December 2006
Hello
I have an Audi 80 2.0E, registered in 1993.
It was fitted with a new timing belt at 113,283 miles in June 2003.
The car has been used fairly intermittently for the last couple of years.
My uncle borrowed it this summer, and the timing belt failed at 135,701 miles.
The belt only covered 22,000 miles but the time period was just over three years.
The guy who fitted it at 113K says I have no claim. He claims the guarantee period would only be a year.
Since belts are meant to be replaced every 60k miles, I find this claim of a one-year guarantee ludicrous, since very few people do such mileages in a year.
Luckily, there was no damage done to the engine, and a simple replacement of the belt was all that was needed. The bill came to £163.
Should I pursue this for a refund? Read more
I'm about to purchase the above 3 year old vehicle. Full Merc SH and one owner from new on the plus side, but "out of warranty" and high mileage to consider too.........do any of you have experience of problems with these cars / engines ?
Any other advice also gratefully received ( e.g. should I be getting the auto transmission fluid changed at this mileage ? ) .
Many thanks. Read more
The deed is done.........and all is going very well thus far........a very comfortable, powerful, capacious estate car in Tealite Blue. Merc have offered me an extended warranty ( up to 100K miles ) which looks tempting, notwithstanding the "wear and tear" clauses in the small print.
Thanks for all the replies.
Cheers,

Hi, bought a Mitsubishi Colt recently. Every now again it cuts out at junctions and needs restarting. Sometimes it just 'nearly' cuts out but 'recovers'. Its a 1.6 16v 4G92 engine if that helps.
Now and again the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on too (but goes out after a couple of minutes), so are the problems related? I've not done anything to the car yet, so not assessed the plugs, dizzy cap etc, but it drives very well with no hesitation on acceleration. So is it a simple clean of throttle body, or something more complex (idle valve etc).
Oh, the heater doesn't get very hot either if anybody has any ideas!
Thanks in advance. Read more
Thanks Aprilia, I'll have a look when the weather gets nicer. TBH, the car drives great in every way, reponsive, economical etc, just cuts out now and again (once its warmed up), and I only paid £285 for it anyway (the 15" alloys, newish tyres and 11 months MOT are worth that) !
after a few weeks of looking for a 2nd car finally got one today.1997 accord coupe 108k miles with history and loads of receipts, mot'd april07,taxed may07 with 2 previous owners.so any former or current accord owners want to share there tales of joy or woe and any advice they have on this car.thanks Read more
Which engine?
I've had a 92 2 litre coupe for the past nearly four years - bought it as a temporary stand in and it has just kept going. It's now the shopping car or for use when the weather's bad.
Taken it from 72 to 116k and it runs well still, uses no oil and does steady 35-6mpg no matter how it's driven. It's a switchable auto by the way.
Everything works and it's as clean as a whistle, helped no doubt by the fact that it lives with us in rural France, where they rarely salt the roads!
The only time it has ever disgraced itself was when it ate its distributor bearing - the new dizzy was eye-wateringly expensive but arrived in 24 hours and only took 20 minutes to fit! The only time any Honda I've owned - and I've had many since 1966 - has ever had a mechanical failure that wasn't wear and tear.
Just keep it serviced.
Currently, our fine weather car is a 2.2 litre vtec Prelude. Strangely, when I've been using the Prelude for a while I am always happy to get the Accord out again...

Vauxhall Corsa 1.3CDTI Design 3-dr, 2005/54, 127k miles £1,850p
Wonder if this was a "pool" car or some poor sod has done 127k miles in just over 2 years in a Corsa! No offence to Corsas, but doing 2500 miles a week, I would be wanting something a bit bigger and more comfortable!

Hi thank you for your help i think going for the resistor pack, sounds like thats it A tomorrows jod. Many thanks
Hope someone can help....think I'm about to lose the plot. Bought 1.9 Stylance pre reg in Aug '06 & it's been in a dealers in Glasgow 4 times with an intermittent judder through the pedals & steering when I get to 55 mph- above that the sensation stops. Basically, the workshop can't find the cause.....thought it might be the bearings & on advice of the technical dept at SEAT, have changed one & rotated the tyres. Surprise surprise, it's still doing it. The dealer don't think the problem''s "too bad"(in other words, put up with it) & say that SEAT have no reports worldwide of this intermittent fault. Called SEAT today who weren't much help either.
Is there anyone out there how's heard of this problem or has any suggestions?!
Thanks

Going in a very doddy direction? ;-) Read more
My theory is that this was done deliberately by the drivers after a spat with a manager.
"Sorry we were late we got lost"
"Lost with SatNav? Ho ho, do you think I'm stupid, you must use the sat nav everytime and follow the instructions"
"OK"
Most of us have been there at one time or another, well at least I have ...
You had the timing belt replaced.
The person who did the job put a 12 month guarantee on the work / parts fitted.
This work & the parts they fitted worked fine for the 12 month guarantee period & carried on for another 2 & a bit years on top of that.
Timing belt has now failed at over 3 years since it was replaced & hasn't done any damage, you have been very lucky it didn't bend any valves.
Your now talking about withholding payment for a job done on another car, They are within there rights to not release your car back to you & also charge you for storage.
You would be laughed out of any court in the land.
oldman has been in the trade a very long time, he has been there, done that, got the t-shirt to prove it. So you didn't like oldmans humour but at the end of the day he does speak a lot of sense.
