This is merely an observation rather than a discussion point , as it has been discussed to death before.
However, coming out of Coatbridge today, on the stretch of 30mph dual carriageway that is renowned for mobile speed trap, all the cars were crawling along at 29mph prompted by the flashes of headlights from the opposing cars.
Now as I approach the fluorescent copper with the hand held gun (noticed they have a red LED that lights up when in use), I realised that around me, without a a word of a lie, there were:
3 drivers not wearing seatbelts
2 cars with kids not strapped in to any seats
1 car with front foglights on (7.30pm, broad daylight)
1 guy on his phone, though he did put it down to below the steering wheel while he passed.
and 2 cars with illegal number plate font.
When I got to the roundabout at the end of the road, 3 cars had defective brakelights as well.
Not a single one of them got stopped by the police.. Read more
I have just bought an immaculate 1993 Ford Orion as a runabout.
The rear wheel bearing is obviously shot, is replacing this the straightforward job I hope it to be?!?
I have bought a bearing kit. In all the jobs I have done including engine rebuilds and rebuilding kit cars I have never changed a wheel bearing!

Many thanks oldman. Just what the doctor ordered!
I wish the problems with my Astra dti were that easy to sort :(

Do car adverts actually work on people or are we pre-conditioned with our own views anyway ??
The reason I ask is I like the C4 ice skating car etc and also the latest Honda impossible dreams ad where the guy riding/driving now has an England flag attached to everything including the f1 car and boat.
But I find the VW ads - Golf is £11995 - amazing but true etc - totally annoying and misleading.
Is it me - i.e. why should I be amazed at the price when the cars are actually nothing special and never score highly in an surveys.
Yet I also like Audi ads so I it's not VAG bashing.

>Give me Barry Scott and Cillit Bang any day (clear, refreshingly simple and a demonstration of what it does)!<
I don't know much about responding to ads for new cars - last time I bought one the publicity was only in motoring magazines. But in France the product mentioned above is pronounced Silly Bong and on the rare occasions I catch the TV ad I fall about laughing.
And thanks Lud, as ever, for the smile. I thought I was the only one who had picked up that one...
firstly i would like to say hi.
vehicle in question is a peugeot 306
now my problem is that i have which can probably be best described as a graunching sound like something is trying to be ripped out. this seems to happen only when pulling away from rest with any sort of more than average acceleration.
please anyone with ideas of what it could be, please reply i will be greatful.
thanks. Read more
only seems to be when pulling away from rest up to when you change gear
My timing belt is due to be replaced in 10,000 miles and about to travel from the midlands to norfolk
Theres no oil contamination on the belt
Ive got no time to change the belt

Not at 320 quid a pop it isn't, especially when it'll do over 80k with no problems.

Just been putting a new radio in my sister's Mk3 Astra, only to discover that the prat that owned the car before her had been too lazy to buy a wiring adaptor and instead hacked his way through all the wires at the back of the harness, splicing together the ones he needed.
However, none of the colours correspond to standard radio wiring colours, and we can't find the 12V feed from the ignition. There are only two wires in the bunch that look capable of carrying sufficient current, and they're the ground (brown? WHY?!) and permanent live (red).
Not only that, he's hacked off at the base the wires that drive the external display, so we haven't got a hope of ever getting that to work with a Vauxhall radio. Thankfully we bought a cheap aftermarket one.
Does anyone have a guide showing what each colour corresponds to? Desperately needed, as we have no idea where the 12V feed from the ignition is. Previous owner simply put a 25A fuse in the permanent live and spliced the two wires together so the radio had permanent power.
ALSO - don't know if this should be in another thread - the 1.7TD engine has an irritating whine. Is this common with all Astra turbo-diesels of this vintage?
Cheers,
David. Read more
Nah, you don't need to be stressed for mindless violence. :)
Yep, the radio has inline fuses on both 12V feeds, although I managed to accidentally take out the 25A fuse powering it by forgetting to switch the meter back from the 10A shunt. D'oh. All working now, more or less.
Not sure if this is a technical matters question, but what's the best way to repair car seats ?
My Skoda is in great nick, apart from a couple of bits on the front seats - a small tear in the passenger seat base, and a bit of scuffing on both - looks like a bit of wear on both, but only in a couple of places, so it looks like the fabric section could simply be replaced - anyone any experience of this ? My R reg. Almera has a knocking from the drivetrain. It sounds just like a shot CV joint (I had one go on a Cavalier) but the symptoms occur when driving in a straight line as well as going around corners.
I have jacked up the car and can?t feel any play in the wheel bearings.
The knocking is audible at lower speeds when accelerating or under engine braking in the first two gears upto 2500 rpm. When over 2500 rpm the knocking starts to ?balance out? and becomes a rumble, in the higher gears there may be a rumble but road, wind and engine noise are more predominant.
In hot weather the problem seemed to clear up after 5 or 10 minutes driving, in cooler weather it might take 30 minutes the problem to go quiet.
I started to suspect a gearbox driveshaft bearing so removed the gearbox filler plug and a trickle of oil came out, so it wasn?t low on gearbox oil. I emptied the gearbox oil and the magnet on the drain plug had some swarf attached to it but it didn?t seem excessive (how much is excessive?). I refilled the gearbox with oil as described in the Haynes manual. No change.
The clutch works OK and gear changes are as good as all the front wheel drive cars that I?ve had.
Does anybody know what the problem might be?
If it is the gearbox, what should I expect to pay for a fitted recon job? I bought the car a couple of years ago for £900 and have so far been impressed with it?s economy and reliability.

The problem has been getting slightly worse. You can now hear the gearbox rumbling whilst in neutral at tickover, when I depress the clutch (disengages drive to the gearbox)the rumble disappears.
I took the car to my local branch of Mr. Clutch who also diagnosed gearbox driveshaft bearings, they quoted a fitted replacement recon gearbox at about £650. I got a similar quote from a local transmission workshop and they also quoted me about £400 to repair my current gearbox but I suspect that once they have it in pieces they might discover that it is beyond economical repair.
The car is probably not worth £650 so I am going to get rid and get another car.
I have just renewed my annual European Breakdown cover with WorldWide Travel Insurance Services Ltd. , but it's a Green Flag Policy - yes, good old Green Flag and I couldn't find anything wrong with it at £69 - bargain..
£69 is the cost for a whole year (max 45 days any one trip) for a car less than 10 years old. Read more
I am always amazed at how much people pay in the UK for roadside assistance compared with the prices in Germany. For example, here ACE or Auto Club Europa, has an annual membership fee of ? 59 (just over forty pounds), which includes Europe wide protection.
BIG
A policeman with a speed camera is MEASURED by the number of speeding motorists caught.
He is not measured by the number of other criminals caught even if they are breaking numerous laws.
If you don't measure it, we don't control it is the police motto.
Blame the politicians....who control the police. We taxpayers do not. The Police Authority is of course unlected.
Rant over....
Seriously I was stopped in 1993 with a defective rear light (cracked lens) by a policeman looking out for such incidents at a well nown local problem spot. Never see any police there now as our "local" police are no longer local.
Lorry drivers on phone when driving. 50mph in 30mph zone when passing a car over a zebra crossing with a pedestrian on it?
Police not interested.. Not measured..
The law on mobile phones has been passed making car use when phoning illegal. Enforcement? Whatsthat?
Perhaps fewer laws and enforcement of key existing ones would be a good idea..
(But no we're going to reform the Justice System - again..:-(
