The clutch cable on my 95 306 TD was getting a bit jerky in operation and according to the car by car breakdown they have a tendancy to 'dry out' so I disconnected the cable at the clutch end. fitted a plastic bag around the cable and let some oil dribble through overnight. Next morning re-connected the cable and the clutch felt nice and smooth on the pedal. Problem now is that the clutch is slipping when it wasn't before. No oil escaped from the cable oiling process. The Haynes manual says that the clutch cable is self adjusting but I can't see how this could possibly work. Any ideas? Read more

just replace the cable they're only about £20, the slipping may be it adjusting during use

Have an intermittent problem with kick-down coming in and shooting revs up to around 4000 plus when in drive and cruising.Box is not slipping gears but also does in in Sport Box mode. Also will change gears rather aggressively at times.More like thumping in on change up or down.Vehicle has only done 60,000 miles from new with two owners.Am told diagnostics on floor pan may isolate fault but not know whether this is Honda or Rover fitting. When doing normal speeds will for a few second or so accellerate r.p.m to over 4000 change into kick down then seconds later revert to normal.
Any idea's ?????

Before doing anything else; check the gearbox fluid level - following the handbook's procedure to the letter.

morning all

just had a look at the berlingo's brake lights and apart from the third level one the nearside and offside bulbs are not functioning

i have checked all other bulbs in the console and also swapped around the the bulbs there are no problems with any at all. i have checked all fuses in the fuses panel and no problems i have examined the brake pedal and switch nothing wrong there i have also checked as far as possible the wiring there are no rusty or corroded connections nor split or bent wiring.

does anyone have any ideas as the third brake light works so it seems to only be isolated to the nearside and offside brake lights. i have had an idea of a temporary connection of the third level lights to the nearside/offside lights but will need a solution for the mot

Am soon to take my annual trip to the Worlds greatest motor race in France in June and have acquired a garmin 350 euro navigation system. I recently read a post in Honest John in the telegraph about what was and was'nt legal across the channel. Can anyone help? I believe there was a website mentioned which outlined which sysytems were allowed and which not.

Firstly, are Torx and Star the same thing and if not, what's the difference.

Secondly, I have a set of Torx (or are they Star?) bits that see occasional use but when I come accross a fixing that requires a socket, not a bit, I use an ordinary 3/8ths drive socket. This has worked fine so far, but am I going to come unstuck at some point, perhaps when the fixing is really tight? Read more

they get called star because of the shape but are generally referred to as torx or tx .

Any BRers unlucky enough to have been on the A40/Gypsy Corner/Hangar Lane area on Saturday morning? I thought I was in downtown Naples. What with the football, Bank Holiday traffic and general bad-mannered impatient Londonness it was an absolute nightmare, particularly for bumpkins like us only allowed into London for a wedding.....

It took us an hour and three-quarters to get from just outside (south) Slough to Northfields Catholic church. Thank heavens the priest was late too.

Why, I have to ask, if someone is trying to pull across three lanes of traffic because they got in the wrong lane, and you CANNOT move forwards or backwards due to not having VTOL, does that make you deserving of the charming cheek and hand "relief" gesture? I am sorry I cannot miraculously shorten my vehicle, Mr Silver Nissan Sunny and your charming cargo of weasel-faced teenage scum... sincere apologies for that one. Read more

Changing lanes on the A40, that's what - and possibly ending up in a hangar (sic) st Northolt.

If anyone is interested..... (by the way: why does a Russian town have an American name? Because it was re-named after an Italian Communist Party leader in the 1970s)

TOLYATTI, Russia, May 27 2007-Judging by the sulk on Vladimir Putin's face and the force with which he was slamming the car doors shut, the president was not in a good mood.

Perhaps weighing on his mind during a visit earlier this month to the showroom of Avtovaz, maker of the famous Lada, was the fate of the country's car industry against foreign competition.

"Without new technologies, we can't compete. We need investment," one harried Avtovaz executive told Putin as he pointed apologetically to a chart showing losses in market share to foreign models.

Other executives stood whispering as Putin cast a sceptical eye over the cars. "Looks alright," Putin muttered of one vehicle, showing interest only in another sports model that is not yet in production.

The kowtowing at Avtovaz was not just about awe in front of Russia's powerful head of state. The company, which is now state-controlled, is asking for billions of dollars (euros) in state money to regain market share.

The maker of legendary and notorious models such as the Lada and the Niva, Avtovaz once dominated the Soviet auto industry and remains by far Russia's biggest car producer.

