Anyone know just when Ford started using the oval-with-handwritten-script logo? I mean when they started using it on badges, steering wheel centres and hubcaps on their UK models. I'm sure my dad's Consul back in the fifties had some sort of logo with five-pointed stars on it and I don't recall his Corsair in the late sixties as having any blue ovals, but my memory might be playing tricks. Has anyone tried fitting these magnets onto oil filters and then cut the can open at an oil change and seen any startling benefits?
I mean these plastic coated high intensity magnets that wrap round the oil filter can and are claimed to trap all the ferrous swarf, rather like the magnetic drain plug used to do in a Mini.
Are they any good, or just a gadget for the gulible? Read more
I wouldn't buy one, but it could be interesting getting a strong magnet out of a loudspeaker and sticking it on the sump plug.
If it has bits on, your engine is doomed, but more interestingly, it could draw bits of iron off the crankshaft sensor, so you don't have to get even dirtier trying to replace that....
hi i have a citroen zx diesel m reg with only 70,000 miles on the clock but it is now taking a min to start when cold any one have any ideas ?????????

"how hard is it to change the glowplugs ???????"
Depends on whether it's a turbo or not - the 1.9D is much easier. However, I had big troubles with my Sister's 1.9D over christmas.... see here for the tale of woe www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=210...6 fortunately the repair is holding up so far.
Here's a post about changing the plugs on a Xantia TD www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=206...5 The ZX TD is much the same, but you need to remove the intercooler not the turbo piping, and you may find it necessary to remove the fuel feed to the injection pump. The most important thing to watch out for is the coolant pipe coming out of the head above No 4 plug - it's very easy to break!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
Well do they, or is it a con? If they do, which ones are good and which ones aren't? They seem to vary on eBay from £115 for original Fuelsaver, to a few quid for some magnetic piece of mystery that you find on market stalls...
If they do work and reduce emissions, why doesn't Gordon Brown get them on every new car?

Back in the days of the Suez crisis(1957),I was an apprentice and we purchased all the "fuel-saving" devices that flooded onto the market-about 20.One matched the standard figures-all the others made the consumption worse and frequently made the performance worse as well.

Hi - I have a 1996 Peugeot 306 non-turbo diesel with low mileage and I'd like to treat it well... Is it worth adding an oil treatment when I change my oil (which i do every 6 months)? If so, which ones are good? It must be hard to prove, but I'm open to anecdotal evidence from you lot....
Ever seen the little oiled cogs on the counter at your local parts supplier? You turn the 'normal oil' cog and you can see the oil dripping off the cogs, but then you turn the cogs with the American oil treatment and its all gloopy and sticks on the cogs.... So my question is, does this stuff just increase the viscosity of oil?
Any input appreciated! Yes, I have read the authoritative post on oil viscosity at the top of the board...
Thanks,

Thanks - the link was great and the verdict as you say - oil and filter is all that's needed.
Does any one know what is going on with this company, Internet based car dealer that I believe is in administration, unable to get in contact with anyone since mid December. Read more
Take out a sub to 192.com - BD Parker is listed as a director of two companies. You will also find a home address for Mr Peace, and possible Parker. Search on their first name plus surname and Staffordshire. 100 credits (one per set of details revealed) will cost you £35.00 - could be a cheap investment.
i have just been watching the bbc watchdog programme, and was rather concerned to hear there is, if watchdog are to be believed a quite serious failing of the clio mk11 bonnet latches which have led to some rather serious accidents due to the latch failing and allowing the bonnet to open, anyone here have a more details ? ABS warning lights above about 20 mph, but resets each cycle of the ignition, and this has been diagnosed as requiring ABS pump replacement. Jaguar quote £975ish plus VAT so have sourced a used item for £125 with 3 month warranty. However, it has occurred to me to question whether this could just be the fuse - easily overlooked under the r/h heelboard in the back!! The wheel sensors have been checked, and this diagnosis arrived at courtesy of the main dealer's diagnostic computer - that's what worries me! Read more
Many thanks again for your assistance, very much appreciated! Love NZ - so nearly took a post in Nelson, loved it so. (Came 2nd in interviews!!) Envy your Jaguar VDP - the V12 is awsome, isn't it?
Battery on parents car (Proton 1.5 'thing') died overnight, it's all sorted now, bought and fitted a new one for them.
But trying to start it from my car using jump leads still resulted in it turning over slowly and not firing.
This was with the battery out on charge, with jump leads from my car directly onto the Proton's battery leads.
When a new battery was fitted it fired up first time.
Why would it not start when connected to my car? (Tried off and engine running) Read more
I had a pair of cheap jump leads years ago that were OK for occasional use on my bike. When I got a Granada 2.8 - oh, the joy - I used them and the insulation melted in a haze of smoke.
Bought some decent ones and they have lasted till now (15 years)

>>I have several photos in my copy of "Ford Cortina 1600E" that very clearly show the Ford oval on the rear of the front wing just above cill level.
So certainly in 1967 the oval was in use in the UK.
It seems to be on the earlier models with full chrome Rostyle wheels but not on the revised version ( like I had)
It was also on the earlier Lotus-Cortina.
