So I was stupid

I stuffed up

I got it wrong

Last week I asked you the best way to spend £5k on a 4 mile per day car

Quite rightly my dream of a shiny Fiat Panda were torched

Diesel 205 you said, £800 you said

Thus besmirched and educated I return

And I?ve turned it upside down

So what happens if wifey takes the Focus to the station and back and I get the second car!

So what?s it to be

My journey to work is 8 miles, so 16 per day, plus 9 months of the year I travel into London twice a week (quite a bit of Mway plus Tjams). I reckon my annual mileage is circa 12k

Money? I don?t want to spend more than £5k (tempt me) (or the missus is really getting the N plate 205(saved on the car but spent on the divorce, what, what?))

Given the miles, I can stand the fuel, but not interest in anything that needs ?special? attention (means more than once a month checking fluid levels, annual service, half a brain)

So the down side, my garage is a bit pokey 4.6 by 2.3 (but 3.8 by 2.3 and I don?t have to remove a cupboard, hence Turin?s finest!!) and it needs to fit in!

Round two ? whatcha got?

Oh and by the way, would really appreciate some actual links to cars for sale, not just theory. I live in Redborn, AL3, and will travel 100 miles ish.

Is this some sort of code?

Pure poetry, nothing to do with motoring at all. It's an allegory bemoaning the inversion of value-norms in a post-industrial society.

In the last few days I had a bit of a job changing gear until last night the car crunched into reverse, then refused to go into any gear apart from reverse. The only way I could move it was to put it in first with my foot on the clutch while the engine was off then start the engine. This morning I found that the clutch cable was slack inside the engine compartment and I had to tighten the clutch cable adjustment nut as far as it would go. Then it worked fine.

I drove the car on a local journey, and got a mile from my house before the clutch hit the floor. I paid £40 to get it towed home. I looked at the cable this evening and found it did not look like it was frayed at all. However, it had become disconnected from the pedal and the cable had retreated into the black plastic clutch cable cover, which sits somewhere below the windscreen.

I am trying to figure out why there would have been so much slack in the cable in the first place - even while it was still obviously attached to the pedal??

I should mention that when the cable was slack and I had to force it into reverse gear the car was juddering like mad, but after I had tightened the adjustment nut it changed gears just fine - for a few minutes anyway. Read more

Hi Peter. I couldn't find the part you mentioned. All I could see was the clutch release lever, and that is just as it should be from looking in the Haynes manual. I checked the cable this morning and it turns out the bracket that connects the end of the cable to the pedal had come off.

The cable was sitting inisde the bulkhead, but doesn't seem to be even frayed or snapped. The thing that baffles me is why it would have went so slack prior to breaking off if the problem was just the bracket that goes on the pedal. Anyway, I guess I'll just have to buy a new cable and find out.

I found this bit on the floor, but it seems too bulky to be the bracket and doesn't seem to hook into the pedal. img91.imageshack.us/img91/1953/bitrx7.jpg

If portrayal of female stereotypes annoys you, you might want to click on by ...

One of my gardening customers has had a Citroen C2 for a week. Today she complained to me that a) I hadn't painted or repaired her fence yet, and b) she couldn't open the hatch of her car.

While trying to "accidentally" step on one of her three bouncing, yapping, snapping Yorkshire Terriers I asked for the key fob, pressed the unlock button, reached under the lip of the tailgate and pressed the rubbery pad. There was a click and the top half of the tailgate hissed upwards under pressure from the gas struts. She looked at me open-mouthed; then she looked at the car open-mouthed. Above the din of the nauseating little dogs, she explained that she had been through the manual in minute detail but couldn't find any explanation of how to open the tailgate.

What did she expect; a large red lever marked "Pull this large red lever thingy to open the tailgate" ?

I drive a Rover Streetwise 2.0 TD and the water level has dropped and needs to be topped up. Considering the problems that Rover had with overheating is there any recommended antifreeze or do I simply to up the resevoir with water till the next service.
The car is now seviced at Halfords and runs very well but I am a bit worried given the demise of Rover. Can anyone recommend a suitable alternative regarding servicing or am I getting a bit paranoid?

