Went with friend tonight to look at a 96 Volvo 850 estate. Owner not sure if 10v or 20v. How does one tell the difference? Read more
I have a 4 cyl motorcycle, 4 carbs, each has a stub to connect to a vacuum balancer, three stubs are blanked off and one is connected to the fuel tap which is vacuum opperated. If the stubs were linked and in effect all were connected to the fuel tap would the vacuuum applied at the tap increase? I think not, the vacuum from all 4 carbs will be the same so will be absolute, rather like pressure and volume being independant.
Any thoughts ?

Agreed Aprilia, the analogy was taken too literally nevertheless is served to illustrate a point.
If buying a 3.5-year old used car, say for £8,000 from a dealer, it will likely have several months MOT on it.
But that not withstanding, is it logical to go and get another one at the cost of £50, on the basis that it is a cheap, albeit incomplete, form of inspection, safety check-up, and if there's anything wrong with it, you will quite likely get the dealer to pay for it.
Is this a sensible way thing to do? Read more
MoT regs can definitely get 'bent' a bit on a car sale - seen it myself more than once. A lot of MoT items are 'subjective'. The buyers does get protection though, in that if any MoT'able defects come to light in the first 30 days he can go to VOSA for an 'reverse appeal' and get the MoT voided and have a cast-iron case for money back.
What happens when Mercedes tell you that you need a new 'moon roof' at a cost of thousands?

Entertaining as it has been, we're wandering off topic :-)
I'm about to smarten up the 1275 engine that will replace the one in my wife's old 998 Mini. The clutch bellhousing is really tatty and looks all oxidised. What is the most effective way of smartening this up and other parts of similar type material such as the carb etc?
Thanks,

Hi Has anyone fitted bulb type fuel primer pump, as fitted to citreon etc. I am told that omega/vectra need dealer only pump to bleed pump after fiter change terry60 Read more
Terry, My 2.0 DTI 1998 vectra it doesnt need a pump after a filter change. However on its first filter change I didnt fill the filter housing with fuel and it took a lot of cranking over before it would start.
However on subsequent filter changes I have always filled it with diesel and it starts first touch as normal.
As you no doubt know there is no lift pump on these models so it relies on the injection pump to drag the diesel from the tank and it takes a long time.
Fill the housing to the brim with diesel and there is no problem.

I have put a deposit of £1000 on a brand new car from a big garage, (not back street) this was 2 days ago.
I have had a rethink due to some bad news I have received the day after.
Does anybody know my position regarding asking for my deposit back.
I never test drove the car at this garage and carried out all transactions over the telephone. (just wondering if distance selling regs apply)?
Any help much appreciated Read more
I never intended spouting the law to them, but just wanted to know how I stood, I did speak with consumer direct, they said that I am NOT covered by distance selling as I visited the dealer with my part ex, however the dealer does have to justify if they are to keep hold of any money.
Havel spoken to the sales manager, who said he has to get his head round it and they apparently get fined from the manufacturer if they just cancel an order.
Waiting back to hear from him
Anybody else with advice
Today my new Mitsubishi Colt CZC has been recalled back to the factory due to the failure of the driver window failing to go up after opening and closing the roof. Has anyone else had the same or similar problem? Read more
Thank you for that..... actually my local dealership has sold 7, mind you not seen them on the road yet. Other than the problem it is not a bad vehicle for the money. Was enjoying it till it went wrong.

Many thanks for that info.
Just spoken to someone who's had the horror of trying to navigate the 30 miles from Leeds to Rochdale - it took him nearly 3 hours and apparently the traffic is backing up and getting worse. Don't bother if your journey takes in junctions 26 - 22. Due to a lorry fire and a broken down transporter.
Thought you'd like to know if you're in the Leeds / Huddersfield area and using that stretch of motorway this evening. Read more
">Yep - never mind the farmer !<"
Correct, they've had enough subsidies out of me over the years. And now that the U-boat threat has finally receded, we can rely on imported food. The most important function of farmland is to act as a receptacle for wrecks that are bulldozed off roads that I am trying to use.
In fact, when I'm in charge, farmers will not be allowed to drive agricultural machinery on Liz's road whatsoever. They can use forks and hoes instead.

From the VIN plate you can deduce the engine code, and from the engine code you can deduce the number of valves; for example B5254S means benzine (petrol), 5 cylinders, 2.5 litre, four valves per cylinder (so 20 valves in all), normally aspirated. B5252S means as just written but 2 valves per cylinder, so 10 valve in all. A "T" at the end means turbocharged. Even if the engine has been swapped, then so long as you find the engine type written on it you can deduce the number of valves from this information.
