No!

Sounds like he has either not sent the V5 to the DVLA or it got lost in the post. Nip down to the post office and explain the situation, they will give you the relevant form. Fill it in and send it off to the DVLA who will make enquiries with the previous owner and providing there is no problems they will send you the new V5 with you as registered keeper.

Whos name is it registered in and is it paid for ,there are a few scams going on .Double check and then treble check you do not want the man knocking on the door taking it away.It may be the people he bought it from will not release the V5 till he pays.

It was bought new - 100 miles on clock. I knew it had to be pre registered but not that I would have to wait n months for the V5.

I'm even the 1st name in the service book.

As per somebody elses comments below I have a private reg i want to put on the car - that couldn't be done when I bought it.

it seems that other people have had the same issues - I'll just have to keep chasing the firm for this info.

The form is probably available online.

He will need the V5 tear of slip,or some means to absolutely provebeyond doubt the car his is.If its still registered in somebody elses name then the DVLC will come back to him and nulify the transaction if it was so simple anybody could register anybodys car in there name.

Which has been happening a lot with stolen motorbikes according to MCN at the back end of last year.

I agree ,but it is the end punter who carrys the can and loses the vehicle when DVLC catch up with their paper work.

I'm ashamed to admit that I can beat that! I took delivery on 07.06.05. from an on-line broker who I have recommended in previous posts. I simply didn't notice I did not have the V5 until last week when it arrived, transfer dated 27.02.06. The vehicle was taxed, why would I need it? yes, I know. The vehicle has been registered to a car hire company at the same address as the broker. I have sent off the V5 stating I have been the reg keeper from 07.06.05. and have a delivery note to prove it. I have also insured it and borrowed the money to pay for it from that date. I await return of the V5 with interest. I had intended to keep the vehicle until it expired so at the moment it doesn't bother me too much.

Not having the V5 could be a problem if the Police asked for your documents to be presented. What happens if you cannot provide the V5?

I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.

Not having the V5 means that you can't (legally) take the car abroad SFAIK, unless you have written permission from the 'owner'.

In my experience a police 'producer' only calls for insurance and mot. When i showed them the V5 the officer behind the counter wasn't interested and said they didn't need it.
Of course I stand to be corrected by greater legal minds than mine.

Update. I know you have all been lying awake. The new V5 arrived yesterday, It records the 'car hire' company as registering the car as new on the 31.05.05 and myself as acquiring the vehicle on the 02.06.05. Their computer presumably misread my 07.06.05. as 02.06.05. No complaints from here, but it makes me wonder how many months the DVLA is prepared to accept a backdated transfer?

i find that the dvla normally accept anything if told in truth, was it on this site that they said one signature on the v5 was acceptable for a keeper transfer?yet i have to ask for date of birth on all vehicle transfers.I personally have no hack with them they are always on the ball, for me its the postal system i find that lets the system down (very badly).