Worst of all the K-series was a world beater in most other respects. High specific
power output good efficiency very compact and very free revving.

Yes, it was way ahead of it's time in many ways when launched in 1989(?). Seem to recall that a 214i had 95bhp at a time when a then state of the art Jap 1.3 engine would have 75/80 and a VW/Ford 1.3/4 would be wheezing out something like 65bhp.

Have just bought a Renault Laguna Estate, with credit card ignition key - thing.
Just the one.
I would feel safer if I had a spare, but am almost afraid to ask the price.
Does anyone have experience of this?
Is it possible to get them anywhere other than at Renault?
Thanks,

You can buy a blank key off ebay, and your Reno dealer should be able to program it for you, dont buy a used one they have to be blank to be programmed.

Just had my 306 a/c model back from the auto spark and he told me the cooling fans are kaput

just wondering if this is an easy diy job if i can source some fans?
Its 2001 facelift model but the only problem i think ill have is that the multiplug to the fan couling is completley stuck!

Any tips appreciated

Also if i look for second hand parts what should i be looking for considering its an aircon model - however the aircon doesnt work and im not planning on fixing it due to high costs Read more

scfc_151

i think ill try taking the bumper off and remove the motors that way

ill try leaving the housing alone as the multiplug is a pain anyway

Parts seem quite expensive too around £50 each just for the motors - apparantly theres 2 types for my car so ive got to source the right ones. I thought the motors would just go straight in no matter what 306 they were off as long as it were the twin fan type.

I'm normally the sort of wally who builds up queues behind him whilst observing speed restrictions, but after 30 years of fines/point free motoring, I have just 'been done' for achieving 47mph in a 40 limit.

Coincidentally, my insurance renewel was due, so this afternoon I confessed the dreadful news to my insurer. He seemed to think that getting a speeding ticket was an 'occupational hazard' of motoring these days and even sensible folks are going to slip up and get done sooner or later. The addition to the premium was £13. Nice little earner for them ;-) Read more

Thanks HJ - I had missed that link. Further interest and trade will be generated, I think, by the fact that all UK speed cameras are planned to go digital ie no film and no running out of film Article in today's Sunday Telegraph that I can't link to, covers it. There already 1000 digital cameras and the other 4000 will be upgraded 'soon'. There will use the same GATSO housings and there will presumably be no way of knowing which type is them during the changeover. It is a £10K upgrade and plugs straight into the existing housing.

Please could someone advise me on whether I have a problem or not. I parked my new (February 2007) mini cooper on my rather steep drive earlier this afternoon and went indoors with the shopping. Ten minutes later there was a very loud bang followed by a car alarm. Needless to say it was mine; the car had aimed itself squarely at the garage and has bent the door (up and over variety) back so that I would imagine a new door will be required. Fortunately, the damage to the car is minimal and amounts to a couple of tiny specs out of the paintwork on the bumper. I suppose the distance travelled was only about 5 feet but the force exerted was evidently considerable owing to the gradient. My question is this. The handbrake was on (most definitely, checked when I got in the car to reverse it back up the drive) but I had not put the car in gear. It is possible that the brake was not pulled right up to the limit as I have always understood this is bad for it but it was certainly almost there. Should I go back to mini or is this due to the fact that I did not put the car in gear. Having been used to an automatic I did not really know that this was essential when parking on an incline. In other words is this my own stupid fault or could there be something wrong with the car? Of course, there is also the matter of insurance - would household buildings/contents cover the garage door and would there be a query over the safety of the car?

Any advice gratefully received. Read more

Really?
I've never seen an automatic without 'P'.
What age is the car?

It's a honda 56 plates clutchless semi-automatic. Options are either neutral or reverse to the right of the gate, plus or minus centrally and auto or manual to the left. I've just been out and checked it to make sure I am not just being a daft woman.
