I was flashed by a Gatso on 30th July 2007 in a temporary 40 limit (roadworks) and have not yet received a NIP. What is the time limit (if any) for being served with an NIP?
The Gatso has since been destroyed by a fire, but this was at least a week (and possibly longer) after I was flashed!
I did notice that there was only one flash.......does this indicate anything? Read more
Hallo,
did anybody hear of problems with the airbag warning light ( passenger seat) of a Jaguar xj 6?
(The light goes on despite the fact that the passenger is well protected by a seat belt and up to 50 cm off the dashboard)
Chip/ computer problems?
Since 3 years my dealer is not able to fix that problem.

Yes we have the same. Wifey is five foot one & petite and we get this problem in an x-type. Quite annoying really.
Jaguar say the trigger weight for the "child recognition" feature is set at 40kg (she isn't THAT petite!) but that if she sits with the seat set back or is short the car might get confused. Net result is half the time the airbag is armed and half the time it isn't.
What an utterly pointless, and potential dangerous "safety" feature. Surely people with small children should be expected to exercise a bit of common sense and put their kids in the back rather than adults risk injury because the airbag fails to go off?
(Not to mention that fact that driving with a warning light on is an irritation)
Something's happened that's never happened to me before in all my years of looking after cars.
I waxed the car this morning with Autoglym High Gloss. I could tell it wasn't going to rain for a couple of hours, so I'd have plenty of time to polish it off. Unfortunately, I'd foolishly neglected to take into account the fact that while waiting for the wax to dry I was about to make a very deep two-inch gash in my hand with a Stanley knife. Two hours at casualty and I returned to a car covered in rain.
What do I do now? Will it be OK to let it dry then polish it. Shoudl I wash the residue off?
Anyone been there and done that (not the Stanley knife bit)?

4 stitches on palm of hand, installing a boot rack on the Barchetta. Caught a flake of chrome trim, and cut the skin like a razor.
Not my finest moment.
I am considering a nissan Pathfinder Auto 2.5dci, does anyone have experience of the reliability of engine or gearbox or any particular pitfalls with them please as I would like to use one for towing. The New model X-trail would of been ideal but power is reduced for the auto model!

Thank you all for your input, that has made interesting reading & landcrusier was one I hadn't thought of. I have to say i think your comments are spot on.
I know its only £15, but paid a particular website ( don't think I can name) who promises to have ads loaded onto many others including Fish4, FridayAd Carsource, cardata
Can't find ad on any of these - only their own site and a few "minor ones" which I can't believe people would look at anyway
No response to email - anyone had a refund from this type of firm?
No don't name it ! - Slight tweak to subject line - PU Read more
I think you'll just have to kiss goodbye to £15. Trading Standards may be interested but otherwise not much else you can do.
Hi all, 2.0L 16v auto, 120k
cleaned my idle valve recently, due to it cutting-out. I took the opportunity to also clean the throttle housing fully and checked all hoses etc. I have the oil separator mod. fitted and it's ok too. I've read loadsa posts about it recently.
Now after the clean, it doesn't cut-out, but it holds revs at 1200-1500 approaching traffic lights and if I put it in neutral, it swings between 1500 and 2500 rpm. There's no EMS problem, as the light only comes-on during ignition/startup. I thought if there's a problem with cam/crank sensors, my EMS light would come on.
Any ideas?

hunting normally caused by air leak!. no harm in trying throttle stop back 1/4 turn or even half & see how it responds or when the revs are still high try tapping idle valve, if it drops back you know its a lazy valve!

I need to replace two front tyres on my trusty M reg 306 Pug. have been quoted £42 each (inc fitting) for Conti premium contacts. Any one had any experience/opinions on this tyre, or would I be better of with budget tyres on a car of this age? Read more
I've heard so much utter rubbish from tyre fitters over the last few years I simply ignore everything they say, tell them exactly what to fit, and let them get on with it.
'No mate I don't have any 265/35/18 Eagle F1's or Bridgestone Potenza S-03 but I've got some Marshalls which are just as good'
No, thanks very much.
Hi
Can the UK police / DVLA pursue speeding tickets from 'safety cameras' when they flash a car from another EU country?
Are they able to hold a driver until they pay a fine like the french if plod pulls them in person?
I am specifically thinking of a German reg car.

Hi
I have a bespoke system on my car which by-passes the manufacturer's headlight switch in order to resolve a full beam switching problem.
The problem I have is that after implementing the system I find the full beam switch becomes dirty very quickly and will not operate on first attempt. The switch is wired up at 5v to a high impedence microcontroller input with a 10k resistor to ground.
My question is what do I need to increase to resolve this problem? Do I increase voltage (i.e. back to 12v), current (i.e. to that it would have seen from a relay coil), or power (i.e. current change taking into account the 5v not 12v)?
Any suggestions welcome.

Mike, I'm assuming that the car maker's switch is controlling your microcontroller using a 5V supply with a 10k pull down resistor so the switch current is 0.5 mA.
Two things:
Don't control safety essential lights with a system containing so many elements and in your case, software. You are asking to be plunged into darkness at any time.
You are passing a contact "wetting" current of only 0.5 mA through a car dipswitch which is designed to handle (on cars without relays) several amperes. Car manufacturers are not charitable organisations and don't fit precious metal contacts - they rely on a good dose of current shifting the oxide build-up on the silver (if you're lucky) or brass (if of American origin) contacts. Your circuit will not shift the oxide deposits on the contacts.
For safety's sake, put it all back to OE spec (I'd hate to see an insurance investigation on your present setup) and buy a new dipswitch if you need one - although I suspect normal operating current will condition the contacts and restore normal operation.
659.
I'm a bit surprised at the number of Backroomers who admit to, or even sometimes seemingly brag about, customarily speeding. What satisfaction do they get out of their admissions?

Agree with all your points Ian, I think the problem here is there are a body of posters who mistake reportage for bragging. Probably some sort of issue for them rather than the rest of us well adjusted contributors.
Agreed the Golf GTi is slow, even remapped to 260bhp it's a bit sluggish. Nice round town run-around though.
