On Sunday morning I was traveling at a good 70mph in a line of traffic on the A27 between Portsmouth and Chichester. A Polish registered coach caught me up very quickly driving at an unbelievable speed. The line of cars slowed at the approach to a slip road but I don't think the coach driver saw this happening and he got so close to the back of my car that I thought he was going to hit me.
The coach swerved round the line of cars and sped off into the distance leaving all the 70mph drivers behind.
My question is, would it have been any point in reporting him, I couldn't write his registration number down and even if I had would the police have bothered to do anything about it? The driving of some of these foreign registered coaches and lorries at times beggars belief. Read more

I thought you'd agreed to stop the sister jokes! ;-()
How do (did?) they work?
What are the benefits?
Have they been superseded by modern traction control systems??? Read more
This thread reminds me of a conversation I had with my trike mechanic, who builds trikes for a living and has a lot of experience with the old Beetle chassis/gearbox. He said he didn't like the ones with LSD at all, one nearly put him through a hedge once. Didn't get to ask why as we were both in a hurry ...

I read in "Mr Money" in the Telegraph on Sat 24th Mar about a particular Ford Dealership Group selling a Ford Ka Studio for £4995, 50% down and 2 years 0% finance. Unfortunately "Mr Money" did not say which group, has anybody seen any adverts or does anybody know what Dealership it was?

Appears to be Lloyds TSB:

have a slightly srange (or perhaps obvious to those in the know) problem with my corolla 1994 1.6GLi 16v EFI
A couple of times this week when trying to start , when I turn the ignition the dashboard lights go dim, as if the battery is flat, by as soon as i touch the throttle - before the engine has fired the dashboard lights go bright and it turns over and fires instantly.
Then drives OK and starts perfectly the next time....
I am therefore suspecting the battery and or alternator.
I don't have low charge lights on when I am driving.
If I use a voltmeter to test the battery :-
(A) Do I need to disconnect the leads from the terminals first
(B) what voltage should Iexpect across the terminals (no load)
To test the alternator
(A) How do I get the test-leads onto the output, as there seems to be just a multiuplug connection - do I have to disconnect this or is there a terminal exposed somewhere I can get the probe/croc-clips of the voltmeter on to ?
(B) again what kind of voltage should I expect, and is there anyway of testing under load etc. by switching various things on ...

I think that the problem could be the engine earth. The movement of the throttle could indicate the earth is being sent through the cable. just disconnect, clean and refit. It costs nothing to do this first (always do the free checks first).

Got pulled doing 110 on the M1 today, the policeman said they'd recorded me doing up to 115 at one point. I was genuinly appologetic & regretful, and they dealt with the matter by issuing a FPN and 60 pound fine. I think the Policeman appreciated that I wasn't likely to do it again (which I'm not), and that the road was clear which must have been a factor in their leniancy, but I still think I had the luckyest escape ever. Lesson learned. There can't be that many people caught doing that sort of speed & not banned? Read more
I had had my windscreen replaced that day, and Autoglass had been unable to attach my rear view mirror so I was without it. Thought I half -spotted something flashing in my wing mirror but thought it was sunlight (which was behind me & very bright at the time)
Car is a Golf GTI. I am in the process of test driving some 3.0 Z4's and Boxter S's at the moment but am now (not supprisingly) going off the idea of getting one.
I want to change the gear oil on my wife's Kangoo ( doggie waggon) at about 30k to ensue maximum life but am uncertain about what to put in. Renault specify only Elf TRJ 75-80 for gearboxes with brass snychro rings. Can I use a good synthetic oil? I have used Ovoline Evolution synthetic on my Land-Rover with very good results. I notice that Castrol also suggest a synthetic. Any ideas out there?

Thanks, I'll stick with Elf - I can get a good price on 5l.
hi all,
i have now got my old mondeo back from the garage after so many problems with the one i bought from them. ( see my last post)
anyway..................
i have a R reg 1.8 mondeo verona (zetec) engine. the few probs are minor i think so any advice would be gratefully recieved. firstly.........i drive about 15 miles to work in the morning and it doesnt seem to heat up , the temp gauge is showing the needle just over the white cold block, but i still get nice warm air in the car?????.
secondly........for a 1.8 it doesnt seem very quick at all, i have to take the revs upto 3500-4000 to get it motoring, when i put my foot down like this sometimes it will jerk / hesitate. thirdly........ even if i drive it sensibly (slow) it seems to be using a lot of fuel.
i have no clues to what might be causing the obove so any help would be gratfully recieved as was the last people who helped me.
thanks

I am unsure of running the dual fuel and hope to get an explaination of the finer details.
So far I understand that I must start the car in petrol and then switch to gas. Does this mean every single time? And how long must I
idle in petrol before switching? Would you run on gas all the time? How do you tell how much gas is left in the tank?
The salesman wasn' that informative. thanks Read more
multi point injected electronic, these are its specifications. the gas tank was fitted some time later.

Just had a 3-day test drive in a Kia Cee'd - I can't remember now where I saw the advertisement but although it's not my size (we need one car bigger, one smaller) I thought it might be fun. It was.
GOOD
- 1.6 petrol engine gives out 120 bhp - pretty healthy for a Golf-size car.
- Very good quick response to the accelerator - plenty of shove straight away. This was perhaps the most obvious, and welcome, contrast with my diesel B-class.
- More room in the back than a Golf, and the rear seats fold flat. I got a full-size music keyboard in there yesterday.
- Handling not as sharp as a Focus, but sharper than a Golf.
NOT SO GOOD
- Infuriating stalks the wrong way round: fine if you don't have another car I suppose.
- Silly name, and why the apostrophe?
- the stylist has been allowed to win with the door mirrors which are a silly shape and hioner visibility of things overtaking you.
- you have to remove the headrests to fold down the back seat
- rear vision not great - again the stylist has decreed one of those silly little 'sixth light' windows, as on the Jazz and Colt.
In sum it was fun to drive and reasonably practical. I'll wait for the estate which is to come later this year with the option of a 2.0 diesel. Our vicar has a Sportage 2.0 dlesel and says it's very well soundproofed (incldentally he tows a caravan and the Kia is the best towing car he's ever had). Read more
I miss the headlamp dip switch that used to be on the floor to left of brake pedal on my old auto Zodiac and big chrome horn ring on steering wheel - being an older driver I am used to indicators on right - I still indicate to wash windscreen occasionally

Thanks all i'll try that it's not a deep scratch but i notice it !!!
