hi
i have a renault scenic 2002 1.9dci.it has been suggested to me that i should change the fuel filter as it is a probable cause to my jerking at steady speeds then dissapearing on acceleration.it also seems to lack power on the lower end rev range.i have never had to change a fuel filter before or even know any one that has had to.what is the likelyness of this being the prob.the car has only covered 33600 miles and the wrong fuel was put in(previous owner)at 24000 miles, would the filter have not been changed then???also do i need to replace or can i clean with airline at work.
any comments and feedback would be appreiciated

>'worse' car.

Ah, but think of the more exciting things you could run. An audi 90 coupe quattro. an XJS jag. Fun, sub-£1,000 cars that are never (probably) going to cost you as much in maintenance and insurance as your 3k pa budget.

You need to check the £300/month figure - I haven't even used the back of a fag packet regarding the bik tax... some cars with lower emissions will cost you much less tax.

Also have a good read of Polo Girl's recent thread entitled something like 'Should I let my heart rule my head over company car'.

Hi the motor on my air compressor has given up the ghost, it is a single phase 0.75bhp 1750rpm motor, i have been offered a single phase 0.5bhp 2850 motor, i know i can gear down the rpm through using different size pulleys, my question is will using a underpowered motor just mean that it will take longer to fill the receiver or is there something else involved? it has a 200ltr receiver so i don't think it's going to run out on me during use just take longer to fill

cheers

The motor may well stall or at least get very hot before the max pressure switch is satisfied gearing down will help but mat still not be man enaough for the job. I am surprised that it only had a .75 hp motor. Machine mart have some decent replacement motors. Regards Peter

Hello ,i've managed to get the offside driveshaft off the car to change cv joint gaiter,i've also got the joint off the driveshaft to get the gaiter on,problem is getting it back together, the 3 pronged spring clip looks like it should click back into place ,i've got the joint vertical in a vice and trying to line up spring then push driveshaft in, Whats the propper/effective way of doing this, Thanks in advance.Bert Read more

For the difference in price and the hassle involved it's often a damn site easier just to whack a new shaft on instead of just doing the joint.

SWMBO's 1995 306 Sedan was on an all-original exhaust system until recently when the back box was replaced. Today, despite the rest of the system looking visually superb and still shiny the centre section has failed; the stub that comes out of the catalyst is welded to the front face of the centre box and this weld - or more likely the immediately adjacent face on the box - has completely torn out. Sounds mean at idle and has a gorgeous BTCCesque crackle on the overrun, but is unfortunately just loud and boomy under load!

Anyway, the reason for the post: Looking at the amount of rust on the cat casing and that it's now 11 years old, I intend to replace the cat assembly as well as the centre pipe.

I already have the OEM Pug centre box price as a result of enquiring when I replaced the back box, but what is a ballpark price for the cat assembly, please? I leave tomorrow to work abroad so the missus will do the ringing around. Also, OEM or aftermarket for the cat?

TVM.

BTW: 10/10 to Peugeot. Not only did the original system last eleven years but a woven stainless steel retaining strap is fitted between bodyshell and centre section clamp; this strap has not only restrained the now free end of the pipe but has probably also stopped the exhaust manifold flange being broken by leverage. What do people think of unbranded oil, bought 4.4 litre and cost £9.99, manufactured to VW spec. Will these unbranded as good as Duckhams? Read more

My Model Year 2000 Bora's handbook states multigrade high lubricity oils VW500 00 or VW502.00 for petrol engines and multigrade as VW501 0 or API-SF or SG.

Diesel multigrade high lubricity is VW500 00 for tubro diesel engines only in conjuction with specifications VW 505.00 and VW 505.00, suited for unlimited use for all diesel engines.

Mutigrade high lubricity oils according the VW-Norm 502 00 is sutitable for petrol engines, corresponds to the VW norms 501 01 and 500 00, and is particularly suitable for use under difficult operating conditions.

Hi all,

I need a rubber LHM return pipe from the pump to the tank on a 96 Xantia 1.9TD. Any idea of cost for the part? I'll fit it myself. Is there a correct term for this pipe, as I can't seem to find a new one online to order in the UK.

Thanks in advance

Keith

This part is about £100 from a dealer and there are no less than 18 variants so its a good idea to give the VIN number if you order one.

As there is no pressure on this pipe I have heard people use a length of clean garden hose as a temporary measure.

You might want to try www.pleiades.uk.com/ for the part - they are usually a bit cheaper than the dealers.

Are these cars becoming the choice of the middle aged chav?

I've seen loads recently with tons of extra chrome bling bits on them and none of them have looked good. In fact they make your average saxo look appealing! Read more

Re. the site selling add-on bits for PT Cruisers:

Did anyone notice that you can get full spats to cover the rear wheel-arches? Also a dummy spare wheel cover to go on the tailgate that might be useful for keeping a bicycle wheel in!

Since the standard PT Cruiser is no oil painting, I'm not going to weep any tears over people who want to make them look even uglier!

I have a problem with a claim under a Swiftcover comprehensive cover and am interested if anyone else has had any problems claiming.

Just wondered if I am a lone case however.

Please email me through the moderators if you have had any problems.

Where do you find decent but cheap second hand cars any more? Every single one we looked at yesterday (there must have been 20 or 30) was either scratched to bits, rusty or had important trim missing. A passat estate was almost a goer but then I noticed some twonk had clearly stuck something heavy on the roof and had stoved in the sun roof and the rubber surround had rotted and disintegrated. Every other car actually running around on the road of the same age or parked up seemed to be in much better condition. The stuff in car dealers seemed to be total rubbish. Several had missing door mirrors, dents, rust or all over scratches that seemed unusual for 10 year old cars. Would you expect a carina of 10 years old to have a rotting sill, rotten driver's door and orange peel paint? The one half decent car was a rover 400 but the rear seats were too small to fit 3 across comfortably :-/

If the outside was rough then the engine and other bits can't have been cared for or am I wrong in this assumption?

I might be expecting too much for a car costing a grand but there were ones for over £2k that weren't in that much better condition. One place was trying to sell an H reg primera with a front wheel arch which was rotted through and a patch the size of a grapefruit of rust on the rear arch.

Have people stopped looking after their cars these days?

I suspect my Omega would fetch about £1,000 and would be an utter diamond for that much. What that suggests is that you just have to keep looking until the right person is selling the right car.
