artful dodger {P}

On Friday night I saw what must be the latest Chav extra, and feel was probably illegal. It was an extra strip brake light fixed to the rear window, just under the original high brake light.

What, in my opinion, made it illegal was that when the brake pedal was pressed it flashed red and blue alternatively. So sitting at traffic lights, with a foot on the brake, meant it showed a blue flashing light to anyone approaching.

The joke was it was fitted to a Matiz, a real cool chav car I must say.

Hi Davey - I take it you mean me?
Nationwide Car Contracts. nccsales.co.uk or nationwide-cars.co.uk. May I suggest you look at their T & C from the homepage and in particular No 7. I didn't before ordering and although it has caused no problems for me, some may find these conditions not to their liking. There are some threads about 'on-line dealers' on HJ if you search.

Good luck

I don't think I'd really get one of these because of the risk of getting into trouble but the concept of letting that BMW driver behind know what you think of him (or her) has a certain appeal.

"I'm sure these things don't let you use swear words, which completely negates the point of having one."

You just have to get it to flash up "Genesis VIII, 17".

When the offending driver gets home (s)he can look it up in the Bible or on Google and find it says "Go forth and multiply".

Any chance of some advice?

I've lived in Spain for 10 years, always managing to avoid the summer jams in England on my occasional return trips. However, this year the plan would be to go from Portsmouth to North Devon on the 22 July, exactly one day after the schools break up!! Am I likely to be stuck for hours and hours as everyone rushes off on holiday to the West Country/New Forest or will most people wait until August to go on holiday? Would it better to travel on the 21st or early on the 22nd?

As all of you I hate jams but as I live in a place where jams are an exception you can understand my desire to avoid one, especially with a 2 year-old in the back!!

By the way I hear rumours that Portsmouth is a nightmare for traffic at the moment and they want to put 20mph limits in all the streets?

Thanks

polo auto

I've had my polo 1.4CL auto (1999) for two years and no problems - regular servicing/oil changes etc. This morning the engine spluttered while starting, coughed and died, and the oil warning lamp and buzzer went off. I tried again - same thing. I got it onto the flat and checked the oil, which was fine. It then started ok and I drove it the 16 miles to work without the light coming on at all. Should I be worried or was it just objecting to starting on a grey damp Monday? Read more

Armitage is write the oil light and the buffer are coming on because the car tried to start ans failed thus the ignition is on when the oil pressure fails. I suspect your failing to start is a simple ignition problem perhaps a good clean of the HT cables, distributor and coil will sort it. Regards Peter

I have a 2005 ford mondeo TDCI, when driving at high speed the wheel shakes ever so slightly and when braking from high speed the wheel shakes a little more noticeably.

Now, is this due to dodgy disks or tracking out of alignment? Read more

L'escargot

It could be nothing more serious than the front wheels needing balancing. To be on the safe side I would have all four done.

I have a 1999 Peugeot 306 which has the usual steering wheel volume control/search stick. The radio is the standard for the vehicle.
The control stick isn't functioning at all, does anyone know if it is a complicated piece of work to repair the fault or if it's expensive? Would it be best to take to a Peugeot dealer rather than independent? If anyone has any experiences with this type of fault I'd appreciate your feedback.

Many Thanks. Read more

Have you checked the connection on the back of the radio?

The radio may have been removed for recoding and whoever may have forgotten to reconnect it.

Read very impressive reviews of these, but have no clue where I can buy them. The Koni UK website doesn't list them, but I know they exist. Google turned up some UK companies selling them but only for Volvo and Saab applications. This is a long shot but I was wondering if anyone knew of a supplier in the UK or on the continent.

Suppliers in the USA are backordered and even if they had them in stock, due to the weight, postage from the US and import duty etc would price them out of my budget. Read more

Interesting, I'm at JKM next week having FSDs fitted to my Passat - I'm looking for the overall ride improvement and less bounce and roll including wallowing at higher speeds on motorway undulations. Some time in the future I might consider the Eibach springs that Koni recommend with the FSDs and replacement bushes as you have done (mine are worn but still serviceable)

"Cameron goes slightly greener in luxury Lexus"

David Cameron yesterday confirmed that he opted for a large luxury car, rather than a less polluting model, when he decided to ditch his Government-provided vehicle for environmental reasons.

His admission came as he announced plans to commit the Conservatives to targets to slash emissions of greenhouse gases from traffic on British roads.

As leader of the opposition, Mr Cameron is entitled to a Government car. But he has decided to hand back his Vauxhall Omega and instead lease commercially a more environmentally-friendly Lexus GS 450h with a "hybrid" engine which gives off less carbon in exhaust. However, he turned down a Government-provided Toyota Prius, whose emissions, at 104g per kilometre, are significantly lower than the 186g given off by the Lexus.

Mr Cameron said he had opted for the larger car because the Prius was not big enough to carry all his entourage, meaning he would often have had to take two cars on visits.

"My current car that the Government gave me is 276g, so the car I am getting is going to be a huge decline from that," said Mr Cameron.

"PhilW, try to engage your brain before you start spouting statistics. I don't know whether your 97% figure is correct"

That's a very strange argument.

"The point is that those "natural" emissions are a closed system."
Doesn't matter whether it is closed or not - it matters though, where the CO2 is - ie is it locked up? Is it being released by your organisms or absorbed by your organisms - the balance between these will affect the amount in the atmosphere - and by far more than anything man can produce. (And of course you have totally omitted to mention the vast amounts of CO2 emitted by volcanic activity)- here's a quote to ponder- "Above or below average rises in CO2 levels in the atmosphere have been explained in the past by natural events".

Anyway, while engaging brain, and not quoting statistics perhaps you should research some of the eminent scientists who claim that CO2 increases do not CAUSE global warming but are a RESULT of global warming.
I'm no expert, I merely quoted figures from various sources (they range from 95% natural to 99% natural, so I chose the middle figure).
"don't try to use nonsensical numbers to pretend that we've not created a huge environmental problem for ourselves by burning oil." - they ain't nonsensical and it ain't just oil - ever heard of coal and wood? - look up how much coal China and India mine and burn.
"historically (100 millions of years ago) was much hotter than it was today," - how did that happen then? It certainly didn't have much to do with burning oil in my car.
"by reinjecting the CO2," so how do we do that into your "closed system"
"we've managed to cause a huge surge of over 30% in the level of CO2" - You sure about that - we've done it?? See the quote below
"It is back to the drawing board for carbon cycle models. Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration varies in a manner which has not been predicted successfully by existing models. There was significant variability before there could have been a human contribution. This variability appears to have followed temperature changes, rather than being responsible for them. Although there has been an increase during the period of industrial development, the increase has not been uniform. Thus, the period between 1935-45 showed no change. The period since 1972, when the increase has been linear despite an increase of over 45% in emissions, suggests that there are new carbon sinks being established in the ocean and in the terrestrial biosphere to absorb the increases. This behaviour plays havoc with previous predictions of global warming, but it is difficult to know how long the present apparently stable rate of increase will continue."

Oh, and so glad to see that you agree with my main point (and back to motoring)- "I agree that the choice of car of 1 or 2 politicians is utterly irrelevant"
As I said "it's a damn good excuse for non-driving Gordon Brown to extract an extra £40 a year from "gas-gussler" drivers in "road fund" tax, or petrol/diesel duty from all of us."
