There's a missed opportunity!
I know it's been a very short production, but it had a 3.0 dCi unit available, right ? The one from Vel Satis I quess, matched up with a nice 5-speed autobox. Made by Isuzu ?
Any tips on reliability of that particular model, links etc. greatly appreciated.

I first saw an Avantime just after the launch, in the Renault Paris showroom and thought 'what is that all about?' I'm still wondering.
However - I am always amazed by the number I see around this part of rural France and I notice they are now beginning to be advertised in classic car magazines over here.
A few of us thought we would go to the British GP Friday practice. Some years ago you just turned up on the Friday but we decided to call as a precaution. First thing we noticed was that Siverstone has one of those money making '0870' numbers! Then we found you could only buy family tickets and extra ones for additional children, but none for additional adults. As a child is classified as 12 and under we would have been paying for 5 children that would not be there. A family ticket would have also been required for one adult. So we are not going! Rip off Britain again me thinks!!! Interested to know other people's thoughts. Read more

Hi
Just had some boot welding done on the Escort for the MoT - £25 which seemed cheap enough for the two small patches involved.
My question - is it common to underseal the work inside the boot? I did take all my rubbish and carpet out before, but should this be an invitation to go wild with the spray tin?
Took a good half hour with blue towel and white spirit to get it all off so I could put carpet back - horrible stuff.

even worse warming the underseal up in front of a fire and forgetting about it till it explodes
now that does make a mess :-(
Is it true that at one time there were only about a dozen keys for the entire Ford range?
If so when was it? Thanks. Read more
Lucas ignition switches used to have numbers on them, my 1970 Triumph bike for example.
It used to be standard practice for everyone present to try their car kys if someone locked theselves out. It usually worked. I recall opening a '70s Ford like this, but don't recall the model. I also recall a Cavalier parked on a beach, and much frantic angling with bits of wire going on. I tried the key of my 1987 Nova and the door popped open.
Haven't times changed.
Can anyone recommend a reputable company around the Oxford area that tints car windows, please?
Thanx in advance

I received the sunshades on next day delivery, included in the price, £150.
They were fitted in 5 minutes and look good, of good quality.
I was a little worried about one or two of them rattling, as the shades that fit in the windows over the luggage compartment are not held in place by anything other than the shape of the cars trim, but after driving around for a cuople of days, nothing at all.
My sister has some in her mazda, and warned of flapping when the windows are open, but I have driven at 70mph with the windows open with no flapping.
so all in all, exactly what I wanted and although, for me they seem expensive for blinds (although not compared to tints) they are worth the money.
Highly recommend them.
Thanx for links and advice chaps.

My trusted E39 530D (Manual) has developed some kind of fault with the gear lever (I use this phrase to avoid any over judicious swear filter!) when off throttle in 4th. No problem in any of the other gears.
Any ideas and does it sound (hugely) expensive?
I will be getting this dealt with at my trusted local BMW independent.
Thanks in advance

Very likely the mounts. Not too dear in either parts of labour. Its fairly common and you will probably find that your local GSF or ECP factors keep these.
I was looking at this:

...and wondered if any other country pays more than the UK for petrol. Given that even this example is actually wrong as a poster points out - we even pay more than is shown.
Surely Iceland or somewhere must be paying more than our $7+ USD per gallon?
However, taxing us so heavily does indeed work to reduce our emissions...can you imagine what vehicles we would be driving if we only paid $0.17 USD per gallon?

Remember watching one of Clarkson's round the world car programmes a few years back and one week he was in Iceland where he mentioned that petrol was £5 a gallon (it was on in the mid-late 90s).
Back in May I sold my Nissan QX to a member of the BR. He's quite happy with it apparently.
Just prior to the sale I'd placed a factory order for a new Subaru Impreza. Shipping from Japan has been delayed a bit - its on its way but not arriving until late July, so I've asked the garage to hang on to the car and put it on a '57 plate on September 1st.
Since selling the QX I've been using the bus to get to work (something I have never done and I was absolutely dreading) and borrowing my wife's car for other trips - juggling my schedule a where necessary. It has taken a while to adapt to this.
Despite living in a relatively rural area I have made the amazing discovery that I can get along very well without a car! The local bus service has been increased in frequency this year and I've discovered that I can travel into work in the local city (a 45 minute trip) for £12 a week on a discounted weekly ticket - that's just £48 a month, when I was previously spending £80 a month just on petrol! Not only that but I can sit and read the paper on the bus and relax.
So I've now made the discovery that I don't actually need a car and could save myself an absolute fortune by not owning one. I feel really stupid for not 'realising' this earlier, but like a lot of people I had become addicted to the convenience of having a car on the drive and also 'believing' that public transport was second rate and expensive without actually having tested it out over a lengthy period of time.
Now, the question is does anyone want a brand new '57-reg Subaru Impreza 2.0RX at a very very big discount...? Read more
The OP is talking about going from a 2-car family to 1-car + public transport. If the public transport is frequent, stops close to home and work, and the price is right - factor in major cash savings, then that's a very sensible decision.
