VW Bora - Car
Thinking of purchasing the above vehicle with TDI engine circa 2000 to 2001 year, and would appreciate receving present and past owners views on the above vehile

What Bora TDI models had with 6 speed gear boxs?

I know there were a couple of versions of the TDI engine iirc 90,110,115,130,150, is it easy to correctly identify what BHP a Bora has.

Appolgogies for the bad phrasing of the questions but it is late, well thats my excuse

On a car of that vintage the 6 speed gearbox was in the 130 and 150. The 115 was usually 6 speed although there are a few imports with 5 speed boxes.

The easiest way to tell how much power the vehicle has is look for the factory build sticker which should be located in the boot, under the carpet where the spare is located. This will have a value expressed in KW for the power output of the car. You will need to find out the appropriate value for the BHP variations you mentioned above. If the sticker isn't there then most likely the car has had some sort of work done on it (perhaps after an accident) and is best avoided.

There are some extremely high spec Bora 150's out there and while not that great to drive the engine is powerful enough and economical. I think they are great value.

Don't know much about how to identify them, but I can tell you I had a 51 plate Bora TDi 130 with a 6 speed box and whilst maybe not the most exciting car I have ever had, was certainly one of the nicest. More than adequately quick, very economical and IMHO not bad looking either. HUGE boot. It was my 2nd Bora, first was a 2 litre petrol 115 in which I travelled around Norway, which convinced me to get a diesel!! Since then have only had one petrol car, a TT.

I don't know quite how Bora specs work, but there is the usual SE, Sport etc. trim. There was, IIRC, one called the ST which was a 150bhp special edition.

Car, there´s also the very similar Seat Toledo to consider - same chassis, same huge boot, well liked by owners, and possibly even cheaper (although Bora prices don´t generally hold up as well as Golfs anyway).
Apologies if you knew of it already.

I don't think you'll find a 150 of that age - seem to remember that appeared in late 2002 or 2003. I drove a Bora 130 for a day in spring 2002 when it was the nearest demonstrator a dealer could offer to the Golf estate I was considering. I liked it - but then I always liked the Mk4 Golf family more than is now fashionable - and thought it a much nicer car than the Passat Sport with the equivalent engine.

I've tried quite a few VAG diesels and the 130 strikes me as the best balance of oomph to refinement. It's plenty fast enough for me - and for a more petrol-headed colleague at the time, who chose one as his company car - but still quiet and civilized (although it seemed much rougher in the Passat.)

I didn't choose one for reasons that may be peculiar to me: the driver's seat backrest is too short for me, so I couldn't quite get comfortable; the back seat would have been a squeeze for the bulky baby seats we were travelling with at the time; and the radio has no Long Wave setting, which means no Test Match Special - which means no deal! (Skoda and Audi fit LW radios; why not VW?)
Oh, and the one I borrowed was silver. I left it outside Asda at High Wycombe, came out 20 minutes later and couldn't find it - like looking for a piece of hay in a haystack!

Oh, and the 130 has a TDI badge with 'D' and 'I' in red. The 150's badge is all red. I think the old 110/115 models had just the 'I' in red.

You cannot use the badging as a guide. It varied from year to year and dealers were known to provide whatever colour you requested.

A better way is the sticker in the boot or take the chassis number and give VW customer services a ring and they'll identify it for you.

I have had a 2004 Bora Highline 130TDI for just 2 years now, metallic black with leather interior.I have found it to be a very good family car and I prefer the looks over the mk4 golf.It has a good blend of performance and economy, giving me an overall mpg of 57,achieved on a touring holiday with mixed roads. This was measured tank to tank and not from the computer. The boot is huge and that I like.Build and material quality is excellent.

As has been said,it is not the best handling car on the market but the trade off is a very comfortable ride which given the state of this nations roads, is something of a blessing.

I think the 130 is just about right and find the way this thing just pulls from low speed is terrific and overtaking is just so easy without the need for changing down, due to the engine flexibility.

Ignore what the diesel haters regurgitate and try one for yourself, you may be surprised.

If it has a 6 speed box then it will have a PD engine, either 115 or 130 for the year you're taliking about.

The 5 speeds were'nt imports, the car was ready before the 6 speed and so VAG detuned the 115 (reduced the torque as the 5 speed could'nt take it) and fitted the 5 speed.

To enjoy the car full get it remapped

>>The boot is huge......Build and material quality is excellent.>>

I have a Bora with the 1.6 petrol engine and endorse the above comments.

Even so the size of the Bora's boot comes nowhere near that of my previous two Jettas (23cu ft)...:-)

Thanks for all thr replies sent so far.

In a private deal what would be a reasonable price for a 2000 W 115 TDI with 112,000 miles, in good condition

Cheers

£4.5 - £5 would be my guess for a full history car in a good colour.

I was looking at Seat Toledo V5s the other day on ebay and they fetch peanuts, they may be a good alternative if your annual milage is low

My November 1999 Bora (2000 MY spec) still looks like a brand new vehicle. Wouldn't part with it for those sort of figures.
