Hi.i spent all my money on a 1996 polo auto 4 weeks ago and ive been ripped off by a trader in enfield as the gearbox was leaking oil and not engaging properly after only doing 50 miles.i took the car to vw and they have taken out the gearbox and found that the torque converter has been welded up and they cannot take it apart to change the seals without wrecking the box.does anybody out there have any tips on repairing this problem or have/no anybody who has a gearbox for sale.i know if you go to a dealer everything has to be done by the book but im desperate and im low on funds now so any tips will be very much apreciated.thankyou. Just been promoted and have a car allowance burning a hole in my pocket !!!
I was advised to go down the route of a PCP but having seen the prices at Motor Provider thought it might be as cheap to buy myself.
I'm not look at anything too flash (small family car) and wondered whether there were any catches to the quotes on their web site (too cynical for one so young!!!!)
Can anyone shed any light on thier experiences or recommend any other brokers in the North of England (I'm based in Oldham) that might be worth a look
Cheers

Is it just me or have the good old fashioned 'rock solid' reliable marques gone forever?
Mercedes and VW used to be synonymous with quality and reliability; no more it seems.
Now it appears that the 'if it's your money, buy Japanese' adage is slipping, as I read more and more about manufacturing economies biting into the historical reputation of the likes of Toyota and Nissan.
Is there a single manufacturer that can claim the crown?

I have always owned and got very good service from VWs. As you can see from the previous letter, I have owned a Seat Toledo TdiSE from new and it has proved to be far the best car. I worked and lived in South Africa for 18 years. In South Africa they almost worshipped Toyota. The sales slogan out there was: " Everything keeps going right Toyota". In those days they were mostly telling the truth.
Do you remember the large old Toyota small truck they tried to destroy on " Top Gear". It was even blown up in a skyscraper demolition, also drowned etc etc. It still started!!
I have a 2002 1.0 litre Corsa. Recently noticed that when clutch is depressed and engine running what sounds like a relay can beheard clicking off and/or on under the dash. It does this many times in a minute. Access is difficult and I cannot release lower trim panel under dash to gain better access. No function on car seems impaired. Any ideas of cause or how to gain access? Read more
The only thing I can think of that is situated drivers side is the electric power steering system(if fitted). This may produce the noise you describe.
im trying to replace the fan belt on my 1999 1.9d 206 and having no such luck. have managed to get the belt off . then i noticed that the pully on the spring tensioner has a big chip out of it and the unit that it sits on is bent. ive taken the pully off and undone all the bolts but it still wont come off, its loose but wont come off. i noticed that its attatched to the spring on the other side.
so how do i get into the spring to undo the bolt so i can take the tensioner unit off?
any help would be great

As an infrequent poster I suspect this has been covered already but on a crowded A1 on a bank holiday Sunday two artic drivers seemed to take malicious pleasure in holding everyone up. They drove abreast for about 3 minutes. When the overtaking manouvre was completed after three miles or so, within 20 seconds the overtaker was about three lorry lengths ahead.
One would have thought that the now slipstreaming overtaken lorry would easily maintain station immediately behind. However, I have often observed this apparently narrow-minded behaviour - and I expect the high-mileage users of this site must be thoroughly fed up of it.
Feeble excuses about limiters and cruise controls just don't wash. Why do they do it? Read more
I'll let you know I went to very good school - it was approved it was.
So having gone around the houses with my wife and her new car... we're now considering (very strongly) a Honda Jazz. Budget is £5k.
Spotted one at local dealer with screen price of £5,600. It's the SE version, Ice blue, 62K miles and has a CD multichanger in the glove box.
Wife is concerned about high mileage (we just sold her M reg 94 Fiesta 1.3 LX Equipe privately for £575 with only 72K miles on clock!) and I'm concerned about price. Took it for a test drive today and I thought it was a bit jittery, but my wife liked it.
She's also considering the C3 and the new shape Fiesta. And maybe a Polo, but she thinks the interior is a bit drab and plastic and I think she has a point!
So I told the salesman I thought it was overpriced and that we'd go off to think about it as she wasn't sure. Called him later to tell him £5k got the deal after he offered £5,200. I played hardball, he went away to manager and came back and said that was the best he could offer as they'd only make £417 on the car if they sold it at £5K... Told him we'd leave it.
So am I being daft in letting it go at that price or can I do better? Read more

Why not just shorten the extra long link with tinyurl (there's now a function in the Announcements
area of this forum) and post the shortened link that's given to you.

