To all you VTEC lovers out there.
Honda have filed a patent on AVTEC for a fully variable valve timing and lift system.
The only one currently on the market currently is BMW?s Valvetronic, which also removes the need for a throttle butterfly. Every other system as of today has fully variable valve timing, but valve lift is only switchable between two fixed profiles.

I may be wrong but I believe some recent Porsche flat sixes have an infinitely variable lift system.
I cannot help thinking that Toyota seem to recall alot of models due to faults.
Is their quality haylo slipping a bit ? Or are they now worse than anyone else ?

Yes, the Focus is doing very well these days and earning Ford a good reputation across Europe I think - quite a turnaround. The Corsa is more of a surprise, but credit where its due.
The clutch cable on my 95 306 TD was getting a bit jerky in operation and according to the car by car breakdown they have a tendancy to 'dry out' so I disconnected the cable at the clutch end. fitted a plastic bag around the cable and let some oil dribble through overnight. Next morning re-connected the cable and the clutch felt nice and smooth on the pedal. Problem now is that the clutch is slipping when it wasn't before. No oil escaped from the cable oiling process. The Haynes manual says that the clutch cable is self adjusting but I can't see how this could possibly work. Any ideas? Read more
just replace the cable they're only about £20, the slipping may be it adjusting during use

Have an intermittent problem with kick-down coming in and shooting revs up to around 4000 plus when in drive and cruising.Box is not slipping gears but also does in in Sport Box mode. Also will change gears rather aggressively at times.More like thumping in on change up or down.Vehicle has only done 60,000 miles from new with two owners.Am told diagnostics on floor pan may isolate fault but not know whether this is Honda or Rover fitting. When doing normal speeds will for a few second or so accellerate r.p.m to over 4000 change into kick down then seconds later revert to normal.
Any idea's ?????

Before doing anything else; check the gearbox fluid level - following the handbook's procedure to the letter.
morning all
just had a look at the berlingo's brake lights and apart from the third level one the nearside and offside bulbs are not functioning
i have checked all other bulbs in the console and also swapped around the the bulbs there are no problems with any at all. i have checked all fuses in the fuses panel and no problems i have examined the brake pedal and switch nothing wrong there i have also checked as far as possible the wiring there are no rusty or corroded connections nor split or bent wiring.
does anyone have any ideas as the third brake light works so it seems to only be isolated to the nearside and offside brake lights. i have had an idea of a temporary connection of the third level lights to the nearside/offside lights but will need a solution for the mot

Hi All
My R plate Rover has started leaking water from somewhere. It is pooling in the rear left Pass side footwell. This new set of pants weather has made it almost tsunami levels back there! Any ideas where i should start. (Have sunroof too btw no witness marks there and carpets are not wet other than back there).
Thanks in advance.

Am soon to take my annual trip to the Worlds greatest motor race in France in June and have acquired a garmin 350 euro navigation system. I recently read a post in Honest John in the telegraph about what was and was'nt legal across the channel. Can anyone help? I believe there was a website mentioned which outlined which sysytems were allowed and which not.

Hi all,
still having problems with oil loss from this car have followed all previous advice and thought I had cracked it but alas no I have been told that there is a gasket between the camshaft housing and the main cylinder head which is rubber and prone to leaking is this so and are there any other possibilities.
any advice gratefully accepted

Firstly, are Torx and Star the same thing and if not, what's the difference.
Secondly, I have a set of Torx (or are they Star?) bits that see occasional use but when I come accross a fixing that requires a socket, not a bit, I use an ordinary 3/8ths drive socket. This has worked fine so far, but am I going to come unstuck at some point, perhaps when the fixing is really tight? Read more
they get called star because of the shape but are generally referred to as torx or tx .

This is true, but you dont pay 'Chinese prices' for either of these items, because the parent companies watch over the manufacturers like a Hawk to ensure proper QC.
Having said this, I have heard that Goodyear tyres have been complained about recently since the Chinese made ones have come onto the market.
