I have the above car and have a problem with the clutch. The pedal went to the floor clutch cable and stayed there, and cant drive it as I can't put it in gear, if it was a Ford it would be the clutch cable but a Citroen! Who knows?

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Is it OK to drive car registered in my husband's name in France. I have insurance documents in my name. We are divorcing and he says I cannot take my car abroad which was originally registered by him when we bought it 4 years ago. He says he can report me to the police. Meg Read more

Well I have some well intentioned advice, based on facts that are similar to your circumstances.

I have a company car, leased, these are the rules so this is probably pertinant to your case as well.

To take a car abroad you have to have a valid registration document in your name, or a letter of approval from the registered keeper. If you have neither a: your insurance could be invalid, and/or b: you may be asked to produce the V5 or letter when in France.

b: has never happened to me in mainland europe.

So, to put a twist on the "10 car dream garage" let me ask.....

What would your dream garage be.... but.... all the cars must be from the same manufacturer and have different characteristics... suit different types of driving... but all have the same badge.

We might have to ignore the manufacturers of exotica and supercars, in order to get a good range of cars.

Obviously, we need a 2 seat sports car, a large motorway saloon, a town car, a 4x4 and a people carrier and a classic car for special days, so I'll start the ball rolling with Mercedes.

1. SLK. I'll not be greedy, the 230 Kompressor is fast enough. I want to keep my licence, and I prefer the roof open on sunny days.
2. S class. Diesel for economy and less fuel stops. Maybe a driver to go with it.
3. A second hand A160. Nice high driving position, easy to park in the smallest space, and second hand to I won't cry over car park knocks and dings.
4. ML55AMG. 'nuff said.
5. V class. Loads of space for people or furniture.
6. Gotta be a "gullwing" but I'd settle for a "Dallas" era white SL like Sue Ellen's.

So... what's your dream manufacturer... and the car models... Read more

On Thursday evening I went to the bike meet at Hunters Lodge Inn on the A303 near Wincanton, must have been 400 bikes there, unusual ones too including a Boss Hoss:

Hi folks, the legend of the courier 405 continues....
the ol' girl has developed a most interesting problem! As you drive at night, the lights and dashlights get dimmer and dimmer until they can't be seen, as they get very dim, the airbag warning light on the steering wheel comes on. About now you roll onto the hard shoulder, suspecting a flat battery caused by an alternator problem, but the horn and the indicators are fine; you switch the lights off but not the engine and after about a minute the 'no charge' light comes on on the dashboard if you depress the wellie pedal now, the charge light goes out, as does the airbag light, and all is fine, everything works for about 50 miles until it all starts again. The car is a 94 non turbo 1.9 estate and I had modified the silly battery connections and cleaned and vaselined all the connections to battery, starter motor and alternator etc. Any ideas would be most welcome! Thanks in advance.

The lights get dimmer because the drain is more than likly bigger than the charge, you need to check battery voltage with a voltmeter with the lights on & off!. The horn & indicators require less current than the head lights hence they still work, It may be worth checking earth straps for engine & headlamp earths.
If the earths are all sound then suspect alternator problem! you should have 13.8-14.2 volts running at the battery with & without elecs on. If it drops below 13 with lights on you have a nackered alternator or slack belt or bad connection

An "expert" is urging the adoption of psychometric assessment as part of the driving test. He says we need to get beyond hand/eye coordination and deal with drivers' attitudes. We need to be able to correct unacceptable levels of risk-taking, giving as examples jumping red lights and speeding.

Another example of Orwellian tendencies?

Before rushing to judgment, bear in mind that drivers for Arriva apparently have beend subject to such assessment for some time and it is claimed that it has reduced the 50% chance that their new drivers will be involved in a collision. Read more

Where are all the IAM folk these days? I remember in the 70's their rear window stickers and grille badges were a common sight. Still see them around today but far less regularly.

Has the membership dwindled?

As a relatively new IAM member (well 3 years now ;) ) the training on how to set the car up for bends to stay balanced through it was one of the most useful pieces of learning. Separating gear change and braking, though tricky for me while unlearning BGO, not only gives me more control of the car around bends but makes the whole experience more comfortable for passengers who don't get thrown around due to the forces on the car fighting with each other.

Mind you, on a fun day course at Silverstone, I was then the one who on the high speed brake and steer bit (ABS demo) forgot to touch the clutch at all lol - the electronic gearbox just shouted surrender and sulked for a few minutes before returning to normal ;)

Driving is more fun since the IAM test - the examiner (ex-Police) talked about how much he enjoys cross country runs, challenging himself to drive as far as possible without use of the brake, unless the unexpected arises.

ps I'm not old, though my 9 year old lad would disagree, and I don't wear the gloves or hat, though I do enjoy driving the Rover, as well as an E30 325i :)

Have had a problem with water ingress in the back passenger side footwell for the past year or so. In March I took it to my local VW dealer who diagnosed the probelm as being faulty seal for the backlights (not standard VW issue). This was fixed and I thought that was the end until the recent heavy rains when I found parts of my car heavily water logged and remaining rainwater dripping through the mainframe. I spoke with VW who confirmed it would be a £94 fee for them to look at it to diagnose.

Can anyone help? I don't want to waste anymore money at VW as it seems that whatever checks they are doing are not through enough and I can't risk paying out more money for what now seems like temporary repairs.

Thanks. Read more

My FIL's A6 was wet in the rear footwell and that turned out to be a blocked scuttle (where the heater air intake is) drain. Very common A6 problem (the drain is under the battery).

The water was running under the carpet in the front and only showing itself in the back. It wrecked his auto-box ECU which is under the front passenger seat.

Hi all!

I recently bought a 1996 fiesta, a nice little car. Unfortunately for me, its engine packed in the very next day (Seriously!). Now the guy in my local garage says that i have to put an engine from a car which is exactly the same as my one.

Is there anyone out there who can help me find an engine? Read more

i've become very attached to it as it is my first car, even though ive only done about 500 miles in it in the 7 months that i have had the car (coz its been sitting in the garage most of the time). I am quite adamant on fixing it otherwise i will be forced to buy a nissan micra (horror!). It has to have a zetec s engine.
