Am I the only one being plagued by these adverts on this site? Every time I click on anything this, advert appears first.
I know HJ has to have the revenue but does this advert have to be so intrusive?

Hi Guys,
Got up this morning and drove to work as normal in the Mondeo, when I got out of the car at work I noticed a really bad burning smell and saw steam coming off the rear drivers side wheel, upon closer inspection I noticed that the brake disk had started to groove a little. A friend in work had a look and said my handbrake isn't fully releasing for some reason? just wondered if anyone else had ever had this problem and is it expansive to sort out :)
Thanks
Lee
PS its a new shape mondeo X reg onwards and has done 46,000 miles.

Is perhaps the handbrake adjusted such that there is too little movement of the lever and that this results in too little free play in the mechanism when the lever is released? I like to be able to move the lever 5 notches without using undue force so as to ensure that it will fully release the brake in the off position.

Hey guys,
trying to fix a problem on my friends car - i have had a look through past problems but not found anything of use, hence a new topic.
Unfortunately i have not been in it but am assured that the following is correct:
The car seems to simply idle erratically whilst sat at lights, hot or cold. It accelerates as well as can be expected there is no loss of power or excessive engine noise. I have a little expereince with petrol engines but not as much as with diesels. Any ideas?
All help appreciated in advance,

Just spoke to a happy mechanic at Vauxhall who suggested a number of cheap options, however, it being a diesel i am not sure if they all apply. EPR vavle inparticular but from my own reading MAF sensor or just resetting the ECU.
The problem seems to be a much slighter version of many others petrol problmes, is this usual?
Also is it possible to get yourself an ECU reading machine cheap anywhere or download software for your laptop at all? Would be easy.
If the car were a petrol there would be loads of possibilitites it's just being a diesel appears to have made it harder.
All help appreciated, Ta,
Alex
I'm thinking of changing from my old C class 220d Merc to the equivalent BMW. Which is the one I should look out for -used from a non main dealer. Read more
Got a lift home in an E46 320d BMW tonight. Swift, smooth and surefooted. Someone said on another thread that they were nothing special, but I'd still prefer one to a lot of other cars.
My parents have not long owned a 2002(my) 2.0vvti rav 4 auto.On average driving the vehicle fails to return more than 23-24mpg! allowing for it being an auto surely this can't be right?Has anybody else any experience of this or any suggestions?

Sounds about right my old saab99 auto would do 22mpg in summer 18mpg in winter
In Birch Services yesterday(motoring link) I was walking across the car park when a Punto pulled up beside me and the driver asked if I spoke Italian.Answering in the negative he proceeded in English, telling me the company he worked for had given him samples of Armani jackets he wanted to get rid of.Thinking he was trying to flog them off,and not being an Armani type of person,I declined. As I walked away he called 'but I wanta to give them away'.
Upon returning from the facilities I noticed he was still driving around trying to find a 'punter',but no takers, perhaps they had all been watching 'The Real Hustle'the previous night.Eventually he gave up and drove out through the service road.So was I being overly suspicious?I can't see a scam so maybe he was being genuinely philanthropic at this time of year. Yer pays Armani and yer takes yer choice.....
I just wondered.........................
I've seen it lots of times, but finally decided I need to know! I was following a bus this morning, and there was an irregular bright white flash from a pair of lamps mounted adjacent to the rear lamp cluster. The almost looked like camera flash, but not particularly intense. It occurred to me to wonder if the car in front (and no, it wasn't me!!!) was getting close enough to trigger some form of rear facing camera - but that sounds rather improbable, and I don't think the flash was bright enough to act as a camera flash.
Any idea what the purpose is??? Read more
Could it be some of ligtinng or CCTV to take piccies of cars in bus lanes?

Have you ever had any experence on c/locking problems?
What i see is:
Sometimes it locks !!
Sometimes it doesn't unlock !! (drives me mad when i dead lock the car as you can't open the door for ages as lifting the locking knob does work)!!
Sometimes the interior light doesn't come on when the door is opened !!
This is only on both back doors and drives me crazy, is it a wiring loom problem
Anyone else seen this before??
Thanks for taking a look

Am i stupid to be considering these things, selling the Focus and replacing with:
a) 98S Alfa Romeo 156 1.8 TS, 90,000 miles. £1,500.
b) 99S Rover 420 GSDi, 88,000 miles. £950.
Here's the thing, I love my Focus, but a car is just a car (possibly the worst place to say this)...and the value of the Focus (offered £2,500 by a local as a car for his wife whose just learnt to drive...) could be put to better use (like possible deposit on mortgage). The Alfa is really only there cause it's SO gorgeous, and I was shocked at the cheapness. I know for me, running costs would be too much and it'd breakdown 15 times a year...right? (can you tell I want to be talked into the Alfa?) Another option is the fully loaded 400. Mum had one identical, but a shade older back in the day - leather, a/c cd changer, fast, economical, never missed a trick. Not a thrilling drive, but adequate she said, and I really can't imagine insurance being a problem on a diesel Rover...
Based on the fact I want a change, and that that £££ could be used better, do either of these make sense. Both seem really tempting, and that 400 is a lot of cash for the money - provided it doesn't require any maintenance (would that be expensive on a Rover?) Read more
Birdman, thats a great concept but with modern electronic engine managment even the most competent 'diy' mecanic is limited to the most basic repairs.

You hear that sound? That's the sound of pennies dropping inside the heads of Internet Explorer users around the world. I wonder what innovations IE8 will introduce when it is released in 2011? We'll know in the Spring I guess, when Firefox 3 appears.
