Window Tinting - Sim-O
Can anyone recommend a reputable company around the Oxford area that tints car windows, please?

Thanx in advance

Don't know if this is any help but....you can buy rolls of tinting film that you stick on the insides of your glass, from several motor factor outlets, but i presume you want yours proffesionally done?

Do the windows have to be tinted or would custom fit blinds do the job having the bonus of being able to remove them in the winter ?
Window Tinting - Sim-O
I have thought of getting the film and having a go myself, as I'm not afraid to remove the windows to get a good finish, but when it is done badly, it looks really carp, so I would rather pay a bit (a lot?) extra and get it done properly.

---

I have yet to look into the custom fit blinds, I've only seen them on my BiL's Mazda 6 from Mazda, but that is the other option I am looking into.
I have an '03 passat estate, so was going to go to my local VW dealer to ask about them.
Are they available from other places do you know?

I always hoped tinted windows were a sign of disreputable company.

Have you soemthing that you wish to conceal behind all that tint? That would make me even more curious...

Only -O Jnr from the sun. My life isn't that exciting. ;-)

if it's just for junior and not drug dealing/gun running then I think Boots and others do a reusable square tinted panel that simply sticks to and peels off the glass - less fiddly than blinds on suckers that fall off.

That's why I suggested proper custom fit blinds with the proper clips which go into the door rubber not those rubbishy things that don't fit the window properly so have no chance of keeping the sun and heat out.

We have the square blinds at the mo, and they are pretty rubbish as they don't cover all the window, so there is always somewhere for the sun to get by, and as you say, fall off.
The custom fit blinds I think are a more attractive option, as a previous poster pointed out, they can be removed in the winter and also allow the window to be opened when fitted.

The square tinted patch is no different to the shade on suckers, as it doesn't cover all the window, and IMO looks carpier than a sucker blind.

We have the SWMBO's car for that. She looks more innocent than me.

You can hide your stash in the baby carrier!! or failing that you could conceal you ecstacy tabs in a fake fuel line under the length of the car

They may shade -O Jnr, but they also make looking out of the car from inside bally awful. Everything's the wrong colour. Why not buy some nice Thomas the Tank Engine blinds, or something?
Window Tinting - Sim-O
I'm not going to getthe fronts done, so there's no safety issue.
It's not being done to soup up my motor, so no criticism there.
-O Jnr is approx 6 months old, so I don't really think he gives a monkies what colour anything is.
We have some nice Thomas type shades, but the reason we are looking into alternatives is because they don't cover all the window, as per previous replies.

I didn't mention any safety issue.

Nor that.

It really does not matter. Get bigger ones, sellotape something onto the windows, DIY film, whatever.

The real reason you're asking is because you fancy having tineted windows, isn't it.

I know you didn't mention half of the things in my reply, I just didn't want this descending into a 'but it's dangerous'/'looks rubbish'/'waste of money', so I thought I would get in there first for everyones benefit, not just you.
With hindsight, it does read a bit stroppy. it wasn't intended.

I don't fancy tinted windows, I don't think it will enhace my car, but at the same time, it will look a whole lot better that bits of tat stuck on the windows that is sucker stuck blinds and small square patches of film that don't cover the window properly and so let -O Jnr burn in the sun.

oesunshades.com though nothing listed for passat estate. Maybe they can custom make or recommend ?

I know, from personal experience, buying blinds from the manufacturer is not that much more expensive than high street spares shops and they are custom fit and, usually, pretty good quality.

the current edition of Auto Express has a group test for window blinds which includes at least one cusom fit model.

As for the window film, I've done a couple of cars and found it really tricky but not impossible to get a good finish. It's certainly not necessary to remove the windows, in fact you'd probably damage the film when re-fitting them. The key is to clean the glass thoroughly first (alcohol based best), cut the film to size (slight oversize to tuck under the rubber surround), use a mildly soapy water trigger spray to keep the glass wet while you offer up the film and a small rubber squegee to remove the water again. Doing it in a garage (the more space the better) is a must - don't think you can just keep the car doors shut, you'll be sweating like a proverbial before you know it. The glue on these films seem to attract dust like magnets and will stick to themselves, you, the car, anywhere before they'll go near the windows....

I've a friend who always waves at cars with tinted windows, 'because the occupants think you can't see in, and I like to let them think they've wasted their money'.

It's interesting when they're stopped, and you peer into them, too!

I do that - much to MrsPU's annoyance !

Just been to VW. They don't do any blinds for side windows, only a big retractable one for the rear.

with ref to the windowsox how about slipping some sort of meshed material over the windowframe - a black negligee might be a bit distracting though.... :)

I would highly recommend the window sox - they're a great idea.

Peered through the tinted windows of a limo in London once to see the chauffeur getting jiggy with someone. How did I know it was the chauffeur - he was still wearing his hat.

I haven't done that though.

I ordered a set of blinds from www.oesunshades.com as they're exactly the sort of blinds I was after and arfe cheaper than tints.
It also proved too hard for Mr Lazy here to find anyone nearby who does tints.

I'll post what they're like when I get them.

I received the sunshades on next day delivery, included in the price, £150.
They were fitted in 5 minutes and look good, of good quality.

I was a little worried about one or two of them rattling, as the shades that fit in the windows over the luggage compartment are not held in place by anything other than the shape of the cars trim, but after driving around for a cuople of days, nothing at all.
My sister has some in her mazda, and warned of flapping when the windows are open, but I have driven at 70mph with the windows open with no flapping.
so all in all, exactly what I wanted and although, for me they seem expensive for blinds (although not compared to tints) they are worth the money.
Highly recommend them.

Thanx for links and advice chaps.
