Just drove to Manchester Aiport and back - c300 mile round trip on M-ways - in my 320d. Cruise kept the 'swingometer' fuel consumption indicator on the right side of the 50 mpg mark than I can, and not having to apply pressure to the accelerator was more comfortable on my back (history of back problems). And it was a novelty. I like it!
I guess this is hardly momentous news for you veteran cruisers (as it were) out there, but I couldn't resist sharing with you... Read more
Some contradictions between EPG and Radio Times about whether it is on or not.
RT says yes, EPG says no.
hi, im a new member can anybody help or advise me.
I have just aquired through the family the above motor and wanted to keep it for our 19 yr old son but it has a problem
the engine bay is covered in oil which I believe is being pumped back out from the filler cap so there would seem to be something causing crankcase pressure (I was in the motor trade but left 20yrs ago and am not familiar with modern technology) I have not done any investigation at this stage
are there any common problems with this model such as blocked filters breathers etc. it has done 97000 and had a full dealer service history till 74000 I would appriciate any help advice from you all even if it is to let it go
thanks guys

Only precaution is that it's often recommended to open the bleed screw when pushing the pistons back to prevent the mucky end of line fluid going back through the ABS pump and block. Note that the handbrake works on the main disc on the rear of these cars, and you need to screw the piston back in (clockwise) rather than just push it. Just use a screwdriver or something in the slots in the piston face.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
Hi,
I have a Golf V5 automatic 2000/W, 95000 miles. For a while now the change from second to third has been sticking slightly with the car then kicking as it goes into third (with a slight kick on the way down also). Driving on the motorway at a steady 80 the other day the car went into emergency mode (so the RAC man told me) with high revs and little power, but after stopping, the car was quite happy to carry on and fine when the RAC man arrived and drove it around - he said that the gears were sticking and the gearbox would probably need to be stripped.
The garage that I usually take my car to checked it and said not much wrong but they tweaked a couple of things on the gearbox - in fairness though, there was almost no change in the drive so I think they had no idea. Today I took it to an automatic gearbox specialist, they asked me no questions, hooked it up to a computer and told me that the gearbox was fine and I needed a new throttle body.
They seemed certain, but their lack of questions as to the specific problems I was experiencing did not fill me with confidence. Out of the three the specialist seems the best, but I just wanted to check that this all seems plausible before I spend a small fortune on getting this sorted.
As a possible first step, I have read in other threads that cleaning the throttle body can make a difference, is this something that a relative novice can take on or is it best to get a garage involved. If anyone knows a 'how to . .' link for this it would be appreciated
Thanks for any help you can give
Stuart

Are these boxes 'sealed for life' if so, a good fluid power flush and change of fluid (and filter if possible) may help things. Especially if the milage is 95,000, about the time when sealed for life boxes play up.
Heading up to Stockport on Saturday, last time we did it (again a Saturday) I think we came off the M6 at J17 and took the A534 / A536 / A523 through Congleton and Macclesfield to join the A6 at Hazel Grove though we got stuck in traffic on the A6 heading towards Manchester.
Would it be better to do M6 to J19, A556 / M56 / M60 ?
At least the few Mancunians that support MUFC will be either darn sarf at Wem-ber-ley or in the pub.

Cheddar, followed a similar route to you at the weekend from Mid Devon to just North of Liverpool - essentially M5 M6 M58.
Excellent run on Saturday (3hrs 40m on the road), thanks to the cup final I think. Return on Sunday slower but still good. Traffic eased once south of Birmingham and past the junction you mention.
Wish all journeys were as easy!
I think I need a new screen. Starring stone chip more than a 5 pence piece, which I am sure will only get worse.
Question is, do I call Autoglass or RAC windscreens? I would prefer OEM glass, rather than an aftermarket replacement (bad experience with another car)....
Any observations out there?
Cheers,

i worked for autoglass (solarglass) in the late 80s , you cant imagine how many screens were broken during the picking process from steel bins , and then not properly loaded on the vehicles for distribution ... we had to load them in order of curveture , from mini's to volvo f10s with lots of cardboard for packing in between screens ... i have to say i didnt stay long at the job
Aa? I know there's a trend to ignore capital letters, but blimey, everyone knows it't the AA!

I was yesterday driving north up the A38 having come off the M5 at J22 there is a roundabout at the junction with the A370 by Brent Knoll, as I came up to the roundabout I could see a white van waiting to turn right off the A370 southbound onto the A38, I also noticed a Merc disappear behind the van, I assumed the Merc was heading north on the A38 so would turn left at the roundabout to head north, the same way as me, rather than south with the van, i.e. the Merc was in the left hand lane to turn left and the van in the right hand lane to turn right. I entered the roundabout at about 30mph, it is normally a quick flick left, a quick flick right, before accelerating up the open NSL stretch that leads to and over the motorway before the 30 limit in Rooksbridge.
However as I crossed in front of the van I could see the nose of a CLS steaming towards me lifting under full throttle, I guess the driver wanted to head south, the same way as the van and thought he would nip around the outside of the van at the roundabout. We both braked, I could hear a chirp from the Mercs front wheels as it stopped, must have been a fag paper between us. A close shave, IIRC I took a quick second to indicate the lowest prime number to the driver of the Merc and carried on my way.
Strange thing in hindsight is that I am sure it had a V12 badge on the front wing behind the front wheel though afterwards recalled that the most powerful CLS is a V8, I have checked this am and it is the CLS63AMG with a 6.3 ltr V8, perhaps it was a Brabus or something or perhaps I was mistaken and it was a new S-Class. Guys
I have acquired a '98 Lanos 1.6i as a runabout. The car has been regularly serviced (100k), is generally fine, but is a bit hesitant when cold for about the first 5 mins. Slight press of the throttle before moving off causes the revs to momentarily drop to about 600 rpm, before they pick up and you can move off. This makes it easy to stall and a bit tricky in the traffic in the morning. After 5 mins or so the problem goes away and it's quite easy to drive. I haven't had it long enough to know if this is made worse by wet/cold mornings but it has been pretty wet lately.
Is there anything simple I can try out myself to try and rectify this?
Thanks Read more

1990? Oz outback? Surely a requirement for vMax and watch out for the marsupials?
