Unbranded Semi-Synthetic Oil - Perfection
What do people think of unbranded oil, bought 4.4 litre and cost £9.99, manufactured to VW spec. Will these unbranded as good as Duckhams?

Probably better

Depends where you bought it.

Was it a recognised outlet, motor factors or similar?

Quite a few sell "unbranded" or unknown brand names oil at advantageous prices.

If its an oil to a VW spec, it will be listed by brand, viscosity, and VW standard. Is there a particular application? You might need some pedigree, rather than a counterfeit. Or is it a banger you're feeding oil to? In which case, it doesn't really matter.

The label is Hi-SPEC 10W40. Description: For conventional, multi-valve and turbo-charged petrol engines. High API SL / CF, ACEA A3 -98 and B3 -98 spec.

Not sure what the oil spec means, I don't know anything on oil, apatr from the vicosity.

Bought it from motor factor. If this is good stuff, I can chnage the oil twice a year still only costing £20. Th last time I bought 4.5l Duckhams from Halfords were approx £22 I think.

sounds like a standard 10/40 to me why not go to your vauxhall dealer parts dept and buy the same thing in a 3 for 4 deal in a sealed cardboard box ie 4x4.5 litres for £19 +vat.
better value i think

Just had a look at the carton again, it ahd the following descriptions: Meets VW 500.00, 505.00 (01 / 97), Mb 229.1, BMW Special Oil requirements.

The price you mention for the 4 x 4.5l from Vauxhall dealer is extremely cheap. Are these semi-synthetic ?

yes

Perfection: is your car a VW group car? If so, what oil does the manual require? Beware of oils that say "meets 505.xx" as they are not necessarily tested and approved by VW. If its not a VW etc, their standards are not relevant, but many other makers have their own.

Beware of oils that say .

by VW.

Is that allowed, and if so, how does it work?

505.00 and 500.00 are quite old specifications, used to signify 'high lubricity' oils in the '80s (and early 90s possibly) IIRC

My Model Year 2000 Bora's handbook states multigrade high lubricity oils VW500 00 or VW502.00 for petrol engines and multigrade as VW501 0 or API-SF or SG.

Diesel multigrade high lubricity is VW500 00 for tubro diesel engines only in conjuction with specifications VW 505.00 and VW 505.00, suited for unlimited use for all diesel engines.

Mutigrade high lubricity oils according the VW-Norm 502 00 is sutitable for petrol engines, corresponds to the VW norms 501 01 and 500 00, and is particularly suitable for use under difficult operating conditions.
