I am not familiar with Toyotas, can anyone point me in the right direction, please?

The car is a 1991 Mk2 MR2. 2,0 16v. It has 87k on the clock and was last serviced 2k miles ago. I must confess that I haven't given it the once over yet to see how good the service was.It has started stalling when coming to a stop, but not every time. It always re-starts ok and will tickover ok occaisionally. This happens whether the engine is hot or cold. Sometimes the revs drop and rise and the engine can be "caught" before it stalls.
It's my daughter's car, I haven't driven it. The tickover sounds "lumpy" to me. I have had a quick look at it, and can't see any pipes/connectors adrift. I could not hear the throttle position switch activate, but have not checked it with a meter, yet.
She says that it performs ok and is doing about 35mpg.

Are there any known weak spots to check first?
Any guidelines would be most appreciated.
Thank you. Read more

Did the job on Saturday, also noticed that the cooling system overflow tank was "murky" so tried to remove it to clean it out. Gave up in the end(became faint from blood loss through grazed knuckles, cut fingers etc!). Cleaned it out in situ.
I did read that air in the cooling system can cause erratic idling, so next job is drain flush bleed cooling system.
Thanks to Aprilia from daughter, apparantly much improved drivability all round.

Hello there, I wonder if any one can help me. My husband has asked me what car I would like to replace my Range Rover, which is getting on a bit as it's due for its first MOT at the end of the year. I'd really like something bigger as it's a struggle getting both the children and the dog and the shopping in but I don't know if there is any thing bigger? I'll be using it every day for taking the kids to school and shopping but we use my husband's car at weekends. It has to be automatic and have air conditioning and a hook for my hand bag. Economy doesn't matter as I don't do many miles, but it has to be very strong as two people in cars have driven into the front of my Range Rover since I got it.
Does any one have any suggestions? Read more

I've noticed that as soon as a passenger (or heavy load) gets in it sounds like the front wheels start rubbing on the bodywork of the car but only when I turn the steering wheel a complete turn either left or right. The ball joints, shocks, steering, etc. were checked in November with no problems to report, and it passed its MOT a few weeks later - although I know things can go wrong at any time.

Tyres were replaced last October as the tread was pretty low, but the inner edges were worn more, so I assume this is not a new problem.

Not sure what to check first. Any suggestions? Read more

The cone, or dry setup as it is more commonly known if we are to be pedantic, was used on this car. it is basically the same as a macpherson strut except that it uses a rubber cones in place of the usual spring which is normally fitted in this set-up.
anyway now that is hopefully cleared up. i can tell you that if you lower the rear of the car so that it sits level when nothing in it. then when you put heavy things in the boot or on the back seats etc the rear of the car sits down lower and the rear wheels rub on the arches.

Hi,
Does anyone out there know an easy way of setting the toe-in?
I have done it as per the Haynes manual by measuring from the wheel rims. I spent a lot of time doing it in order to get it right, and I have the same number of threads on both sides and if my maths is correct the toe-in stands at -2.0mm Which is within the recommendations in the manual BUT,I am still getting a slight pull to the nearside and the inside edge of the tyre is wearing faster than normal. Could the problem be down to some other factor??
Any help deeply appreciated. Thanks Biggrin Read more

I had similar problem on my 306, due to out-of-shape tyre.
Try swapping left/right whells to see if it pulls the other
way.

i agree and give the casing a good physical check for lumps etc with regards tracking ive tracked many cars by measuring the inner rims front and rear and never had a problem.

CAR: 1998 ROVER 214

The heater matrix has been replaced & now it won't get hot. The vehicle has been raised whilst filling, and the heater was filled with coolant prior to fitting to try & prevent air locks.

Any hints? (PS, it is one of my customers who is doing the job &
I'm getting the blame because I supplied the part, any hints would be greatly appreciated!!) Read more

Thannks for the replies guys, like I said though, it's a garage(one of my customers), which is doing the job & they have ordered a complete heater box from Rover (220+vat!!), as they think the matrix I supplied is faulty (it has been flow tested & checked for leaks, all ok). It will be interesting to see how they get on & this resolves it.

I purchased a car in October from an online trader. I still aven't had the V5 and its not registered in my name according to Swansea.

Is this normal ?

i find that the dvla normally accept anything if told in truth, was it on this site that they said one signature on the v5 was acceptable for a keeper transfer?yet i have to ask for date of birth on all vehicle transfers.I personally have no hack with them they are always on the ball, for me its the postal system i find that lets the system down (very badly).

Read another report about how purchasers of these (in particular our MPs and screen stars!) are being brainwashed in to buying them on the back of their 'green' credentials. Most users say the MPG figure achieved is less than 40 and there are still questions about those batteries and disposing of them. The only advantages in owning one are quietness in town and no congestion charge.

VW have just introduced a revised 1.4 diesel Polo - the Bluemotion. It does mid 70s mpg and has a CO2 emissions level below that of a Prius.

A memeory that I consider my first memory of a car was going in my dads morris van. A very rare type now it had a morris oxford front and a sort of bloated Morris Minor rear (front like a Hindustan ambassador)
All i can remember was sitting in the middle of the large bench seat with my brother, and not being able to see over the dash, and what appeared to me a enormous steering wheel with a large crome horn opperating ring. This must of been about 1962 or 3 i'd have been 3 or 4
Then i can remember a Beford CA Utilabreak then one of 3 VW type 2's my dad had
Then in 1968 his bussness was doing well and he treated himself to a new car a Morris 1800. My mother insisted on it being black so was to special order. I can remember being picked up from school the 1st day we had it. Also remember having a crash in it on ice! That car went on localy for a few years as a Taxi the Reg No i will alwasys remember as FCC 600F Infact i saw the Reg on another car sometime in the early 90's
I can also remember about 4 Morris Minor vans he had for service duties
He slimed down that aspect of the bussness and bought a MK2 cortina estate for my uncle to use as a service vehicle. Too me as a young boy was a revalation compaired to the stuffy 1800 this was sexy & had street cred! Read more

Not sure which is the earliest memory:
Peering over my uncle's shoulder (wot seatbelts?) in a Ford Corsair (V4 2 litre?) and seeing the speedo hit 100.
or
Clambering out of my Dad's Triumph Herald after a Jag driver lost control and ended up parking on top of the Herald's bonnet, his bumper against our windscreen, as we sat at some traffic lights. Only injury was a cut to my Dad's forehead - a scar he bears to this day.
both some time in the mid Sixties.

My cystern has started playing up recently.I find the only way to flush is to operate the flush lever in a rapid pump action untill a pressure is built up, at which point the cystern will flush. I would be grateful for any help. Thanks Read more

Cheers for the replies so far. Espada, they are definitely buying the house and it is one street away from her mother's so certainly would be no problem with family looking in every week, if not more regularly!

Any brokers that you would recommend or even a starting point? House is in Scotland if that makes any difference, though I am sure it won't?
