R reg mondeo verona 1.8 h/b - mondeo lover
hi all,
i have now got my old mondeo back from the garage after so many problems with the one i bought from them. ( see my last post)
anyway..................

i have a R reg 1.8 mondeo verona (zetec) engine. the few probs are minor i think so any advice would be gratefully recieved. firstly.........i drive about 15 miles to work in the morning and it doesnt seem to heat up , the temp gauge is showing the needle just over the white cold block, but i still get nice warm air in the car?????.
secondly........for a 1.8 it doesnt seem very quick at all, i have to take the revs upto 3500-4000 to get it motoring, when i put my foot down like this sometimes it will jerk / hesitate. thirdly........ even if i drive it sensibly (slow) it seems to be using a lot of fuel.
i have no clues to what might be causing the obove so any help would be gratfully recieved as was the last people who helped me.
thanks
kevin.

1.8 needs revving, even in the lighter Mk2. How much fuel is a lot?

hi micky, on a rough guess i would say i get about 50 miles to a 10er.

You need to measure full to empty a couple of times for accurate mpg.

IIRC, the Mk2 has two coolant temp sensors, one for the ECU and one for the temp gauge, suggest change sensors (don't overtighten), has the car been serviced recently? Is the idle stable at approx 850 rpm?

The two websites linked to should provide most of your answers.

hi micky.
yes mate the car has just been serviced, cambelt, tensioners, plugs, oil n filter, air filter, fuel filter.
sometimes the car doesnt do the unstable idle thing, but when it does it goes from about 800/850rpm ish down to about 200rpm. ish then back up and down again and so on ....... i have also noticed that there is somesort of hesitation when i accelorate, it tends to hesitate when i am accelorating and i can feel it hesitating when im driving along at the same speed. could this be linked.? as for stable revs it generaly sits at about 750-800rpm
i have just changed the thermostate and the car now seems to be opperating at normal temp, insted of sitting on the top of the cold block it now sits on the O or R of NORMAL. so i think thats sorted. as regards tp the fuel consumption i will monitor it.
any more help on the obove would be great.
cheers micky

See Mad Mole for Mondeo idle problems

www.btinternet.com/~madmole/Reference/Idle.html

Idle Speed Control Valve (or IACV) must be next on the list.

Plug leads changed recently? If not, then fit a good set. Fuel consumption should drop now that the engine is reaching the correct operating temp.

hi,
just to let you know that cleaning the obove seemed to work and changed the ht leads, ( i think). it doesnt do the funny idle thing now, but what i have noticed is that when im slowing down for a roundabout , junction etc etc, and i put my foot on the clutch untill im round the corner, the revs just go straight down to about 200rpm. before it used to stay up around 1000-1200rpm then slowly come down. any suggestions.

i will let you know if the hesitations whilst accelerating have been cured later aswell, i only fitted the new leads tonight ( tuesday ).
thanks
kevin.

There is a speed sensor that's supposed to signal to the ECU to hold the revs up when the car is moving, Also a sensor for the power steering that performs a similar function.

hi micky,
cheers for that, if you have any other info on them that would be gratfully received.
