point I did not have a clue how bad it would be for the car so we went along with it as we trusted the salesman. So after the posting on the forum and a call to a mechanic I was a little concerned with the situation but hoped the car would be fine.

So we were supposed to get the car this morning at 10.00am and 10 mins before this we got a call from the salesman saying the car is fine and they were just going to fill it up with diesel and we should get the car within an hour. Then about 40 mins later we get a call from the salesman to say their pump was not working and they would have to drain the tank manually and because of this we would not get the car until tomorrow. As you can imagine the alarm bells started ringing and we told the salesman that we were just going to come down to get our money back to which he said "fine".

We went down to the garage where the sales manager was waiting for us. To say he was the most ignorant and aggressive person we have probably ever met is an understatement. He was refusing to put the money back on my card and would only give us a cheque(not sure about this as it surely could be open to abuse). As you can imagine the wife was not very happy about this and got a bit annoyed which in turn caused the manager to get even more abusive. At this point I decided to leave with my 10 month old son as he was getting a bit distressed and left my wife and her father to deal with him as I am not known for my patience ;o)

Then a miracle happened as the manager was writing the cheque the car came round the corner, he then said the car was fine and was just about to phone us before we turned up. So we got the cheque and everything is fine now but I feel sorry for the person who ends up buying the car.

What has happened to customer service these days it just keeps getting worse. I do however feel sorry for the salesman even though he did put petrol in the car as he did bend over backwards to give us what we wanted. How the manager has still got a job is beyond me.

iv recently recieved my dads civic.. last week in fact... very pleased but only 1 problem....

The gear box, ball bearings need changing and the car "hops along" in 1st/2nd gear... my motorsports teacher at coll reckons it might be the spark plugs or the ignition coil.
anyone know what kind of ignition coil is it?

is it just 1 for all 4 cylinders or a separate one for each?

what kind of ball bearings do i need 4 the gear box without taking it apart ?

And it's very unlikely there are any ball bearings in the gearbox; roller bearings perhaps. They certainly won't be accessible without taking the box apart.
But the symptoms you describe sound more like a clutch or throttle problem; did you mean the clutch bearings?

Please can anyone tell me why my car wont start on cold mornings and what I need to add/do , it's always been a bit sluggish as the turbo has gone but otherwise runs fine.. I flattened the battery today trying to get it started but even with jump leads connected to neighbours jeep the immobiliser wouldn't switch off! Grrr!.. Sorry Newbie AND female!
I managed to get the keyfob to turn off the immobilser but still no joy..im waiting til the orange light goes out and then an extra 10secs but it still sounds as though its draining??..thanks in advance

Driving near home yesterday with SWMBO as passenger, she asked me why I didn't acknowledge one of our neighbours. I replied that I never really notice who's driving another vehicle, just being aware that it's there and what it's doing. She found this most puzzling....

Do other Backroomers actually take the trouble to give other drivers the 'once over', or am I alone in 'ignoring' them in this way? Read more

A friend of mine is selling her cheap (£795) car to a 17year old girl who has just passed her test. Her mother is buying the car for her as a present, and does not drive. My friend said she would try to help her find the best insurance deal, so are there any companies anyone could recommend who might specialise in this field.
Obviously she will buy online and encourage daughter to obtain her 'Pass Plus'....out of curiosity what is the insurance group on a Daewoo Lanos 1.6 petrol please?
