Ali component cleaning...any tips?? - stuartl
I'm about to smarten up the 1275 engine that will replace the one in my wife's old 998 Mini. The clutch bellhousing is really tatty and looks all oxidised. What is the most effective way of smartening this up and other parts of similar type material such as the carb etc?

Thanks,

Stuart

I always used to leave carbs soaking in Decosol solution.

I have used what we locals call "red mist" it is sold as traffic film remover and is diluted way down (ISTR something like 20 to 1 or more). There are warning about use on Ali, but only if it is left on for far too long. Used in an old washing up liquid spray bottle and maybe with a stiff brush to dislodge thick claggy stuff. Spray it on, brush it around and leave for 5 to 10 minutes and hose it off. Wonderous.

I understand it is no longer red in colour, my 5ltr concentrated must be at least 5 years old now as the dilution level makes it almost everlasting. www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/search/filter/050430010...1

I've found dishwashers work quite well on ALi, make sure SWMBO doesn't catch you because otherwise you'll be sleeping in the garage with it.

i give my ali bits a good clean up with a degreaser and a wire brush then use a acid wheel cleaner(wonder wheels for example) the acid bites into the surface and freshens it up somehwat

if you can find a valeter to give you some trade strong stuff then use that...it wont eat any gaskets or rubbers etc, just keep it off nice paint best you can , then rinse with a hose and repeat as req
