September 2007
Evening all. Have recently bought a 1990 H Volvo 940 TD with 190K OTC. Its the 2388CC straight 6 engine (I believe its a VAG unit) And I want to change the 2 cambelts on it. A couple of questions:-
* Are there any holes in the block (like the PSA XUD) to lock the crank solid? And if so where can it/they be found?
*Ive bought the new belts & a waterpump to fit. Should I replace anything else in that area?
*Any idea on how you get the injection pump belt off in one piece?
*Any other info, hints tips or pointers that you can give me would be much appreciated.
I have done a search and cant find any info on it. So hope one of you guys and gals have done one before and can give me some info on it.
Many thanks in advance.

Cargiant has got a Honda 2.0 Exec Tourer at the moment for £5,399 - it must have a high milage but it looks to be an absolute bargain assuming its got FSH and has been sitting on a motorway for the last three years.
I am missing something?

I can say this now - it's so long ago. When this happened to my father, he would ask one of his brothers to trade it in against a newish car from one of the local(ish) main dealers for him. Eventually, the Triumph dealers in Burnley twigged what we were up to, and so, he had to go further afield to offload the dross.

Why are some cars and not others referred to as "people carriers"? All cars carry people. Talk about snobbery!

I had the same problem once, 3 little ones(all in car seats), SWMBO, a week away and a Metro.
Luggage included a travel cot, moses basket, stroller, baby seat etc etc etc.
SWMBO comes out with a suitcase full of essentials. "That'll fit somewhere" she says, I say, "no problems, dear, you just pop it in whilst I put the kids in."
10 minutes later all the essentials had disappeared upstairs ...
We now travel light, six of us, one small rucksack each. Makes life so much easier. Particularly if you don't need to check the bags in at the airport.
Whatcar have carried out a study (read it at whatcar.co.uk) on Superfuels which concludes many of them do nothing in terms of mpg and acceleration times.
Looking at the results for a 1.6 Focus, Total and Esso 97 octane fuels come out above Shell V power for improvements in acceleration....which is what I found when I switched from shell to total...
Worth a look anyway.... Read more
My Shell V Power test is not yet over but I'll go back to normal Shell. The extra cost of diesel has no noticeable benefits - in anything.
There are of course badly designed engines in which it would make a difference. I include GM in that category...and Rover.
PS I saw the C5 test of petrol additives. Most appeared to contain methanol. IIRC Methanol requires more oxygen and a higher fuel flow as the energy/litre is lower than petrol. No wonder most test showed a 2% power loss as the poor fuel injection system would fuel it as petrol... So a complete waste of money...Methanol also does nasty things to seals iirc as it is aggressive..
(model engines anyone?)

Can anyone tell me where the oil drain bolt is on a suzuki bandit 650.......there is a hex bolt on the left hand side of the engine and another normal bolt 14mm I think at the very bottom of the engine /sump. Read more

I was looking at a North East dealer website for a Subaru outback with Reg BL55 *** for £17.995 when I noticed that the picture was taken when it was SNOWING !!!!
Given that it probably has not snowed since Feb it beggars belief that they have either

As there seems to be 3-4% error on my '06 Outback 2.5 speedometer, increasing profile by 5 might reduce the error without illegally underreading.
I have a 1991 VW Passat which just failed its ITV (MOT here in Spain) because of low reading for rear left brake and handbrake. The brake drum seems fine although a bit pitted (meaning maybe it hasn't been functioning properly for a while). The brake shoes are only slightly worn. I haven't found any dust, debris or other contaminants. The only sign of possible problem is with the round brass inserts that the shoes rest on which are found on the back plate. The ones towards the top appear to have been slotted by wear from the brake shoes. Could this be my problem?
Does anybody out there have any ideas or suggestions. I'm looking for a solution that I can do myself without blowing the bank on new parts. I also need help as soon as possible.
Cheers

These are twin piration slaves and you should be able to move the shoes across sie to side to both pistons are moving. Clean the auto adjusters and blow out any dust, mask required. Regards Peter
As per radio news today, soon lighting cig while driving will be an offence just like using mobile phone while driving.
It also said that govt. is also considering whether to ban smoking altogether while driving.
It has been updated in new Highway Code.

"disproportionate amount of anti smokers "
Only because the 'antis' are always more vocal. Hence the term 'silent majority'.
I think this another example of the law of unintended consequences - cars are practically the last indoor refuge for the smoker, everywhere else having been made unavailable. Having been a very occasional pipe smoker, I must admit that I'm inclined to use it more just to make a point!
I have just come to the end of 4 months of chemotherapy (thankfully with very promising results) but the following question occurs: the (oral) drugs in question are effective but severe, leading to anaemia, and thereby, to considerable fatigue (until corrected by transfusions which I have had regularly).
At such 'fatigue' times I have always used my judgement as to when I'm OK to drive, or not.
But is this enough? Is the mere fact of being on drugs which could have this effect, enough to make me culpable under the law, if I drive? Obviously an over-the-alcohol-limit driver has NO discretion to make the judgement "I'm OK to drive". Is there a difference?

"Environmental campaigners are always pointing out the mileage that our produce travels. Perhaps a significant increase in transport costs will see consumers buying more local produce."
Oh yeah! All the stuff I buy can be bought locally? Are you really suggesting that we spend most of our money on "local produce"? I live in a rural area - the fields are full of oil seed rape, beans, and cereal crops (not a lot of cows, sheep or pigs). The shoe factories have closed, so have the hosiery factories - I would love to see a label on anything saying "Made in Leicestershire". I rely, not through choice, reliant on products brought to me by trucks, trains, ships - I have no choice.
My biggest recent purchase was a new bathroom suite. I went to the local farmers' market, but they did not have one. Just think what you have bought recently and tell me how much is "local produce"
This tax increase is just a way of Gov raising more money - the tax will not be spent on reducing "climate change", it will have no impact on conserving scarce resources since to most people their journeys are "essential" - you may not agree, but they are "essential" to the person concerned.
Interesting article in the Telegraph today about how gov wastes money. An extract:-
"The extravagance of Mr Brown is further exposed in the annual Bumper Book of Government Waste published this week by the Taxpayers' Alliance.
It estimates that of the £587 billion spent by the state last year, £101 billion was wasted, enough to cut the tax burden of every household by over £4,000 a year.
It includes in this the £65 million fine from the EU for the farm payments fiasco, £36 million for road building overruns, £380 million for written-off tax credit overpayments, £1.4 billion on unnecessary consultants, £1.6 billion on failed IT schemes, £5 billion increase in public administration since 1997. The list goes on and on.
The European Central Bank found that if public spending were as efficient as that of the US, or Japan, the Government could spend 16 per cent less, while still producing the same level of public services.
The Government will no doubt dispute many of the TPA's calculations; but even if they are only a quarter true, this is dissipation on an epic scale.
Now Mr Brown proposes to spend £100 million of your money and mine on an election that is not needed. How generous of us."

Motorists/road transport is an easy target because most of us, and the transport companies have no choice. We just go out and pay more and more. We have to.

Do keep an eye on the coolant and tempreture on these,if you get the slightest inkling it may be running too hot investigate it immediately as they do crack heads, at this mileage I would even change the radiator if you suspect it is the original and check all the coolant pipes in fact if it has anything to do with the cooling system check it, twice ! every other day !. We spent in the region of £3000 trying to fix ours including a re-con engine which lasted about 6000 miles before we scrapped the whole car.
