I notice in another thread one or two posters complaining that their wives apply steering lock while the car is stationary. Unless they are exceptionally mean and fear that it is costing them 0.002p's worth of rubber every time it happens, why do people care about this?

Certainly it tends to be drilled into learner drivers. But I strongly suspect that the reason is driving schools fear the damage that will be caused when learners do this while the n/s front wheel is graunched tight against a high kerb. Otherwise it has to be irrational, since clutch abuse is winked at by driving instructors.

I seldom get to drive my car without having to apply steering lock while it is stationary. Very tight parking slots are often the only ones available in London. Is it really the case that other people live in some spacious fantasy world where miraculously convenient lengths of unrestricted kerb are always present where they want to stop, as they are in nearly all Hollywood movies, even good ones?

I still think that the fact that it causes the surface of tarmac to be
scrubbed off indicates the abnormally high load that it transmits through the steering linkages.

We have an 18 tonne (little 'un) truck at work that broke the concrete where the driver has to turn his front wheels to get it parked. The steering is fine. The concrete has been dug out and replaced with reinforced...

Hi all, i have a mk 4 fiesta and when im stationary my car revs with my foot off the accelerator. whether im in gear or neutral, recently it has gotten worse and the only way to stop it revving is to turn it off! when i come to a stop at a junction or lights the car can just cut out and further to this when i leave the car running the revs fluctuate as if the car is going to stall then revs climb... i have heard this could be the idle speed control valve and many ppl have the same problem but has anyone any advice? Mapmaker - tend to agree with you on all points.
See my earlier post for comments on your login. Also tend to agree with your comment that it would be even more readable at a slightly narrower width of 6" or so.

Hi,
MkIV Golf I have been driving for a while has had the ESP & Engine Management lights come on suddenly. The engine starts up a bit odd - the engine revs go up & down from about 500-1000, and can cut out when it drops below 500. But, once warmed up it's fine, although the fuel consumption seems to have gone up a bit.

It's the 8v engine, has about 100k on the clock. Odd thing it had the same fault (engine management light on) last year and the local Skoda garage replaced a faulty Lambda probe.... any ideas anyone where I should look - I suspect if I take it into most garages they will just start replacing the other Lambda probes but this sounds like there may be a fault somewhere else... I had "esp "," abs and "engine workshop now" coming up on my Passat , which turned out to be the brake switch , you can tell if its this by checking if your brake lights come on. The fault code check showed an intermittent on the brake switch.

Anyone advise on some probs with a 2000 corsa 1.7d.

Starts fine but when revved stalls, hard to start after that. It did also struggle "under load" ,was in 5th gear and it wouldn't pull dipped clutch to change down and engine stalled, hard to start again.

Any help much appreciated.

I forgot to say, the 2 litre is ok, too, if not as lively.
My 2.2 Vtec has the autobox with sequential shift and I like it very much, though I have taken note of comments that it isn't very strong and it's a good idea to keep the fluid clean.
If you fancy the 3-litre Accord coupe I can only say I would be tempted too - drove one a few years ago and was very taken with it, nearly as good as my old Legend coupe. They are like hens' teeth here in France, though.

I get a lot of unsolicited email everyday, something which I find quite annoying as none of it is use, and while the sender might think it hugely important, I never do.

So I was really not impressed to receive an unsolicited email promoting this site, which has been sent to me as I am a member here. The terms of the site don't state that I will be sent advertising emails when I sign up, so it is definitely unsolicited spam mail.

I know it's only one email, but it's on that basis that I get 55 useless emails per day.

Not good. Read more

LOCKED.

As others have said, it's one email. Get over it.

For all those complaining, I suggest you enrol as tutors at your nearest college for the "How to be Victor Meldrew" course. I'm sure all potential pupils will get a grade A pass ;o)

I drive a VW Golf Mk III that was previously failing to change gears and the fault code reader showed, that the Solenoid Valve N90,was short circuiting. I took it to my mechanic who repaired it. After the repair the car started changing gears, but is rough in changing from one gear to another,it practically jerks. My mechanic says that the short in the solenoid valve had also shorted the ECU and it now needs replacement. Any second opinions and if not,can my ECU be repaired? Read more

According to US Reports:-

Renault said it plans further measures to improve working conditions at its engineering facilities after three employee suicides in the last year that led to a probe by the public prosecutor's office.

Among the measures are monitored limits on working hours, 'efficient meetings held at reasonable times', mandatory lunch breaks and a ban on working at home.

As a comparison Peugeot had 6 deaths by suicide in 12 mths..

Is this a factor of the motor industry or would this be across industry in general?
What about the public sector? Would this sort of figure apply?
