Have a 92 Orion Ghia (central locking). All locks/keys are knackered, so I have just bought a set off e-bay, to either swap out or re-build (they are from a Mk6 Escort, so not 100% sure that same fit). How do I remove the ignition lock/ barrel? I can't see how to get it out of the steering column. Any other tips ref re-building the locks also welcome Read more

There should be a pin that you press in after inserting the key and turning the ignition to position 1 or 2 to release the barrel. You could try drilling the pin out and withdrawing it.

What sort of abuse ? The verbal type ?

"the "abuse" fee entitles one to let rip at the contractor up to a predefined limit?"

My thoughts exactly, might be worth £50.00

I recently purchased a 1993 cavalier to save some gas. The fuel gauge was well over full, the seller said he just filled the tank. After 80 miles, the gauge barely moved, and I ran out of gas. My fuel gauge does not work! I am not picky, but I need help to figure out how to fix the fuel gauge. The other gauges seem to be just fine. I don't know where to start - I read some posts about grounding, some about sending units...which I guess means changing the entire fuel pump assembly, and some about a IP voltage regulator.
My question is, what do I ground ( cheapest idea first )
2nd Where is the IP regulator, and could the other gaues still work okay if it is bad, where would I buy one ( I looked at Auto Zone and Advance and O Reilly - and last - Any other ideas>?
It's not a bad little car - runs good - just need the fuel gauge! HELP please, thank you

I dropped the gas tank - found someone in the past actually cut a wire! Now, the fuel pump wiring harness has 4 wires coming from it - but the car plug only has 3 prongs......I have no idea how this happened, but here is what I did - There were 4 wires coming from the pump - Grey, Purple, Black, and black and white - The black and white was cut / unhooked, whith no way to plug it in, so I took a chance, put the black and black with white stripe together, plugged it back up, and the gas gauge works! And the car runs exactly the same!
Ground - You were right! The wire between the dashboard and tank was not making a complete circuit!
(That was too easy.....lol) Thanks again!

Hi,

I have a 1995 Renault Espace Champs Elysee' 2.2 Petrol Auto MPV, and when i set off it seems like the gearbox is snatching in first. It works fine in every other gear, and changes up and down smoothly without problem. I've recently had the gearbox fluid changed, and although this has lessened the effect, it is still happening.

Does anyone know what this could be, is it something simple and cheap to fix, or is this a sign that my gear box is on it's way out?

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Martin

Without wanting to be too pessimistic, Renault autoboxes are notoriously short-lived and 12 years is a long time (some give trouble after 4 or 5 years)! Get an autobox-specialist's opinion (find one in the Yellow Pages and get him to drive it). Be prepared to hear the worst - an autobox failure on a 12y/o Renault isn't financially viable to repair.

So I was stupid

I stuffed up

I got it wrong

Last week I asked you the best way to spend £5k on a 4 mile per day car

Quite rightly my dream of a shiny Fiat Panda were torched

Diesel 205 you said, £800 you said

Thus besmirched and educated I return

And I?ve turned it upside down

So what happens if wifey takes the Focus to the station and back and I get the second car!

So what?s it to be

My journey to work is 8 miles, so 16 per day, plus 9 months of the year I travel into London twice a week (quite a bit of Mway plus Tjams). I reckon my annual mileage is circa 12k

Money? I don?t want to spend more than £5k (tempt me) (or the missus is really getting the N plate 205(saved on the car but spent on the divorce, what, what?))

Given the miles, I can stand the fuel, but not interest in anything that needs ?special? attention (means more than once a month checking fluid levels, annual service, half a brain)

So the down side, my garage is a bit pokey 4.6 by 2.3 (but 3.8 by 2.3 and I don?t have to remove a cupboard, hence Turin?s finest!!) and it needs to fit in!

Round two ? whatcha got?

Oh and by the way, would really appreciate some actual links to cars for sale, not just theory. I live in Redborn, AL3, and will travel 100 miles ish.

Is this some sort of code?

Pure poetry, nothing to do with motoring at all. It's an allegory bemoaning the inversion of value-norms in a post-industrial society.

In the last few days I had a bit of a job changing gear until last night the car crunched into reverse, then refused to go into any gear apart from reverse. The only way I could move it was to put it in first with my foot on the clutch while the engine was off then start the engine. This morning I found that the clutch cable was slack inside the engine compartment and I had to tighten the clutch cable adjustment nut as far as it would go. Then it worked fine.

I drove the car on a local journey, and got a mile from my house before the clutch hit the floor. I paid £40 to get it towed home. I looked at the cable this evening and found it did not look like it was frayed at all. However, it had become disconnected from the pedal and the cable had retreated into the black plastic clutch cable cover, which sits somewhere below the windscreen.

I am trying to figure out why there would have been so much slack in the cable in the first place - even while it was still obviously attached to the pedal??

I should mention that when the cable was slack and I had to force it into reverse gear the car was juddering like mad, but after I had tightened the adjustment nut it changed gears just fine - for a few minutes anyway. Read more

Hi Peter. I couldn't find the part you mentioned. All I could see was the clutch release lever, and that is just as it should be from looking in the Haynes manual. I checked the cable this morning and it turns out the bracket that connects the end of the cable to the pedal had come off.

The cable was sitting inisde the bulkhead, but doesn't seem to be even frayed or snapped. The thing that baffles me is why it would have went so slack prior to breaking off if the problem was just the bracket that goes on the pedal. Anyway, I guess I'll just have to buy a new cable and find out.

I found this bit on the floor, but it seems too bulky to be the bracket and doesn't seem to hook into the pedal. img91.imageshack.us/img91/1953/bitrx7.jpg

If portrayal of female stereotypes annoys you, you might want to click on by ...

One of my gardening customers has had a Citroen C2 for a week. Today she complained to me that a) I hadn't painted or repaired her fence yet, and b) she couldn't open the hatch of her car.

While trying to "accidentally" step on one of her three bouncing, yapping, snapping Yorkshire Terriers I asked for the key fob, pressed the unlock button, reached under the lip of the tailgate and pressed the rubbery pad. There was a click and the top half of the tailgate hissed upwards under pressure from the gas struts. She looked at me open-mouthed; then she looked at the car open-mouthed. Above the din of the nauseating little dogs, she explained that she had been through the manual in minute detail but couldn't find any explanation of how to open the tailgate.

What did she expect; a large red lever marked "Pull this large red lever thingy to open the tailgate" ?

I drive a Rover Streetwise 2.0 TD and the water level has dropped and needs to be topped up. Considering the problems that Rover had with overheating is there any recommended antifreeze or do I simply to up the resevoir with water till the next service.
The car is now seviced at Halfords and runs very well but I am a bit worried given the demise of Rover. Can anyone recommend a suitable alternative regarding servicing or am I getting a bit paranoid?

Worst of all the K-series was a world beater in most other respects. High specific
power output good efficiency very compact and very free revving.

Yes, it was way ahead of it's time in many ways when launched in 1989(?). Seem to recall that a 214i had 95bhp at a time when a then state of the art Jap 1.3 engine would have 75/80 and a VW/Ford 1.3/4 would be wheezing out something like 65bhp.
