I'm looking at 'nice' second-hand japanese cars,5 or 6 years old, and like the Honda Accord coupe (3 litre ones are quite cheap where I live)and Lexus IS200s. They're both suprisingly cheap to insure (not much more than my Punto believe or not)and I'm willing to take the hit on petrol costs as my mileage isn't great (about 15000 kms per year).

Does any one have any comments on long term costs for servicing and repairs. (I'm thinking of Alfa-Romeo threads where 156's have been described as 'bottomless money pits - no offence to you Alfa-ists).

Basically, I don't have much money, but I can buy and insure one of these relativley cheaply - it's what comes next I'm worried about. I've only ever owned ^basic^cars, and I have a fear of going to a main dealer to have a widget changed and being told 'that's only 10 grand sir, cheap at the price I'd say'.

Anyone have experience of these cars getting older and taken to high mileages ??

Thanks

Hi Everyone

My sister is currently using her motorbike to communte to work from Brighton to Redhill daily.

Does anyone on this post commute this route daily either by car or motorbike.

I am just wondering how safe this route is. I know a lot of accidents can be 'wrong place at wrong time', but from peoples experience how safe will she be.

I always lecture her to ride safely, not to take risks, take your time and she has completed the bike safe course. Obviously this will make her safer, but what else can I recommend. I always say to stick at 70-80 mph based on engine ware, but secretly it is just to keep safe.

Train is not an option because of cost.

I don't want to be seen as an over protective brother, but I am just wondering if this is a safe road to use in the long term.

Thanks everyone for your help. Read more

I have not much to offer here other than to endorse the previous comments re safe riding and to say that your sister is very fortunate in having such a caring brother.

Peugeot 306 1.9 diesel no fuel coming from fuel injection pump when turning engine over. Is it the pump, the immobiliser or some other fault? Does anyone have any ideas, know how to check or had a similar problem? Read more

mjsracer

Hiya,

I had a prob just like this, the nice man from the AA said that i had a air lock in the pump itself, this can be caused just by a build up for crap within it, we cured it by basicly tow-starting it as this forced the blockage out, i advise using the diesel engine cleaners that you can pick up from your local petrol station that you mix in with your fuel. hope this is of help.

Is yet another irritating and possibly dangerous game starting to catch on among chav drivers? I saw two examples of tailgating (on a two-lane road) followed by overtaking, then nudging left to threaten the offside wing. Calculated to create panic or road-rage I suppose. Is it common? Read more

>I was hit from behind when I came to a stop at a junction. The bodyshop said the damage to my car would probably have been much greater if I hadn't had a towbar. The towbar was a swan-neck type and it punched quite a hole in the front of the other car. After exchanging names and addresses it was very satisfying being able to drive away with nothing worse than a damaged bumper, leaving the other driver looking in dismay at the numerous bits of her car that were scattered on the road. I'm a big fan of towbars, even if you don't tow anything.

Ditto in a hire van. An almighty "thwuummpp" at low speed, immediate thought of the £500 hire company excess, a leap out to see the towbar on the Transit 350 had disappeared well into the front of an old Escrote with rusty "coolant" pouring out.

My first comment - "You need to change your coolant, mate".

Nervous twenty-something scruffy youth stammers "your towbar saved you, mate", thinking that my 6ft 2in 17st frame was about to turn him into meat pie filling. It was a white van, after all.

Nope, a minor plastic bumper skidmark on the tow ball, but nothing else. Most satisfying.

would any one know how i can reset the service light in my 04 fiat scudo 2.0jtd Read more

A quick google found that it's the usual way as per a lot of manufacturers. That being,

turn key off, push and hold button on clocks (the trip odometer reset I imagine they're refering to), turn key on still holding button until it counts down to 0 on display.

Hopefully a 2004 Scudo won't be any different to a 2001 model.

I was riding home tonight past the Runcorn junction on the M56, they are replacing the parapet on the viaduct for the next few months, and it looks like specs gantries are going up. Has anyone heard anything about this? The gantry I spotted was about 100 yards past the bottom of the viaduct heading towards Chester. Read more

Hi,

I have to go from York to Bordon tomorrow, setting off from York at 10am, doing a quick collection and coming straight back. This isnt through choice :(

I am intending M1/M25/A3, how bad can I expect the M25/A3 to be? Its a while since I have done this journey, I assume that the eternal M25 widening is complete ? How is the A3 ?

Is there any point waiting out some of the rush hour off the a3 somewhere or should I push on the the M1 first ?

thanks

Yes, as are the virtually identical Pug 107 and Toyota Aygo - made in Eastern Europe (Czech Republic or Slovakia IIRC).
