Have been considering replacing the standard air intake on my Almera with a K&N induction kit. The kit only costs around £45 and looks easy to fit, but would there be a noticable change in performance, or would it just "sound faster"?!?!

Also, what would the implications be for insurance? Would I need to inform my insurance company that I'd modified the car?!

Thanks. Read more

Reiterating really, but what was done to engines in the 60s and 70s to increase efficiency has already been done on modern units.Poorly designed, strangling filter boxes were the norm then, but not now,so K&N type kits are more for under bonnet show.

Hi,

I need to replace my roof mounted aeriel (FRONT) and understand that I need to go through the light fitting in the front to get to it, However I cant seem the get the light fitting out. It is not just the standard light fitting it has the remote central locking sensor in it as well.

Any Help would be much appreciated the CD's are getting a bit boring.

Although I've been happy with my local VW main dealer (Heritage at Weston-super-Mare), I am considering having my increasingly elderly 2001 1.9tdiPD Passat serviced by an independent specialist. Can anyone recommend one within thirty miles of Bristol? The only one I've visited in Bristol turned out to be a bloke in an office who told me they 'take away the car to be worked on off-site'. I don't think so, no thanks! Is the higher price charged by the main dealer a price worth paying for peace of mind? Truth is, I probably still think so. Read more

This has slowly got worse over the past 3 months or so - when in traffic block I am getting this very loud thudding/roar from the air intake. New filter plus tried cleaning everything out, but no difference. Does anyone know whether there is a fix for this? It is really very loud and embarrassing!

Thanks, Y Read more

My Passat was losing coolant slowly and it was a corroded radiator- well hidden as well.

Does it exist?? i mean there must be rover/mg vehicles out there that are still effectively still under manufacturers waranty, so if they had a problem with their vehicle, how would they go about claiming because the rover group i guess that what its called went/closed.
Anyone know the answer. Read more

There is no MG/Rover warranty unless a separate INSURANCE backed warranty through the supplying dealer

Just wondering how hard it really is to clean and have it look clean a black car, cos i always hear that its mean't to be a pain. Read more

No harder to clean than any other car, but shows up
a layer of dust within minutes of finishing the job. Looks
dirty again within a day's driving.
Does look brilliant when freshly washed and polished though!!

An even bigger nightmare if you live in a hard water area and are constantly battling with getting limscale marks of the freshly rinsed paintwork. I have a no black or very dark coloured cars policy at my house !

Hi,

I read in the Mail on Saturday a story about drivers paying for victims of violence, tell me its an april fools wind up?

It said that a surcharge/fine would be added to any penalty that a driver caught speeding would face, £15 on top of anything else, the money would apparently go to help pay for victims of violence!

While I have every sympathy for people beaten by their partner, surely the perpetrator should pay for the crime, and not motorists yet again. Read more

I'm looking to buy my first diesel as a compromise of power v economy.

My compromise is, i've been driving a 1.6 petrol toyota corolla for a while now and i want something quicker. Toyotas are cheap for me, i can buy them at v near cost with cheap servicing and often labour free bills. So, new cars are very expensive but getting it so cheap i think i can justify it if i keep it a while 4/5years. Therefore i have been test driving the toyota auris T180 - fabulous diesel engine, crazy amounts of power, very quick, very quiet/smooth and good economy of 44mpg. Problem is i drive roughly 12-15k miles a year so not really diesel justifcation territory but would give me big fuel bills on say a golf GTI.

Diesel or petrol... want more power / more thrill but fuel bills... :(

An older type-r / golf GTI or even a Focus ST are all so very appealing but could live with the fuel bill?? I could easily afford it but i just dont want to buy a 6 second car because i'd probably end up loosing my license and the fuel would probably end up bother me, even this t180 worries me because it is so quick.

So given my miles, cheap cost of ownership etc would you got for a fast diesel for my mid commutes or get a real hot hatch and stump up the fuel bill. Read more

Thanks WillDeBeest, very reassuring post :)

I know i'm set to loose a lot by buying a new car but i'm hoping the trade price i will pay along with cheap running costs will make up for that. Providing i keep for 5 years and dont encouter any major problems it should be just as cheap to run as a 2yr old car with 30k on the clock.

I have around 1.5k of disposable income each month so in 5 years i should be in a comfortable position to think my car has served me well. It cost 17k and its worth 7k private now but i've got 10k in the bank i'll go and buy another. I'm happy with that concept - i got to own a brand new, untouched car and i dont do anything else with my money.
