What oil would be recommended for my newly aquired HDi 110 (in a 406) assuming 6k changes?

I have a few gallons of Total Q7000 left from servicing its XUD predecessor which meets the handbook spec but would a fully synthetic 5w40 be more appropriate?

Thanks all, looks like I can use either so perhaps I'll finish what I've got and then switch it to a fully synthetic later.

Hi
A while ago I had my front drivers side wheel bearings replaced. Shortly after that the gaitor on that side split and leaked quite a bit of oil. This was also replaced by the garage. Since then I have had a noise coming from the wheel when I slow down to around 25 mph usually after having driven for about 15 miles. TThe noise is not a squeal but sounds more like a dry joint to me. The noise stops when the brakes are applied. The garage says there is no problem they can find. Could the oil leak after the gaitor split have caused a problem somwehere if the oil wasnt properly replaced? Any ideas as Im stumped.

Generally if the CV-joint is worn, it will clatter / knock when going around corners. Find an empty carpark (supermarket?) and go slowly around in circles, first in one direction, then the other. Make sure you're on full lock when you do it. If no clattering / knocking then it's not the CV's.

By the way, it's grease inside the gaitor, not oil.

As the noise stops when you apply the brakes, that sounds to me like the garage haven't fitted the anti rattle shims to the brake pads, or applied copper grease to the rear of the pads and they're rattling within the calipers.

The results are here: (down at the bottom of the page, click on the league tables)

www.whatcar.co.uk/news-special-report.aspx?NA=2255...2

{please do not post direct links to 'What Car' , ie, leave off the http part of the link - DD}

A lot of the results are fairly predictable (Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Skoda at the top), but there are some unexpected ones. A few that jump out at me:

1) The most satisfying (or should that be 'satisfactory'?) Ford is the Fusion.

2) Merc A-Class beats every single Subaru.

3) In the manufactuer's league table, Jaguar beats Audi, BMW, Mercedes, & Volvo . . . and they all beat Subaru (who are in the middle of the table with Nissan, Kia, and Ford.) Read more

A general comment about surveys - whilst there are lots of interpretations that can be gleaned from the information that a (public opinion) survey gives, the only thing they prove is that they have been filled in by people who want to take part in a survey.

I didn't actually work for them; their hacks just weren't brave enough to take a pile of twisted green wreckage down the runway at Ridiculous speed and jumped at an offer of help from a passing volunteer [or idiot.....?]

It was quite amazing how well those metal rod reinforced temporary screens stood up to it. Even at a true 100+ [well as true as a Muniquip T3 radar gun can get!] they stayed put; you could even still use the wipers. The stick-on unreinforced ones didn't make it past 40.

Hi all,

Earlier in the year I posted about some joy riders trying to take my corsa so on the advice of the forum I bought and stuck on a disklok but my luck seems to be out as the car has been shunted while parked on the road in front of the house and the bumper is cracked open and this happened over the last bank holiday W-end that I was away. I came back to find the damage and a note on the windscreen, a scribbled name and a mobile no. and my fears were realised as the no. does not work and I am on TPFT :-/

I can only guess that it happened during the day and he tried to appear honest to any onlookers, but as I intend to scrap the car at the end of the year I am not so angry but this is the 2nd time it has been hit while parked outside my house in 4 yrs and it is a quiet residential road.

So before I get a newer car I am seriously thinking of getting some sort of CCTV camera to point onto the road to catch a no. plate next time it happens and I wonder if anyone has done this?

Do I need a special camera with say a certain no. of fps to catch a no. plate clearly? and are there any commercially produced systems for this purpose?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Ashok is the fps per channel always equal to the total fps divided between the total no. of channels available or the no. of channels actually used with a camera? and is this limited by the lens used?

Hillman I intend to put it on a swivel joint so I should be able to attach it to the outside of the house and angle it down the road.

Another day (almost), another question...
could anyone point me in the direction of a website where I can input what I am paying for my own car (cost of borrowing, servicing, insurance, tax etc.) against what I would pay if I joined my company car scheme (BIK etc.)?

Thanks

If the Porsche 924 has a standard type of Bosch distributor, I'm sure it should be quite easy to find an equivalent Bosch Hall effect distributor which you can use. In a similar way, it's quite easy to update early Vauxhall OHC engines with points as fitted to, say MKI Astras, to the later spec of electronic ignition distributor as fitted to later Vauxhalls. You will also need the appropriate coil and igntion amplifier. You might also have to modify any existing ballast resistor set-up.

I wouldn't both with any aftermarket electronic ignitions, when it should be so painless and easy to use proper Bosch parts.

Sorry - I see you have already said how many miles you do. I'd still recommend a 2.2 D4D if you can find one in budget - superbly refined motorway cruiser, under 2000rpm @ 70mph.
