Try this at home
After a long day at the office got back in the car for the 1.25 hour commute home along the M25. Place the mobile into the handfree kit and drove off. After 5 mins phone stops working and dies completely.
Result =
No phone calls to recieve on the way home
No phone calls to make on the way home
Chill out music to enjoy
A drive home I actually remember and concetrated on

I had forgotten how nice it is to have a little me time whilst driving and concentrating on the driving. I got home far more chilled than normal. Now my new mobile is turned off occasionally and nothing bad happens!!!
Try it and see what happens to you

A colleague requires a new (or reconditioned), Crankshaft for a 1980 Shadow II. Has been quoted megabucks, but will not part with ££easily. Far too canny. Any assistance out there boys?

My VR6 has finally given up on me. So looking to replace it with something nippy- well quite fast.
It could be a vw or an audi or a mini i guess. 40mpg at least, 130bhp at least too. All for £10k

I agree - you can get a nearly new Fabia vRs for £10,000. Try one, and also the aforementioned SEAT, and see which you like. You'd have to go for an older Golf or Audi for the same performance.

Am having to replace this on a 1.8 petrol. Does anyone know if it comes out easier from the top or the inner wheel arch.

I would think that as the zafira is based on an Astra, then out the top is the answer. When removing the alternator from the engine, unbolt the bottom bracket from engine block & leave attached to alternator.hth

Hi all!

We're having problems with our immobiliser/alarm remote control pad - frequent problems arming and disarming alarm and engine leading to alarm going off!!

Local dealer states the control pad is at fault - replacement cost for control pad is £50........except additional programming/diagnostics for key coding whacks the total price up to just over £150!!

Is there an alternative avenue we can go down to save money?

Many thanks in advance!!

Very useful information Doc - thank you very much.

I've checked out the website and it looks like it may well be able to save us a good few quid!!

Very much appreciated!!

My Mondeo TDCI 2.0 (2002) automatic gearbox, with 90.000 miles, when warm, (at normal working temperature), around 60 / 70 MPH enters "safety mode", (the glow plug lights) and 9 out of 10, a few seconds later, the engine shuts off. I stop, restart the car and everything is ok ! and the problem will repeat...
The Delphi guys and the Ford dealership here in Portugal could not find the problem. The last one told me the common rail pump had too much pressure and told me a new pump had to be fitted, but they were not 100 % sure!
Any one had a similar problem?

Something similar happened with my 2002 1.8 Focus TDCi which turned out to be the IMV valve controlling the common rail pressure - threw up similar fault codes as well. Like yours, the car would drive along fine and then without warning, the glow plug light would flash, shortly followed by going into limp mode and then cutting out altogether. The IMV valve was replaced (late October passed) and had no problems since.

Hi Guys

I have a 406 estate, W reg and HDI 90 engine
I have 2 questions concerning the display panel.
Recently I have started to get a warning light I havent seen before. It is to the right of the panel, immediately above the temp guage, next to the fog lamp lights. It looks like it could represent fuel or liquid as there seems to be a couple of wavy lines in a tank. I live on a hill and it only appears when the engine is cold, usually for as long as I am going up the hill. Once I level off it vanishes. I cant find anything in the Haynes manual about it so if some one can enlighten me I may not have to worry too much - there is nothing worse than not knowing what a light means.
The 2nd question concerns the digital display in the centre. There is a "spanner" which I am sure is linked to oil changes etc and I believe it can be reset by a combination of the 2 reset buttons on the set into the panel.I have tried every combination I can think of but can't crack it. Could someone please tell me how to reset it.
Thanks for your advice and help Read more

If it is just wavy lines in a "tank", it would probably be the engine coolant tank level is low. The fact that it goes out on level ground shows that it is only down a little. If you top it up, make sure that you add antifreeze, it's going to be cold this week!
If the wavy lines also have two "jets of water" pointing up, it's the screenwash level.

I am the owner of a 1999 passat tdi estate. Like the car a lot and it has been pretty reliable, though driving it has recently become a frustrating experience as the car has seem to have lost use of turbo and struggles to get going. acceleration is very slow and I can't get the rev counter to 4000 in any gear higher than 2nd. going uphill there is a significant loss of power. Any ideas, readers?