But that heyday is long gone. The cars, a source of amusement in the West because of their boxy appearance and reputation for being unreliable, are being shunned by many younger Russians.

Avtovaz's share of the Russian car market went down from 38.7 to 32 percent in 2006, while foreign carmakers like Ford, Renault and Toyota for the first time took up most of the market -- 51 percent.

Even Lada loyalists fond of the car's resilience during Russia's harsh winters and the ease with which it can be repaired are giving in to a flood of foreign models that are becoming increasingly affordable.

Avtovaz appears at least to have put behind it the bad old days of the 1990s, when rival mafia clans battled over dealership deals and contract killings of Avtovaz executives in the company town of Tolyatti were frequent.

It was here that controversial billionaire Boris Berezovsky made his first millions by setting up a dealership called Logovaz to sell Avtovaz cars in the Moscow region.

Berezovsky, a fierce Kremlin critic who lives in self-imposed exile in London, is now wanted in Russia on charges of massive fraud linked to his business with Avtovaz during the 1990s.

The company is currently not in bad financial shape. Annual net profit rose by 79.4 percent in 2006 from 54.2 to 96.8 million dollars (40.1 to 71.6 million euros), though debts to suppliers are still large.

Published results show that sales have fallen, however. One local newspaper in this company town, located 1,000 kilometres (621 miles) southeast of Moscow on the banks of the Volga, has spoken of a sales "crisis."

The sprawling Avtovaz factory in Tolyatti covers 600 hectares and was designed by Italian car giant Fiat. It began production in 1970 of the Zhiguli, named after a chain of picturesque local hills.

"The equipment is 40 years old.... It'd be easier to build a new factory than to upgrade the current one, but there's no money," said Alexei Mironov, editor of the Tolyattinskoye Obozrenie weekly.

The company is making efforts to upgrade however. In 2001, it set up a joint venture with General Motors to produce the Chevrolet-Niva and it has signed up for a similar project with Austrian-Canadian auto parts producer Magna.

"We want to see this powerful car factory do well not only in Russia but also outside of Russia," Frank Stronach, chairman of Magna, said earlier this month at the signing in Tolyatti of a memorandum on the planned joint venture.

But locals fear that moves towards greater efficiency at the company will force Avtovaz to shed non-core assets such as hospitals and sports complexes dotted around the city.

The company employs 108,000 people out of a population in Tolyatti of 730,000 and has large supplier networks that create jobs for thousands of other local inhabitants.

As Sergei Davydov, a reporter at Tolyattinskoye Obozrenie, put it: "Our city is a monster standing on a crutch. The crutch is Avtovaz. If that's taken away, the city will just collapse."

Overall market share has fallen but sales continue to rise. Much of the damage incurred to the companies finances in the early 90's was due to schemes that involved cars being sold to a Cypriot company that then had the exclusive sales distribution rights with massively deferred payments to the factory.

Currently, Avotvaz continues to introduce new models whilst maintaining production and parts supply of most of its old range - an admirable policy.

Additionally, the likes of Hyundai and Kia and in the throws of establishing assembly plants in Russia, Hyundai are already assembled from KDK in the Cherkassy factory of Luaz and Astras and Passats are also assembled here in Ukraine alongisde Ladas and Volgas.

In principal the future of the automotive industry looks good for Russia and Ukraine however, China is a major threat with its ability to produce cars to western standards for a fraction of the cost.

Hi,

My 1987 fiat ducato van has stuck in reverse gear.
I jack up the wheels to release the gearbox. Checked the clutch cable but no luck.
The vehicle works ok in reverse. The clutch holds o.k but I cannot move the gearstick to neutral or forward gears. I am thinking the gearbox has seized but not sure why.

Any suggestions please.

Mike.

Mike, sorry but my first hand knowledge only stretches to linkage replacement!

As you probably know this linkage can be a real pain, I hoped you might find that you could easily come out of reverse gear by manipulating the gearbox rod with linkage removed, thus proving the fault. (I once got stuck in fourth gear on a slope but that's another story)

It is unusual to experience actual gearbox problems, apart from the 1995 to 2002 models which are prone to fifth gear failures, I suppose that this means that, if you are convinced your 'box is at fault, any s/h one that you source is likely to be OK.

In your positon, I would make doubly & trebly sure that the box was at fault by putting in reverse, removing linkage, & trying to get back in to neutral, then I'd try to get a s/h box from Derek at Delfin Designs, failing that I would try an online breakers
