I own one of the above and in recent days the ABS light comes on intermittently during driving.

Can anyone offer any advice on why and is there a cure?

Many thanks. Read more

Pulled up at the jet wash this afternoon, the guy in front was busy giving his Honda CRX a good vigorous rub-down with Cif, that non-abrasive, gentle-on-the-paintwork car wax. Said he´d been using it for 3 years - by the look of the paint, I could believe it.

"car hand washers" from £5.00

Everything except the kitchen sink...
bhoy wonder

Bought new rear pads for my Passat (54 Plate). Was trying to change them but could not get the pistons to go back. I think I will need a tool to do this. Can anybody advise as to where I can get this tool and how much it will cost to buy. Read more

I have a clone of this car (B5.5 Passat) and have done this job recently.

The pistons must be wound in with the correct tool. Both are right hand threads. The "cube" tool is useless and is likely to cause damage. Laser tools market a much better one (available from GSF) which works well. Do not allow the old fluid to go back into the ABS system or master cylinder.

Just spent 3 weeks driving about in Australia in a car that I rented - a Mitsubishi 380 SX.

I am pretty sure that these are not available anywhere in Europe but I am wondering what comes close.

Really enjoyed driving it and was extremely comfortable. The only snag for anybody who lives in the UK was the 3.8 litre V6.

To buy out there, you are looking at about AUD 35,000 (which looks like GBP 15 - 17,000) which in my books it a lot of car for the money.

One option is to import one to the UK, but (aside from all the issues with import alone) I will bet that the corrosion protection for cars out there is nothing compared to what we get for cars built to UK spec. I dont even want to start thinking of parts availability...

"Australians are more sophisticated than Americans"

Like we didn't know that already.

It was good while I was out there but I will be leaving it alone for sure. As if I could afford to run it anyway!!!

Question Megane Clutch
TheOilBurner

I've got a 55 plate Megane (pre-facelift) with a 2.0 VVT petrol engine. Had it about a week and the clutch is very heavy IMO. The Renault dealer we bought it from had a mechanic check it out and says there is no problem, and my own personal experiments from hopping into several other new and nearly new Meganes show that the 2.0 petrols tend to be a mixed bag, some light, some heavy.

To be honest, I can't believe I didn't notice it on the test drive, although it's only unbearable in heavy traffic. It's so bad I dread driving the car and the sole of my left foot is developing a dull ache already.

Do I have grounds to reject the car under the Sale of Goods Act? Bear in mind that the clutch weight on the 2.0 petrols appears very inconsistent, even on showroom cars. One I tried was about the same as my car, others much lighter.

Or, do I have to grin and bear it, sell the car and put it down to experience? Read more

LOL @ Galaxy ;) Thanks for the replies all!

It sounds very much like if there is a fix, my best bet would be to get a clutch specialist to have a play and see if they could fit a replacement of a better design.

It seems like it would be difficult to prove it's faulty, if it is at all.

Next time I'll insist I test drive in the conditions that I normally drive in, and not some quiet, pleasant country lanes! D'oh!

Cheers!

I've just come by this car. The gear change movement of lever seems a little stiff, but otherwise OK. Do I need to oil something? The car's done 162K miles. Read more

Victorbox

You can carefully lift up all around the edge of the gear lever gaiter to release it & apply white grease or similar to ball joint at base of lever and then apply a general purpose grease to the rods & linkages in the engine bay right through to the top of the gearbox to see if this helps. You can even change the gearbox oil at this high mileage to make a difference.

Hi Guys,
I need a med/large family car with a budget of £3500-£4000
Priorities are - reliability, fuel economy, Comfort.
My shortlist with my concerns is:
Honda accord - Running costs too high?
Vectra (02-05) - Reliability/build quality?
Mondeo - Reliability?
Toyota Avensis - Dull to drive?

If i went for the mondeo or Vectra, what are the chances of it reaching its 10th birthday without picking up large repair bills, ie Clutch/suspension.
I can get more car for my money with the Ford or Vauxhall but would it be money well spent in the long term? Read more

2.0 petrol Mondeo, but pay peanuts as the current model runs out, Other than possibly insurance, I can't see that the 1.8 would be any cheaper to run.

Hi
Whilst driving my MK3 1.4 Astra I noticed a strong smell of burning rubber, figured it wasn't me must have been another car passing, a few miles later I go to use the brakes to find the pedal goes straight to the floor.... (thankfully it wasnt an emergancy!) The brakes appeared to return though they are now very noisey espeicually from the rear drums! Managed to get home without it happening again accept when I got out of the car the burning rubber smell was really strong, was coming from the near side rear arch area.
The brakes have been squealing alot lately and the front pads were done last week for the MOT/Service.

Obviously I am guessig its the brakes, could this be a pricey repair?

Thanks! Read more
