An abnormal load is due to travel along the M5 from Avonmouth on Sunday towards junction 19 of the M4.
Police are asking motorists using both motorways to allow extra time for their journeys.
The load, which is due to leave at 0500 GMT is around 470 tonnes, 90.5m long (296.916 ft), 5.5m wide (18.0446 ft) and more than 5m (16.4041 ft) high.
A second abnormal load, also heading for Oxfordshire, is due to leave Avonmouth on Sunday 18 November. Significant delays
The loads will leave the M4 and travel along the M32 to junction one, along the A4174 Avon Ring Road, eastbound along the A420 and onto the A46. They will park in a lay-by near Tog Hill off the A420 overnight on the relevant Sunday before continuing the journey at 2200 GMT on Monday along the A420, A46 and then eastbound along the M4 accessing the motorway at junction 19.
Advance warning signs will be displayed along the A4174 and A420 and the haulage company will be contacting residents living in Warmley and Wick making them aware that the abnormal load will be travelling through the villages.
Police will be escorting the load but have warned that significant delays are expected as the load will be travelling at very low speed.

470 tonnes?
Would love to see the tractor unit(s) pulling that.
Will also post this on another site if that's ok?

Years ago there was a transport company in Newport , Monmouthsire, (I think they were Bulwark Transport Ltd - but I can't be sure) who used to transport extremely long and heavy loads.
They used a massive tractor unit at the front pulling and at the back, a pusher tractor.
The pusher unit not only "pushed" but enabled the centre load bearing unit to be swivelled by tracking across at angle to negotiate corners etc.
I haven't seen one for years. Has anyone else?

B-I-L used to work for one of these heavy haulage companies in England. Took me into their yard one day, the eqpt was amazing as were all the pictures of completed projects.
The trailers are made up of a long line of independent "axles" that can swivel through 360 degrees via the driver with a remote control! Was great fun playing with them.
They used to do all sorts of moves like turbines etc and in doing so, they had pretty much full approval to do what they wanted with street furniture etc as long as it was put back the way they got it! IIRC they managed to get under one bridge by planing away all the tarmac and then relaying new tarmac when they were done!

A few years back I did some work for UKAEA at Windscale on the decommissioning of the AGR and was intimately involved in the moving of the lagest radioactive load ever to have been on the public highway, four 190 tonne heat exchangers. Seeing them get through a pinch point with about 6 inches to spare between it and someone's house was quite something.

Somewhere on the A1 recently I saw an aeroplane wing being taken on an absolutely massive transporter.
Also I have seen a pod from the London Eye on the back of a "wide load" type transporter at the M25/A2 junction!
|
i once followed a wide load up the A47 and sat on top were half a dozen chaps with long poles pushing the phone lines up and out of the way of the load , and removing tree branches as they went
