I have a 1992 Citroen BX19TXD automatic. The suspension has suffered a number of leaks and pipes have been replaced by the main dealer over a period of months On the last occasion they could not get the front and back suspension to work together as self levelling. Either the front remained static while the back rose and fell or the front rose and fell while the back remained static. It was left with the front static and the rear operating normally but at the correct road height.

The car behaved reasonably well for about two months but then the suspension became solid. The rear suspension jolts violently all the time - there is no suspension by the feel of it. The impression is that the system is not working but, when static, the suspension responds to the movement of the height adjustment lever. The front suspension responds in jerks whereas the rear moves smoothly.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is and, if so, the solution?

Just reading through the latest PlayJag magazine and came across an interesting entry.

A new operation has been launched in the UK to provide short-term comprehensive car and van insurance for periods between 1 and 28 days. All documentation is emailed directly to the customer for immediate printout. Policies are underwritten by Norwich Union. There's also an option to include roadside assistance.

I've just done one of their "Quick Quotes" and they came up with £12.60 for 1 day and £46.20 for 7 days to insure my XJ8.

PS. Usual disclaimers apply including "No personal connection".

PPS. HJ, considering the number of questions that appear in the BR about short-term insurance - maybe they'd be a candidate for site advertising or a DT mention. Read more

A question asked by a mate.

Anyone know if the 307 2.0HDi 110 has an Intercooler system and if so, could be it fitted to the 2.0HDi 90 version.

I only knew of it through the dealers that I do jobs for. Peugeot may have dropped them now - they kept them pretty quiet.

Have been asked to have a look at a basic Nova 1.2 i
The car starts fine from cold (and hot) but during the warm up period there is a very noticeable misfire under acceleration - it's ok when stone cold or hot. The temp gauge barely moves off the blue bit even after an hours running, and the idling speed is erratic at all times - usually a bit to fast.
I intend replacing the thermostat, plugs and leads - but any info on sorting the idle speed would be a great help. TIA

Hi all, i gotta 1.4i 1991 nova, and once warm-hot, it misfires badly at low revs under load. i've renewed HT leads ,dizzy cap, rotor arm, and the plugs are only 2000 miles old...and a bit black when i took them out.

I have tried Redex, and no change....

it was supposed that the m1 would have 4 lane expansion between leicester and chesterfield , now the powers that be realise its a bit too expensive so they are planning on using the hard shoulder instead as an alternative , whats going on ? good idea or not? Read more

He passed to the left of the cars already on the dirt effectively creating a fifth lane.

And how do the accident rates in Thailand compare with those in the UK?

Hi folks, wondering if anyone might help me with this one. My brakes seem to be a bit temperamental: I have already replaced the vacuum pump with a quality second. If I want to stop suddenly, it seems that the pedal is going immediately down to a stopping point after which I seem to be using my bodyweight and strength to get the right level of braking, really having to tread on it hard sometimes. Gradual braking from speed seems to be fine, but sudden braking at slow speeds requires quite some effort. Someone I know who seems to know a lot about such things said that if the servo had gone, I would have heard some hissing, but I can't hear any noises out of the ordinary. Any clues??

Cheers

I would advise getting down to Kwikfit or someone and ask them to check the braking system through, its too important to mess with, you could try this or try that, but if in the meantime you splatter a child, your life, and others, will be ruined. Drive carefully.

This topic comes up quite often.

Anyway, I was short of some 5W-30 Long Life oil today and in a bit of a rush for it. Being a bit cheeky I nipped down to my mates garage with an empty 5L can. He has a big drum (205 litre I think) of Fuchs 5W-30 LL and I filled my can up. I asked him how much the drum cost and it was 'about £180' from the local Vauxhall dealer (Trade Club) where I normally get my oil (but I get mine in the small drums). So that's under £1/Litre - something to think about when the BMW dealer is charging it out to you at £12+ a litre!
As an aside, I can confirm that most of the 'Vauxhall/GM' oils are actually Fuchs - so try your local GM dealer when you next need oil. You won't get it at £1/Litre, but it will still be cheaper than most factors and its a good quality oil. Read more

I read in a post yesterday or so that renewing your car's RFL online is a very painless option.

I've just done it, and it is. Read more

If you don't leave it to the last minute
queues are minimal

I've found that the queues are the same at my post office whether I leave it until the last minute or go in the middle of the month....... ;-)

Son's 'student car' with coat hanger aerial accessory etc - starts OKish, runs OKish at high revs but on depressing accelerator get 'die off' (partic at lower revs and going up incline)which slowly picks up again and then seems to run OK. Checked Ignition side of things (but no expert) - plugs new and gapped OK, batt. OK, coil gives correct resistances, diz cap looks OK (I think), leads seem OK too. Was serviced recently with new fuel filter, air filter, plugs, valve adjustment, oil change. Seemed better for a while now back to square 1. Son says better in the wet. Redex in tank and direct into carb. - no difference.
I presume it's a fuel side problem? Likely culprits?

Cheers for any help

Just checking my own and a friend's previous car registrations on the DVLA site to see if they are still Taxed (ie on the road) and was surprised to see cars that we thought were only months away from the scrappie when we traded them in, are still going.
An R reg 106 with 120K (in 2004) traded-in in 2004, still going, even though it sounded terminal back then.
A D reg 205 traded in during 1994 with 115K on the clock, only hit the scrappie last year.
There must be far more people willing to fling time and/or money at these old cars to keep them going than I first thought. I thought Cars were considered disposable once repair costs became greater than Car's sale value. Read more
