Some of you may recall that I had the rear bumper of my Outback replaced after I bumped it a few weeks ago. On collecting the car, both ABS and Traction Control warning lights remained lit. The car was meant to go in to have this sorted; until today.....
I was stopped by white van man who advised that both my rear stop lights were not working. To cut a long story short (its not easy changing the rear lights on an Outback), I replaced both bulbs and hey presto! - the ABS and TC lights now go out as intended!
Strange and isn't it amazing that it took over a week for someone to tell me that I had both stop lights out.

Not really that weird, I told a bloke stopped at traffic lights that his rear tail light was defective on his rather nice looking DB7 and he replied 'want to make something of it' and proceeded to tell me that I was of indeterminate parentage. I don't bother any more.

I've also told people and had the response ' yes I know'!

Ditto daveyjp's comments. I've also had people tell me "so what, the MOT isn't due yet"
That aside, if both brake light bulbs fail on Vauxhall Cavaliers the ABS light will come on. Not sure if the same applies to current Vauxhalls.

Bulb symbol appears in auxiliary warning panel when you start the engine
Bulb symbol goes out on first application of brakes if both brake lights are working
Bulb symbol stays on if one or both brake lights are not working.
Brilliant, simple, effective, and here nearly 20 years ago.
Cheers

I had a w reg (1980 version) volvo 240 with brake light failure warning lamp on the dash. Ended up being on permanently after I fitted a high level third brake light taking the feed from one side.

Same system in the 95 on Vectra, one major flaw, if the brake light switch failed the lights did not work and the warning system did not know because it operated on the basis of the switch being activated so gave the driver a false sense of security.

i totalled a montego into the back of a fiat 127 who had no working brake lights , its amazing how much time you "dont" have to brake when you have no warning from the car in front

I suppose there's a sporting chance nowadays that the car without working brake lights is being used by criminals waiting for the chance to claim off your insurance.

This type of visual warning might be on other cars. My Mitsubishi L200 had a rear light cluster damaged (killed all the bulbs) and when driving home on first braking the ABS light came on (ABS seemed to operate properly) until I had got home and turned the ignition off. I had replaced the offending bulb the next day, and no ABS light then or since. I assume when the brake light circuit shorted this was triggered as a warning.
