I hope you can help me....
My trusted E39 530D (Manual) has developed some kind of fault with the gear lever (I use this phrase to avoid any over judicious swear filter!) when off throttle in 4th. No problem in any of the other gears.
Any ideas and does it sound (hugely) expensive?
I will be getting this dealt with at my trusted local BMW independent.
Thanks in advance

Sounds like rubber transmission mounts.
You can get them from ECP and GSF.
You may as well do the final drive ones at the same time.
Also check propshaft bearing mount and rubber coupling/guibo.

Thanks for the swift reply (and to PU for assisting).
Mercifully that doesn't sound too expensive on parts - although I've no idea what the labour will be like.
I'll let you know.
Cheers!

Very likely the mounts. Not too dear in either parts of labour. Its fairly common and you will probably find that your local GSF or ECP factors keep these.