I'm off to the auctions tomorrow. Father in Law had his old (but tidy) diesel Xantia wrote off a few weeks ago. I initially questioned him about how much he wanted to pay for a replacement, " about £500" was the reply.
Rang him today and offered to take him to the auctions tomorrow. I said he should get something fairly decent for his needs for £500. "I'll go a bit higher if needs be" he says. How much higher....."I could manage about £6000".
Talk about a jump in budget. I think I'm going to have to tie his arms down. Should be an interesting day! Read more
Well, just back..wet and cold. Initial car that caught his eye was a Primera 1.8 sport , 2000 on a Xreg. That went for £1200, but he'd already decided he wanted something newer as it went through the ring. The car is primarily for the mother in law, so the next car that caught his attention was a Peugeot 206 SW. 54 plate, 10000m. It had a tiptronic box and I wasn't too keen. It was very tidy though and he kept going back to it. I said if it went well below forecourt price it may be worth it, but it started at £5600 and went on to over six grand. Just didn't know enough about the gearbox to be comfortable.
We've come home with an 02 reg Astra 1600. 1 owner, 42000m and full Vx service history from new by supplying dealer. Very clean and tidy for £3100. FiL is very pleased, which is what counts as it was his money. It wasn't the cheapest Astra to go through, but it was definitely the cleanest. Drives very well and gives every impression of being looked after. It's not a massive saving over forecourt prices (around £500-1000 searching Autroader) but enough to justify the visit.
Two cars that caught my eye an 05 reg Vectra 1.9 diesel SRi (120) 19000m for £5250.... keyed down one side but never the less, a bargain. Facelift Apr 06 reg Mondeo 2.0 LX, 19000m, £6250 provisional. I don't think that it would've taken a lot more to get it. I tried to persaude him, but he wasn't keen.
Hiya guys,
My first post ever on this site.....
well anyway lets get down to what I need to know,
I have a Vauhall Cavalier 2litre Diplomat Its Automatic and after doing a diagnostics test on the mean machine it came back with code 41 So I got that far...Not bad for a female eh? Anyway I have found the meaning to the code it is" Gear error Hydraulic Fault. Usually an internal transmission mechanical failure - Forward Clutch.
where can I get a clutch? I do know that the gearbox is an AF20 will other AF20 clutches work in my car and what other cars have them/>??
This is a toughie for me. I am stuck like the days in school when i couldnt get my head around algibra :-(
any help mucho appriciato lol ;-)
Thanks, Lisa Read more
I have changed it for another AF20 but since then I have stripped down the old one and its pretty straight forwards
I might rebuild it or hang on to it for spares!!! as i have just got myself a 2litre vectra which has the same autobox.
keeping myself busy this week doing the head gasket and timing belt.
I enjoy it though!
I have a S reg Volvo S40 16valve 2.0 litre, coming back on the M25 yesterday a spark plug went, sounded like a chinook helicopter in my bonnet! Had the RAC out & the thread has gone, they tried to put a new spark plug in but it just spun around...they advised me to get a new thread cut or a helicoil fitted...I've spent the entire day phoning around & no-one seems to do this....the couple of mechanics that will do it can't for the best part of a week but I need it done asap...one of them suggested to get a kit myself & do it...no idea how easy this would be.
I live near Redhill, Surrey...any ideas or info would be very much appreciated!!!!!! Read more
I don't know the Surrey area at all, but I'm really surprised that you can't find anyone to do this. Have a look through your yellow pages under 'engine reconditioning'. Also ring a tool factor (the people who sell the helicoil kits) and ask if they can suggest someone - they may well have a few regular customers who they can recommend.

Have to agree with what was said about Motorpoint. I visted them at thier Derby location after travelling up from Essex. Very helpful and all the cars I saw looked very good, both in quality and price. Didn't buy from them though as they didn't have the colour I wanted at that time, so I returned south and bought from a local maindealer , using the Motorpoint prices to leverage an excellent discount...
