tdi passat estate with no go! - senor
I am the owner of a 1999 passat tdi estate. Like the car a lot and it has been pretty reliable, though driving it has recently become a frustrating experience as the car has seem to have lost use of turbo and struggles to get going. acceleration is very slow and I can't get the rev counter to 4000 in any gear higher than 2nd. going uphill there is a significant loss of power. Any ideas, readers?

Is there any black smoke during these situations?
Can you hear a hissing sound which denotes a boost leak?
You really need to have the fault codes read and to capture and analyse live data.
It could be the MAF, N75 or simply a boost leak or lots of other things.

hi ashok,

no black smoke or hissing sound....

is it easy to get fault codes read?

can any garage do it?

cheers,

As an educated guess, I'd suspect the N75 valve, it is electrically operated and acts as a valve to control the vacuum which operates the turbocharger's state. It is about £75 for the part and easy to fit.

I would try and find a VW specialist, for diagnostics, as they tend to have better VW-specific systems such as VAG COM.

Sounds very similar to when my '99 Sport Passat misbehaved and it turned out to be the air flow meter although I would bow to Ashok's greater knowledge

Ashok - why do you ask about black smoke? Mine still performs fine but any strong acceleration leaves behind embarassing amounts of black smoke. Have used Redex to little effect. Any ideas?

black smoke might point to egr valve problems.

maf problems can manifest themselves in many strange ways - but usually more hesitation/uneven rather than not going past a given engine speed. N75 sounds like the culprit. There are 'uprated' units which are supposed to boost performance - never fitted one so dont know if they actually stack up.

audi-sport.net and tdiclub are good sources of info.

Had this problem today with my mk3 golf tdi after fitting a new battery, scanned it with vagcom and 2 faults were logged.

Fuel stop solenoid and coolant temp sender, both use the same multiplug. Cleared the faults and it now goes as it should again.

Time will tell if its a perminent cure. ;O)

Unplug MAF and if there is a slight improvement then that's probably the culprit. It was on mine. Good luck, Ianden.

With my brother in laws Passat it was simply a hose that was a loose air pipe connection.

Had MAP sensor go on a Passat TDI. 130bhp Passat with absolutely no go, struggled at every incline. New sensor fitted and things came alive.
