I have just bought a Megane 97 (r) and sometimes when i am driving it there is a warning light what comes on. It looks like a box with a heart beat line running through it, i think it may have something to do with the electric/alternator... Am i right in thinking this or has anyone got the correct answer for my guess.
Thanks for all help in advance... Read more
Right, now its not been that long since I asked for advice as to what to buy to replace my Terracan, but with the recent bad weather I'm starting to regret changing from a 4x4 to a Vectra. So, am probably going to be back in the market for a 4x4 either to use as my car, or as a second car to take when the weather is bad or I need to visit a site.
Budget - hmm, main car: upto £15K ish, second car: upto £7.5/8K
So, my options:-
Hyundai Terracan - had one, liked it. Will go anywhere, fairly cheap to run and warranty still valid for a couple of years at least. However, only 25-28mpg average (the lower figure on motorway runs)
Jeep Patriot - bit smaller than the Terra. However is trail rated. Can wade at the same depth as the Terracan (we have a Ford just up the road from us). Good fuel economy though, at 42.2mpg
Jeep Commander - If it drops in price a little
Isuzu Trooper - again a fullsize 4x4. This would be as a seocnd car. The 3.0DT. Don't know much about them though
Mitsubishi Shogun
Mercedes ML
Then there are the obvious pickups - Hilux, L200, Navara, etc...
I know that some of these vehicles are very different! But anyone elses thoughts much appreciated!
The conditions where we live (South Shropshire/Worcestershire border) can obviously vary, but in general: Deep Water, Deep Snow, Fairly thick mud, Fords, steep hills.
Come on then, lets have some comments.....

Skoda Octavia 4x4 Estate.
Loads of load space.
All wheel drive only kicks in when required.
50mm extra ground clearance than the regular estate.
102PS diesel engine, easily chipped to 130PS.
Get a set of winter tyres on steel wheels for the Arctic conditions that Shropshire apparently suffers from ;-)
Thinking of purchasing the above vehicle with TDI engine circa 2000 to 2001 year, and would appreciate receving present and past owners views on the above vehile
What Bora TDI models had with 6 speed gear boxs?
I know there were a couple of versions of the TDI engine iirc 90,110,115,130,150, is it easy to correctly identify what BHP a Bora has.
Appolgogies for the bad phrasing of the questions but it is late, well thats my excuse

My November 1999 Bora (2000 MY spec) still looks like a brand new vehicle. Wouldn't part with it for those sort of figures.

I have a 1998 Rover 600 2 litre turbo diesel which has done 62000 miles.Lately, when I'm on a long run, the engine management warning light has been coming on but goes out when I take my foot off the accelerator pedal.I found that lifting my foot off the pedal for a second will turn off the light so I do it immediately the light comes on.Usually this works first time but sometimes I have to repeat it a few times.
At the same time the engine can become noisier with a sound similar to noisy tappets and there is a slight loss of power which is more noticeable if I'm in a lower gear, say driving up a hill.Dropping down a gear or two sometime helps to turn off the warning light and as soon as the light is out the engine gets back to normal with no further problems for perhaps 50 miles or more. Could this be the turbocharger on the way out? Read more

Some of you may recall that I had the rear bumper of my Outback replaced after I bumped it a few weeks ago. On collecting the car, both ABS and Traction Control warning lights remained lit. The car was meant to go in to have this sorted; until today.....
I was stopped by white van man who advised that both my rear stop lights were not working. To cut a long story short (its not easy changing the rear lights on an Outback), I replaced both bulbs and hey presto! - the ABS and TC lights now go out as intended!
Strange and isn't it amazing that it took over a week for someone to tell me that I had both stop lights out. Read more
This type of visual warning might be on other cars. My Mitsubishi L200 had a rear light cluster damaged (killed all the bulbs) and when driving home on first braking the ABS light came on (ABS seemed to operate properly) until I had got home and turned the ignition off. I had replaced the offending bulb the next day, and no ABS light then or since. I assume when the brake light circuit shorted this was triggered as a warning.
Hi,
Can anyone advise me what would be best to use to remove some Autoglym super resin polish I accidently got on the plastic side rubbing strips (black) of my wife's car. It looks very unsightly.
Thanks.

Peanut butter.
Today, to try out my organsation's alleged green travel policy they keep pushing on us, I made a rare bus trip form my office and back to get to a meeting and couldn't wait to get back in my car for the journey home. The times were inconvenient, both ways the driver drove erratically uncomfortably (for example grinding the bottom of the bus on speed humps) and to top it all the fare was more expensive compared to parking locally - lesson learned methinks!

Just to throw my £2 in (inflation you see, used to be 2p I think...)
I live in a city that has been given government funding to investigate the use of congestion charging to encourage the use of PT.
Currently it would cost the wife and me £8 per day for bus travel, so maybe £35 a week if you get a pass. There is one bus in the morning, one late afternoon. Before I would even consider using this service it would have to be cheaper and run more frequently. Therefore before any congestion charge is brought in there must be a viable alternative. Unfortunately the local council is saying that money raised from the congestion charge will go to improve public transport.
NO, NO, NO!
Improve public trasnport first. Ye gods is it that difficult to work out?
Maybe for one day we all should do our weekly shopping by bus. Can you imagine the chaos!
Hi All
My Passat (PD) TDI ended up being covered by a wave from a rather inconsiderate 4x4 owner, the engine promptly stopped working and I ended up being towed to a garage yesterday. Kindly garage owner informed me that the engine was hydraulically locked and potentially an expensive job to put right for which I can claim on my insurance.
Imagine my shock when I was called this morning to say that the car started and has been run for a short distance. He's advised me to have the oil and filter changed pronto (as it's emulsified) and also the air filter. Given the nature of these VAG PD engines with their very fine engineering tolerances, I'm thinking of cancelling the insurance claim, getting it "clean" and chopping it in for something else asap. Is this reasonable or am I worrying too much. The car's done 160K miles and was basically sound before the incident.
Thoughts?
Cheers Read more
Thanks guys, advice appreciated!
Hadn't thought of the fuel filter and the transmission is a tiptronic box, would this require an oil change? The camblet was done 20K ago, again is it worth changing it at this stage (metal impellor type water pump fitted at last change)
Cheers
Not sure if anyone cares about this but there are some who doubted I would ever buy a sporty car. Well I just put down a deposit on a black P reg Boxster 2.5 (private sale)! Having looked it over inside & out, it didn't look much more than 3 years old which says a lot about the build quality. I know it's not the fastest or flashest car on the road, but it's a drivers car, easily fast enough for me, and I think it's one of the most beautiful cars of the last 10 years. If anyone's interested I'll post a small report about my first drive of it after getting hold of it next week... very excited now - just got to buy a set of the clear facelift lights now! Read more
Roly: Lovely build quality? I don't think so! Still, it's a great drive. OP: Enjoy it!
Boxsterboy: 993 - a real Porsche with reasonably decent build quality, although watch for rust around the base of the front and rear screens, inside the wheelarches and at the bottom of the doors. The door checkstraps are weak too. Very sensitive to suspension set-up/alignment. Mechanically very robust... but these cars ar egetting old now. (I also guess you've done your homework.)
I loved mine - had a few nice mods - but it needed more TLC than a modern car!

djfire,
Seem as your driving a '97 I was talking about the coil packs (two black boxes from the plug leads) but if you have the pencil coils you should replace with new ones.
